AIBU to wonder why hazelnut ice cream is so hard to find?

I love ice cream, but the god tier in my opinion is hazelnut. I've had it in France, Spain, Italy and at an Italian gelateria in London but it is virtually impossible to buy in the UK. Mint choc chip is complete pigswill in comparison but the bloody stuff is available everywhere? AIBU?

Grom Gelato! In Waitrose - it's divine.

Talipesmum · 11/10/2021 11:11

Definitely Grom - it’s the best. If you love hazelnut icecream (which you are completely correct to do cos it’s the best) you may also like their pistachio icecream - the grom one is incredible.
Waitrose also have a chocolate and hazelnut own brand one which is great but I do prefer to be able to have separate if I want.

Talipesmum · 11/10/2021 11:13

Just googled - looks like Oatly sell a hazelnut icecream too but don’t know where.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 11/10/2021 11:18

Squirrels.
It's the squirrels.
They eat it all up early in the morning before everyone else gets up.

Ooh, I didn't know that. Might be a recent thing as I looked a few months back in our local Waitrose but nothing. Let's face it, it's going to be Waitrose if it's anywhere. Will definitely look for it. Pistachio ice cream is lovely too so might try that as well.

MN delivers, thanks everyone!

Hazelnut is so good! But I have to speak in defence of mint choc chip, it's hard to get decent quality versions of it but when you do they're great.

I really want some ice cream now, might have to make a trip to Waitrose specially.

LazyMareofEastown · 11/10/2021 11:29

Buy a bottle of Frangelico and serve over really good vanilla ice cream. Boozy hazelnut heaven 😍.

(Add espresso for the full affogato).

thereisonlyoneofme · 11/10/2021 11:33

Our Co-op does it.

WoodchipNightmares · 11/10/2021 11:33

Ice cream manufacturers have a tendency to be regional due to the challenges of frozen distribution. So, you might have to look locally.

However, Morelli's, Hackney Gelato, Tagg Lane, Red Boat and House of Gelato all won Great Taste Awards for their hazelnut ice cream / gelato this year, so that's not a bad place to start. More producers won last year too.

@Talipesmum thank you for info on pistachio ice cream. I'm pregnant and really want it but can't find it in any shops, to Waitrose it is

M&S do pistachio ice cream too!

LubaLuca · 11/10/2021 11:38

I love hazelnut ice cream too, so I'm very grateful for the Waitrose tip. Thank you!

Geamhradh · 11/10/2021 11:52

Don't Carte d'Or do it? Nocciola? That's what their hazelnut is called here in Italy.
I bloody love Mint Choc Chip.
And find anything pistachio flavoured except for pistachios themselves tasteless. (except for Delia's pistachio and cheese biscuits)
Am philistine.

Mermaidwaves · 11/10/2021 11:57

I once had an amazing rose flavoured ice cream, does anyone know if you can buy it as I've never seen it anywhere!

happysunr1se · 11/10/2021 11:59

The carte dor one was really good, i used it buy a tub a week, but can't find it anymore.

All the tub ice-creams are just variations of caramel, vanilla, toffee and chocolate, so boring, but I guess that's what the majority want.

Also marks and spencer regular strawberry ice cream is rubbish. Taste of very weak strawberry syrup. I thought as it was m&s it might be better than walls...no.

I know. Salted caramel, cookie dough, vanilla, strawberry etc. The usual offer but nothing else. I remember seeing a carte dor one ages ago but no luck.

With regard to the rose ice cream above, sounds interesting. When I was at university, the chef at our college made a pepper ice cream and it was gorgeous. Two things that shouldbt go together but they did, fabulously!

I used to buy it in Lidl, I think it was their own brand. It was rather yummy!

Cocomarine · 11/10/2021 12:11

My local vendor had it this summer and bloody hell it was good! So I can’t help, but I am here for the hazelnut ice cream chat.

Now… can someone explain to me why we have had pistachio ice cream for years but not hazelnut?

You could get it 30 years ago, at least. At the same time, hazelnut yoghurt was a really common flavour. So it can’t be about hazelnuts not being a thing in that UK in the 70s/80s.

I’ve often wondered (seriously!) how we came to have such an exotic flavour in pistachio.

Cocomarine · 11/10/2021 12:12

I was in Wales this summer and everyone was doing Turkish Delight ice cream. Not quite the subtlety of just Rose - but I can’t fault the added bonus of chocolate pieces!

Wbeezer · 11/10/2021 12:19

My local Scottish/Italian cafe has it as a guest flavour sometimes, i agree it is lovely as is coffee flavour, another occasional treat that should be more widely available but unfortunately the average ice cream customer seems to have more juvenile taste (ti be fair a lot of them are children!). I can't see the appeal of bubble gum flavour or irn bru flavour, yuck!

sweatpantsofdefeat · 11/10/2021 12:20

Hazelnut ice cream is the very best! Years ago Loseley did a hazelnut one with tiny bits of nut and meringue in it that was the dream.

Agree it's really hard to find now. Most of the ones listed by other posters are hazelnut/chocolate combos and then the chocolate flavour just dominates. Or vegan hazelnut which is not the same.

The Creams chain of desert parlours used to do an excellent hazelnut gelato but even they have replaced it with a Kinder one which isn't the same.

LubaLuca · 11/10/2021 12:25

I'm not a fan of all the caramel, chocolate, cookie etc either. It seems daft to say it's too sweet, but it is - it lacks any kind of interest because it's too much like confectionery. Although one of the nicest ice creams I've had was Pontefract cake, which is obviously confectionery!

PattiPritell · 11/10/2021 12:30

These do a lovely Hazelnut Crunch flavour.
www.drummuirfarm.co.uk/
It's near Dumfries.

Hoppinggreen · 11/10/2021 12:33

Because nuts in sweet things is very wrong, likewise fruit in savoury things

Gladioli23 · 11/10/2021 12:41

I have switched to Grom ice-cream. It's very expensive but it's a lot cheaper than a trip to Italy...

I don't understand why it's so difficult to find in this country either. :(
