Discussion in our house (in London where it is currently a somewhat chilly 13 degrees).

With me, DP and DS all working at home

YABU - you shouldnt be thinking about the heating, put another jumper on!
YANBU - life's too short to be cold!

Unless you're putting it off for financial reasons, put it on. Feeling cold isn't productive, and is no good for the house either. Mines been on all year, lowest setting of 19°c, currently set to 23.

ShirleyPhallus · 12/10/2021 11:02

Ours went on yesterday when it fell to 15 degrees in the house. We have a toddler who woke up in the night as she was cold so that’s why it went on.

Wondering how big our gas bill will be though and that this is basically the start of 5 months of heating now.

23 is totally unnecessary.
Shoxfordian · 12/10/2021 11:04

Ours was on in august so yanbu

Also at 23 - how is that unnecessary? It’s cold

LettertoHermoine · 12/10/2021 11:08

Life is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too short to be cold.

Provided, of course, there are financial difficulties.

TurnUpTurnip · 12/10/2021 11:08

Mines been on for months (London too)

Shmithecat2 · 12/10/2021 11:09

@Palavah

Unnecessary? Please explain?

TrickyD · 12/10/2021 11:10

I am spending a happy morning insulating various windows with bubble wrap. Apparently it is very effective and certainly easy to do. You just need wrap with big bubbles and water which you spray on the window, then the wrap sticks to it.

It is a very satisfying job. I am only doing windows with no view, some of which already have opaque glass.

Our current fuel bill is £328 a month, so any saving is very welcome.

ShirleyPhallus · 12/10/2021 11:25

I’d boil alive at 23 degrees

About 19/20 degrees is perfect temp for me

DappledThings · 12/10/2021 11:30

Can't turn mine on till tomorrow when the plumber comes to fit a new radiator. The old one was removed by a carpenter and not capped properly so we would flood if went on now. I'm no fan of an overheated house but it is very chilly inside today. I'm secretly a bit pleased to have made it to mid-October without it but it would definitely have come on in the last fortnight if we could have done.

DuvetDayIsEveryDay · 12/10/2021 11:33

I'm also in London and it's warm today !

Wakemeuuuup · 12/10/2021 11:35

We're in London, ours went on today we're cold

ProudMaiasaura · 12/10/2021 11:38

It's chilly, but not cold. A pair of warm socks and a jumper has me fine WFH today.

If you're cold (so jumper and socks not cutting it) and you can afford it then turn on your heating. My mother feels the cold terribly, she'd be miserable without the heating on so whilst I'm fine without it I don't think people should be cold and unhappy unnecessarily because life is shit enough without self flagellation

MrzClaus · 12/10/2021 11:39

Heating has been on since the start of October here!

Our thermostat says 24• but I'm not sure it's been calibrated correctly as it's definitely not tropical in here 😂

As PP said, if you can afford it - put it on! I WFH better when warm, otherwise all I do is think how cold I am!

ButterflyAway · 12/10/2021 11:39

“Yet”?? I’ve had it on for the last month Grin

TinyTear · 12/10/2021 12:02

you put it on when it's cold, not because of a fucking calendar!

don't be like my MIL who had the heating off as it was end of May and I had to sleep with socks, two jumpers and a fleece

Horst · 12/10/2021 12:05

Mine comes on at 17/18. Apparently we haven’t dropped below 21 yet I don’t believe that though.

IamMaz · 12/10/2021 12:10

Ours is never off! Just clicks in if it gets cold.

PineappleWilson · 12/10/2021 12:16

We have ours at 16.5 degrees. It's come on one morning so far, when it dropped to 15.5 degrees overnight.

MegaClutterSlut · 12/10/2021 12:30

Turned mine on for the first time last night as it was bloody freezing in the S.E

edwinbear · 12/10/2021 12:34

Also in London, but I'm absolutely fine wrapped up in my heated throw, which is much cheaper to have on all day instead of the heating!

ineedaholidayandwine · 12/10/2021 12:38

Mine came on briefly in Sept! (North Yorks) had a few random warm days so it's been all over the place.
Low temps look set to stay so it's on now

EdgeOfTheSky · 12/10/2021 12:47

I’m holding out because I don’t want to support Russia holding us Gas Hostage, and for environmental reasons. But I admit it is warmer outside than inside my house right now.

AFuturisticalSound · 12/10/2021 12:47

What do you mean by "yet"? Budget considerations aside isn't it the normal thing to do to put the heating on when you are cold rather than by consulting the calendar?

What's the obsession on here with taking a survey of other users before deciding on a routine matter Grin

No one actually sits in the cold because other posters haven't got their heating on do they? That would be crazy

SturminsterNewton · 12/10/2021 12:55

It's quite warm in my part of the country still so I don't need it on yet. I have though bought an electric throw should it get a bit cooler when I'm WFH.
