For some reason, this suggestion from Tesco's has pissed me off big time.

Am I being pathetic or are they blatant CFs?

YABU = It's a price hike, get over it
YANBU = They're CFs but hoping we're too stupid to notice

That is a branded product, isn't it? Why are you blaming Tesco not the brand?

ftw163532 · 21/10/2021 18:03

This is how food price rises normally go - they decrease the product size but keep the same price. It's nothing new.

RobertaFirmino · 21/10/2021 18:03

Well it's not a price hike as such is it - they're reducing the contents, charging the same price and as you say, hoping we're all to stupid to notice. I'm sure someone will be along soon to say 'It's 10g, get over it' but that's not the point. It's the way they are trying to pull the wool over our eyes in general.

Sparklfairy · 21/10/2021 18:03

It's sneaky, and been happening for years. Marketers believe we'd prefer this to the size staying the same but the price going up. I started noticing it 20 years ago when I first started buying my own food.

I'm not sure. If you're on a tight budget and simply don't have the money for a higher price, then you don't buy the product at all. At least this way those people still get some cheese, and the manufacturer gets your money.

Overall though I think it's manufacturers just gradually squeezing more profit out of us - I don't think costs go up at the same rate as product sizes go down.

ShinyMe · 21/10/2021 18:25

It's what brands do. But it's not Tesco's decision.

^^ This.

After they've taken it down to 125g for a while they'll go back to 150g, up the price and sell it as "New bigger tube, 20% more."

Hoardasurass · 21/10/2021 18:43

Have you never heard the term "shrinkflation"

bluebeck · 21/10/2021 18:44

A) YABU for buying such disgusting shite
B) YABU for blaming the price rise on Tesco instead of Primula.

DysmalRadius · 21/10/2021 18:47

It's hardly sneaky - they have specifically drawn your attention to it!

If they had just changed the original listing and put it into your favourites instead of the larger pack, that would be them hoping you're too stupid to notice. But they have told you that the old size is no longer available and alerted you to the smaller size. I'm not really sure what else they can do given that Primula have obviously had the last word on their own product.

ThatsWhatI · 21/10/2021 18:50

You're being a tad dramatic over some revolting cheese spread

ReviewingTheSituation · 21/10/2021 18:54

@ShinyMe - it absolutely is Tesco's decision. Shelf price is always set by the retailer.

Clearly there was a negotiation between Primula and Tesco over the price Tesco pay, but the decision about what to charge shoppers is the retailer's.

SummerHouse · 21/10/2021 18:54

I thought this thread might be a little more fun.

"I can see why you are cheesed off" etc.

Come on guys!

Longdistance · 21/10/2021 18:54

YABU for buying Primula ‘cheese’. I have more cheese in my sock than is in that tube.

gobbynorthernbird · 21/10/2021 18:56

I'd brie devastated

clockover · 21/10/2021 18:58

@ftw163532

Probably because it's Tesco who are selling it. They don't have to sell it for the same price as the bigger product sold for.

clockover · 21/10/2021 18:59

@ShinyMe

It's what brands do. But it's not Tesco's decision.

Of course it is. Nobody forced them to sell it for £1.50 Hmm

EdgeOfTheSky · 21/10/2021 19:00

YABU.

That is a very good substitution suggestion.

Usually for that product you would be offered a primrose scented candle, cheese shaped post it notes or a tube of toothpaste .

And yet the product they have suggested seems a close match.

thisplaceisweird · 21/10/2021 19:01

Yabu for eating primula

MinesAPintOfTea · 21/10/2021 19:05

Sleepy eyes read that as 10kg: I wondered why you had so much cheese to start with!

SummerHouse · 21/10/2021 19:05

@gobbynorthernbird

I'd brie devastated
Good Gobby!! That's what I'm talking about! Grin
SummerHouse · 21/10/2021 19:07

They should be told. It's rude to cut the cheese.Grin

ShinyMe · 21/10/2021 19:08

Should a retailer just keep absorbing price rises indefinitely? How do we know that primula hasn't upped their price to tesco by 20p but Tesco has only upped it by 10p? They can charge what they want. You can buy it or not. It's hardly an essential product.

Georgyporky · 21/10/2021 19:08

What cheddar gonna do about it ?

antsinyourpanta · 21/10/2021 19:10

This sort of thing really grates on me.

Is that ok @SummerHouse? Grin

CCC1 · 21/10/2021 19:10

I Camembert it when they do that. It really grates on me.
