To think Amnesty International now does more harm to women than good?

I've supported them for nearly 20 years although I've been noticing more & more people on here saying they've left.

Today I saw they were officially protesting at the Filia Conference in Portsmouth over the weekend:

hiyamaya.net/2021/10/18/amnesty-international-is-sexually-harassing-women-political-protest/

I've been putting off cancelling my direct debit to them as I think they do good work eg. campaigning for the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in Iran.

But I can't square that with Amnesty actively protesting against women meeting to discuss women's rights, poverty, violence against women around the world etc etc.

Should I cancel the direct debit? (£30 a month so not megabucks but it adds up). Anyone know of a better way to support women's rights around the world?

Forgot to say I got their Autumn catalogue through the post today and the cover is a man in a hoodie & big boots next to a woman with a bag that says "Fighting bad guys since 1961". It feels like it's got a lot more aggressive since the letter-writing campaign days.

oooh! Thanks Pallisers, haven't seen that before. I'll read it later, when I've done the cooking.

They’ve been at it for a while now. Deeply disappointing.

Campervan69 · 18/10/2021 17:29

I saw those awful abusive signs from the protest of FILiA at the weekend. Apparently the men outside chanting were drowning out the speeches of women from Afghanistan and other counties speaking about the oppression faced by women over there. Sounded very upsetting.

WhoNeedsaLammyInTheWorld · 18/10/2021 17:33

I cancelled ages ago. They haven't been a friend to women for years

Iflyaway · 18/10/2021 17:44

The world's gone mad! (Nothing new there then....).

They've all gone down the rabbit hole!! Shock.

Fucking depressing.....

AlfonsoTheDinosaur · 18/10/2021 17:47

AI have been involved in a serious bully scandal within the ranks for years now. I'd avoid them like Covid the plague.

Beamur · 18/10/2021 17:51

That's not a good look for Amnesty. My DH has been pondering cancelling his support, despite the good they do on certain topics over their misogyny. I've sent him a link.

FreshFreesias · 18/10/2021 18:05

When I last looked they were paying their CEO 500k a year.

Buzzinwithbez · 18/10/2021 18:06

This might be a better place to direct your money

Tal45 · 18/10/2021 18:10

A different approach but I support women abroad with microloans with Lend with care. I get some/most of the money back and then can reinvest it to help another lady.

Warsawa31 · 18/10/2021 18:30

@Tal45

That is a fantastic approach - the emancipation of women, everywhere it has been tried around the world has actually worked to reduce poverty.

So many people can be and want to be productive and self reliant - giving people the means to help themselves out of poverty is honestly the best form of charity.

Amnesty, oxfam et al seem to abuse the poor and enrich the CEO's despite also doing good work.

Pedalpushers · 18/10/2021 18:31

I love lendwithcare as well.

1Week · 18/10/2021 18:33

I've never heard of lend with care - that sounds great, thanks

Babdoc · 18/10/2021 18:37

Womankind are a charity that I support, OP. Campaigning for actual women’s rights around the world, for legal advice to help them fight fgm, male land grabs of their subsistence farms, custody of children, forced marriage etc. As far as I can see, they are happy to use the word “woman” in its correct meaning.

YearsSinceISawYou · 18/10/2021 18:38

Is that the correct salary for the CEO?

When did that happen?

I've been a member for a long time but if they're paying half a million pounds a year to the CEO, I'm going to consider bringing my membership to a halt.

minou123 · 18/10/2021 18:44

Sorry, can I clarify?

Did Amnesty International support the protest?

I saw the tweet from the organiser claiming AI supported them and I saw the banners had the AI candle with barbed wire.

But is there anything direct from AI staring they supported the protestors?

bigeegit · 18/10/2021 18:49

One point I've always been a little confused about, as pointed out in that link that "anyone with a cervix" has replaced women in health correspondence, but not "anyone with testicles" vs men. Surely "anyone with a cervix" refers to women who identify as women and women who now identify as men? So wouldnt men who are still intact but now identify as women have more of an issue with the use of the word men in health articles? Wouldnt they prefer that to be "anyone with testicles" since they dont identify as men anymore?

DismantledKing · 18/10/2021 18:51

Amnesty have become dreadful. Terrible organisation.

FatCatThinCat · 18/10/2021 18:56

Bloody hell this is awful. I hope it opens their eyes to the wickedness they are supporting.

Throckmorton · 18/10/2021 19:12

I canceled my AI membership years ago - they don't support women

CityMumma78 · 18/10/2021 19:16

You should cancel your donations and look to support a more worthwhile and less controversial charity!
I think this whole topic and the erosion of womenkind is starting to pick up momentum and females don’t want to attend by and lose our rights to safety and privacy. The silent majority are against this trans movement where individuals can self identify and be given an access all areas pass!

A few smoking guns;
To think Amnesty International now does more harm to women than good?

minou123 · 18/10/2021 19:39

Thank you secular111

But none of those state that AI supported this protest.

What I'm getting at is, I could create a banner with any charity logo and claim they support me, but that doesn't mean they have.
