To turn the central heating on yet?

Discussion in our house (in London where it is currently a somewhat chilly 13 degrees).

With me, DP and DS all working at home

YABU - you shouldnt be thinking about the heating, put another jumper on!
YANBU - life's too short to be cold!

Does it not depend on how sensitive you are to the cold, your finances and also how well insulated your house is.
I am very lucky here that 30 minutes here and there takes the cold out of the house at this time of year. We haven’t had it on much yet this autumn. The heating seems to really aggravate DS eczema so sometimes I prefer sticking on an extra jumper.

Coogee · 12/10/2021 13:07

We relit the boiler at the beginning of the month but it has only fired up a couple of times since then. The thermostat is set to 18.

wobblywinelover · 12/10/2021 13:08

Makes me laugh when we get this fuss every year about putting the heating on. I can imagine people there with a big red pull down switch on their walls announcing 'I HEREBY DECLARE THIS HEATING NOW ON!!'.

Just put it on if you're cold. Some days mine is on, some days it isn't. The thermostat makes the decision for me

We have our thermostat behind one of those fancy little curtains and on a given day of that year, we host a little ceremony with champagne and tiny canapés and then pull the curtain open to reveal the thermostat
FinallyHere · 12/10/2021 13:13

DH has limited mobility, being cold tends to lead to tummy upsets but he honestly can't seem to notice the temperature.

Our heating is on a thermostat around 22C all year round. We have thermo radiator valves, the radiators in 'my' office always off.

It’s a bit like that in our house. The boiler can be a sod to relight. When he manages it my husband comes back and triumphantly proclaims his success.

ChorizoJacketPotato · 12/10/2021 13:20

Never understood people there wait until a certain date. Surely it depends on the weather, not the calendar!

Notcontent · 12/10/2021 13:22

I started putting mine on a few days ago. I know people say “just put on more layers” but that doesn’t work that well when you are sitting still working or studying. I also find that cold air makes me cough.

For me, if I am moving around then 19/20 degrees is fine. 18 is good in bedroom overnight. 21 degrees if I am sitting still and working.

bakingdemon · 12/10/2021 13:23

Holding off putting it on for as long as possible. Jumpers for all of us for as long as possible. And even when it's on we'll set the thermostat to 18/19. 23 is ridiculously warm and such a waste of energy. In autumn/winter you shouldn't expect to wear a t shirt at home - we should layer up.

HarrietsChariot · 12/10/2021 13:24

YABU, the rule is heating can only go on once the clocks go back (and is turned off when they go forward again). It's unnecessary to have the heating on during "summer time".

plinkplinkfizzer · 12/10/2021 13:40

My house is not that cold so have not put it on as yet . But whenever I feel a little chilled, I always imagine myself with a fist full of tenners and the energy company trying to prise it from my hands , then I wander off to get a cardi .😁

seaandsandcastles · 12/10/2021 13:41

Turn it on. No use in being cold. Our house is always 22.

seaandsandcastles · 12/10/2021 13:42

@bakingdemon Not in our house. If you can’t comfortably wear a T-shirt at any time of year, it’s too cold.

Excited101 · 12/10/2021 13:45

I’ll be trying not to use mine this year if it’s going to be really pricey. Iv3 had a hot water bottle for the past 2 nights, can double up my duvet too. I already have wool blankets on my bed and sofa so that will help.

teenmumandsowhat · 12/10/2021 13:54

I haven’t put mine on yet. I did reach the point last night where i used two duvets. I’m hoping to get as far through October as I can before i put it on. Mostly because of the cost tbh.
Growing up my parents rarely had the thermostat above 18.
But that’s probably because of my mum’s upbringing. Her family was the poorest in their village.

ScarlettSunset · 12/10/2021 13:56

I put mine on last week. Was very pleased with myself to have made it all the way to October before putting it on though as it's usually some time in September.
I'm also challenging myself to keep it fairly low (for me anyway) as I'm trying to see if I can save a bit on heating (though I've almost certainly spent more than I'd save on jumpers and thermals but hopefully they'll last more than one winter).
Mine is set to between 18 and 20.5 at various times during the day. Usually I'd have it at least 22 and sometimes I'm barely comfortable at that, but I'm hoping to manage with it at that. My willpower may give out at some point though!

Christ, no wonder the ice caps are melting.
Blossomtoes · 12/10/2021 16:59

@EdgeOfTheSky

I’m holding out because I don’t want to support Russia holding us Gas Hostage, and for environmental reasons. But I admit it is warmer outside than inside my house right now.
Put it on, love. The rest of us are and you being cold won’t make a ha’pporth of difference.
sunshinesupermum · 12/10/2021 17:12

No, and I'm in London too. Just put on a cardigan but we aren't cold. DP feels the cold and hasn't asked for the heating to be turned on yet. DD is staying over tomorrow night and have already bought her an extra blanket for her bed and will probably turn the heating on then. We keep the thermostat at 20C and that's plenty warm enough during the winter months.

Those people who insist on heating at 23 C and wearing teeshirts are selfish. We need to conserve energy not use it with abandon. Toughen up and think of people who cannot afford to heat their homes at all.

galacticpixels · 12/10/2021 17:13

We haven't put ours on yet because we're fine once we get a hot water bottle and use a fleece blanket when sitting around so don't see the point in paying for heating. When that isn't enough, the heat will go on as needed. Neither of us really like being particularly warm - we just like to be Not Cold.

TAKESNOSHITSHIRLEY · 12/10/2021 17:57

good grief all you moaning about 23 degrees, that standard cold temperature for this house

i have a big 3 bedroom, very well insulated

it gets put on at 32 degrees here for a few hours every time. Then the radiators slowly cool down till i put i back on again at 32.

im rural south wales the only street on top of a very high mountain so nothing around us by mountains. it gets dark here by 3.30-4pm in the mist of winter so i use a lot of electric and gas.

for example its 17.44 here more or less dark and its 11 degrees.it his 4 last night

people who dont know this area always tell me im exaggerating my surroundings but when your surrounded by welsh valleys mountains on all sides it gets cold, foggy and light or dark very early depending on the season.

l literally live in the old welsh valleys you see in old films

rainbowunicorn · 12/10/2021 18:15

Why on earth would you not just put the heating on if you are cold. This competitive misery that we see every year with people holding out until a particular date is utterly ridiculous.
If you are cold and you can afford to put the heating on just bloody do it. Why does everyone need to have every little thing validated by strangers on the internet these days?

Wazzzzzzzup · 12/10/2021 18:25

Every autumn I am reminded of the fact my husband is a temperature wimp😁
I like cold a lot. Helps me think.

Even we turned heating on for couple of days few weeks ago! And my cut off is normally mid October/ towards the end.

Palavah · 12/10/2021 18:26

Quite old, then?

0palescent · 12/10/2021 18:31

I love these threads Grin You go between the people who won't turn on heating until their toes are blue, and people who have it on at 30 so they can walk about in underwear.

Ours is on. It goes on for a couple of hours in the morning, again around lunchtime, and then it'll come on again in the evening if need be. If we were all out then of course we wouldn't need it at lunchtime, but homeworking 🤷‍♀️

Generally set to 19ish. Sometimes with a wee boost. We've a house that retains heat fairly well.
