To think Amnesty International now does more harm to women than good?

I've supported them for nearly 20 years although I've been noticing more & more people on here saying they've left.

Today I saw they were officially protesting at the Filia Conference in Portsmouth over the weekend:

hiyamaya.net/2021/10/18/amnesty-international-is-sexually-harassing-women-political-protest/

I've been putting off cancelling my direct debit to them as I think they do good work eg. campaigning for the release of Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in Iran.

But I can't square that with Amnesty actively protesting against women meeting to discuss women's rights, poverty, violence against women around the world etc etc.

Should I cancel the direct debit? (£30 a month so not megabucks but it adds up). Anyone know of a better way to support women's rights around the world?

I gave up on Amnesty a while back. They really have sold out. Most of the big charities are not worth supporting imo.

@Artichokeleaves

Quite. If it's a 'right' for someone, then someone else has a compulsion to provide it.

No. Being loved is not a right. Sex is not a right.

And the awful irony of shouting about love at that protest, in that place, with that evidence being given by women inside?

Values shot beyond repair.

Wouldn't it be nice for informed, enthusiastic, freely given consent to be a consideration?

Sorry, they don't care about that.

I suppose my high bar for confirmation is to hear/read it from AI themselves.

I think where we differ is I don't believe a tweet or a printed piece of paper from an unknown source.
Stephsplace (or whatever they are called) can say anything on twitter, but I don't trust its true.

If anyone has a statement from AI stating their official support, then I'm with you.

Have you heard that Amnesty Ireland signed an open letter calling on "media and politicians to deny representation" to "those who defend biology".

So much for freedom of belief and expression.

Though I totally see your point - it is best not to assume and not take the word of someone who may not be entirely truthful in all things.

I'm waiting to hear back, minou. I emailed them last week to enquire. No response as yet.

Amnesty International signed this letter:

Some excerpts: 'Sex and gender are both spectrums, and the full beauty of that spectrum must be supported

We call on media, and politicians to no longer provide legitimate representation for those that share bigoted beliefs, that are aligned with far right ideologies and seek nothing but harm and division. These fringe internet accounts stand against affirmative medical care of transgender people, and they stand against the right to self-identification of transgender people in this country.

Those are just some of the most egregious highlights

Clymene · 19/10/2021 17:58

Oh and they're big believers in men's rights to buy and sell women's bodies.

Thanks ArabellaScott.
