AIBU to wonder why hazelnut ice cream is so hard to find?

I love ice cream, but the god tier in my opinion is hazelnut. I've had it in France, Spain, Italy and at an Italian gelateria in London but it is virtually impossible to buy in the UK. Mint choc chip is complete pigswill in comparison but the bloody stuff is available everywhere? AIBU?

@Mermaidwaves not rose as such but worth a try (although I found it not quite right, bit too sweet or something, not sure).

talking of flavours sounds awful but years ago I had brown bread ice cream at a church fete and it was delicious. wish they made that flavour. BTW what is the difference between ice cream and gelato, please?

Geamhradh · 11/10/2021 12:53

@Gladioli23

I have switched to Grom ice-cream. It's very expensive but it's a lot cheaper than a trip to Italy...

I don't understand why it's so difficult to find in this country either. :(

We don't get that much of it here either. My local supermarket has a tiny separate fridge with some little pots of Grom at €7 a pop. Can you get Venchi over there? That's the best IMO. Mind you, Haagen Dazs takes some beating for me. (don't tell the natives) Grin

It's coconut ice cream that I can never find! It's delicious. Lidl had some once ages ago but not since then.

happysunr1se · 11/10/2021 13:22

Ice cream is mostly made from cream, gelato is mostly made from milk.

happysunr1se · 11/10/2021 13:24

Actually I encountered some delicious icecream at a national trust place a few weeks ago. I think the brand was Sussex Ice-cream. It was a marmalade icecream, seriously the creamiest icecream I've ever had, had an almost marshmallow, plumpy texture.

@LazyMareofEastown

Buy a bottle of Frangelico and serve over really good vanilla ice cream. Boozy hazelnut heaven 😍.

(Add espresso for the full affogato).

You just gave me my new hobby.
MancMum2000 · 11/10/2021 13:35

Best flavour ever OP! I used to make my own but now I live within walking distance of a gelato shop, it’s dangerous.

My grandma used to make this - it was amazing. The breadcrumbs were toasted with sugar so it had quite a nutty caramelly flavour, but more interesting. Loved it.

Waitrose coconut and Lime icecream is good.
Ozanj · 11/10/2021 13:38

Cashew icecream is the best

Talipesmum · 11/10/2021 13:41
@Talipesmum thank you for info on pistachio ice cream. I'm pregnant and really want it but can't find it in any shops, to Waitrose it is
Just a warning that they don’t always have it in - I buy it whenever I see it.

If you are going through a pistachio phase (very understandable!) may I recommend pistachio creme, basically pistacho Nutella spread. I buy it from Amazon if i can’t get it in a local deli. The pisti brand has a particularly high pistachio percentage and is vg. Spread on toast, stir into yoghurt, spoon over ice cream, mix into porridge (it goes green!), crumpets, croissants, neat with a spoon…

heldinadream · 11/10/2021 13:48

Love of nutty type icecreams - Waitrose (again!) also sell a tahini icecream, which I liked. Wasn't top notch but made a nice change. Needed more flavour IMHO.

DidgeDoolittle · 11/10/2021 13:50

In France you can get the most divine pear ice cream. Like a magnum but with pear ice cream and dark chocolate. Ive not seen anything like it here.

CottonSock · 11/10/2021 13:51

I'm permanently searching for brown-bread ice cream if anyone knows. Better than it sounds.

TuftyMarmoset · 11/10/2021 14:05

I might have asked for an ice cream maker for Christmas so that I can make my own flavours Grin

@Cocomarine Sainsburys sell hazelnut yogurt

EdgeOfTheSky · 11/10/2021 14:11

If you have a local Polish supermarket see if they sell this brand, which is great quality and features a hazelnut tub grycan.pl/en/oferta/ice-cream/in-boxes/

EdgeOfTheSky · 11/10/2021 14:14

The Polish Grycan brand also do walnut, and pistachio.

joe delucci coconut ice cream (gelato) is officially the best coconut ice cream ever!

i have undertaken significant research to determine this fact so say this with complete confidence

they also do a hazelnut... and a pistachio...

Aldi have some in at the moment! Tesco also stocked it when I was online shopping from them last year. Co-op used to do a lush coconut and chocolate (I think?) one, but discontinued it.

I have been searching for bounty choc ices or ice cream tubs, but they seem to have totally vanished everywhere.

Cupcakegirl13 · 11/10/2021 14:40

You can defo get it in Lidl.

PhloxOfSheep · 11/10/2021 14:54

Ooh these recommendations are exciting. I love hazelnut ice cream. Might go to Waitrose tomorrow now.

KrakowDawn · 11/10/2021 15:05

I believe hazelnut yoghurt disappeared for so long because of the botulism outbreak in the 80s (1986?). Hazelnut yoghurt was at the centre of it, so they were all pulled from the shelves, and presumably took a long time for the market to recover.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 11/10/2021 15:07

Love the frangelico idea!

Mint choc chip is fine - not one of the evil flavours like raspberry riple

Also love pistachio, but the best flavours are coffee or a really good vanilla

GeidiPrimes · 11/10/2021 15:09

I can recommend Grom too! Fab texture.

I'd forgotten about frangelico over ice cream, bloody delicious
