Can everyone stop asking for handholds!

That is all.

The phrase or the request for support?

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 18/10/2021 12:58

I only see this when someone is going through a genuinely traumatic experience. You don't have to read the threads if you don't like the concept.

MrsRobbieHart · 18/10/2021 12:59

The phrase! No problem with requests for support.

It’s in the thread titles

Why does it bother you?

MrsRobbieHart · 18/10/2021 13:03

No idea. It just does.

OP posts:

How would you prefer people phrase it?

MrsRobbieHart · 18/10/2021 13:45

Not sure, I’ll have a think on it and get back to you.

😁 not that anyone will change it, I'm just curious.

Bad timing really though, considering a devastated woman is in active convos asking for a handhold as her life has turned upside down

MrsRobbieHart · 18/10/2021 13:55

Oh Sad Wink

Not directed at anyone in particular. The phrase just rankles.

Right, so, what you'd prefer is that, when someone is in the the throes of a traumatic life event, and would like to seek support from their chosen online community, is if they could find some other form of wording, instead of reaching for the shorthand that all other users will recognise? Whilst they're dealing with god knows what in real life.

You know when a thought runs through your head? Sometimes, for kindness, it's better to leave it in there.

FluffyBooBoo · 18/10/2021 14:00

YABU for using a rubbish, completely uninformative title to complain about other people's titles that at least offer a clue as to what they are about.

MrsRobbieHart · 18/10/2021 14:01

Well no, they don’t have to replace it with anything surely? “My bedroom fell off the house” is sufficient to accurately portray that they need support, no?

Do you mean…. #bekind?

Lots of things irritate people though. We just get on with it.

I feel sorry for people who have meltdowns over bad grammar or phrases they don't like. It must be a nightmare.

I think we should invest our energy getting upset by the shitty things people do, rather than someone's use of words. Words really are a minor thing to fret about.

MrsRobbieHart · 18/10/2021 14:09

Yes, that must be really hard for them. Having a meltdown is a very extreme reaction to bad grammar or a phrase. I would imagine if someone was actually having a meltdown for that reason, they must have other stuff going on for them to react so badly. As opposed to just being irritated by it…

Very entitled of you to think people should stop using a word on a public forum simply because it annoys you, especially one used when people are at their lowest.

Thelgeden · 18/10/2021 14:11

Agree with hubby/hubs. Boak!!

To be fair, It’s also used for nonsense threads. I think that’s where the irritation comes from tbh.

It's one of those annoying 'only seen on MN' phrases, which no one says in real life or on other online forums.

Pretty sure hand holding with strangers is just not ok any more due to covid anyway to be fair.
