What would you do if you won? Would you go public or would you remain anonymous? How would you tell people or would just keep it a secret? How would you stop your lives from being ruined from it?

OP posts:
Summersun2020 · 08/10/2021 14:25

I would remain anonymous. I’d help family and friends out financially so it would be obvious that I would come into money, but I wouldn’t disclose how much. I’d leave my job but maintain my registration and travel abroad doing charity work in relation to it.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/10/2021 14:27

I don't how it can be kept secret unless you never spend any of it on yourself. Even small things like a new car, or private school or moving house indicates your financial status has changed...

JuneOsborne · 08/10/2021 14:28

Anonymous and disappear completely. The minute you start helping out friends, they know you've won big. And the cats out of the bag then.

Bahamas first stop while, as a family, we do side what was next.

Charity wise, air ambulance and a children's charity (in light of little Arthur, whose father and step mother are in court this week, on trial for his murder). Narcolepsy UK and I'd start a new charity for suffers of medullary thyroid cancer. Completely outing, but hey, now you know if I disappear, that I won the big bucks

czycoup · 08/10/2021 14:32

Be anonymous.

Give 1m each to close family.
£1m split over a few charities.
Buy a house.
Quit my job.
Get a personal trainer, shopper and decorator.
Put the money somewhere that gives me an income each month.
Spend a year living at leisure while I work out what I want to do with the rest of my life.

czycoup · 08/10/2021 14:34

Actually just the £1m to charities seems a bit tight if I won £172m

Gettingthereslowly2020 · 08/10/2021 14:35

I'd remain anonymous. I'd donate most of it to different charities as anonymously as I could.

I'd buy myself a big mansion and a snazzy car. Friends would guess I'd come into some money if I've bought a million pound property but I'd say I'd won a lot less than I did and I'd say I've spent it nearly all on the house.

I'd send my child to private school and go on holidays multiple times a year. I'd work part time in something I enjoy that helps other people. I'd continue to make regular donations to charities and maybe set up my own.

Costumeidea · 08/10/2021 14:39

The usual stuff. New house, car, quit job. However, I would not send my child to a private school!

TeeBee · 08/10/2021 14:39

Remain anonymous but but a massive estate to house me and the family members I actually like. I wouldn't tell any of the others.
Then I'd spend a lot of it buying massive pieces of land/woodland to prevent anyone building on it.

Gettingthereslowly2020 · 08/10/2021 14:39

And yes, I'd get a housekeeper and cleaning staff. I'd have a yoga teacher pop round a few days a week and become some kind of yogi.

Youdoyoutoday · 08/10/2021 14:43

Would definitely stay anonymous!
Would give loads of it to charity, probably the 100 million and keep the 72, trust funds for the kids, travel the world, get my boobs done, get a personal trainer and a chef and have more holidays than Colleen Rooney Grin

MyPatronusIsAPenguin · 08/10/2021 14:44

I would want to remain anonymous even from family. I have thought about this a bit too much Grin. I would engage a solicitor to send cheques to my immediate family for the same amount including us. Then we could join in trying to work out who the mysterious benefactor is. Plus we wouldn't have to give any to DHs family who we are LC with but would soon come out of the woodwork!

Youdoyoutoday · 08/10/2021 14:44

Oh yes and a cleaner!!

Mooloolabababy · 08/10/2021 14:47

I would tell as few people as possible, buy all my friends and family houses, pay off mortgages etc. Give lots to charity (predominately young persons mental health) maybe even set up some kind of mental health support group/charity to actually provide something that's really necessary in my local town (as it is everywhere!!). Give a big lump sum to the schools that my children attend as they are so cash strapped (anonymous of course). But nice cars (not super outing nice, just new and economical) and have a bloody well earned nice holiday in the sun!

AmberLynn1536 · 08/10/2021 14:52

Initially I would gather my family at a restaurant that I had hired for the evening under the guise of a celebration of some kind and there would be a sealed envelope at each place, in that envelope would be a cheque for at least a couple of million pounds each, I would tell them I won the lottery but would not tell them it was the mega huge win, otherwise even that amount could breed resentment. I would fund a couple of my local animal charities and would set up some sanctuary’s of my own. I would buy a dream house in the Cotswolds and a holiday home on the coast plus a ski chalet in the alps just for Christmas!

SingingSands · 08/10/2021 14:53

Well I spotted this thread and thought I'd put a ticket on for tonight because you've got to be in it to win it!

Whilst on the app I thought I'd play an instant win game. Won a pound! Put it back into another instant game and won £20! I've withdrawn that into my bank.

I don't play the lottery very often, but that's really cheered my up today Grin

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 08/10/2021 14:54

Everyone says they’d remain anonymous - so how come so many people go public ? I presume there must be a reason.

coolhwip · 08/10/2021 14:55

Urgh not this again.

AlCalavicci · 08/10/2021 14:56

Regardless of how much i won if it's over a about 5 million I have always though I would ,
Split a quarter between close family and friends .
Split the remainder into 3 ,
One part to have fun with , holidays , learn to drive , car , new tec, charities etc
One part for a new home
The last part to go into a savings account that is locked for around 5 /8 years.

dworky · 08/10/2021 14:57

Definitely anonymous.
Give large amounts to friends & family.
Donate at least half to many charities, home & abroad.
Possibly set up a charity foundation.
Have an initial spending spree, the remainder to keep myself very comfortable for life.
Would not be bothered with investments.

CornishGem1975 · 08/10/2021 14:57

I was daydreaming earlier about what I would do if I won. I'd try not to tell too many people but then it would be pretty hard to blag when I was living in my mansion, swanning around in my Lambo.

I'd make sure our kids were set up for life with a reasonable amount, but not so much that they had a completely easy ride. Not sure about giving to friends and family, it would be on a case by case basis. A lot of friends and family have let me down in the past few years so...but I'd probably help my ex out.

I don't think I would necessarily give to charity but I think I would set up my own charity which would also give me something to focus on. Probably in the area of maternal health and perinatal mental health.

I'd go on a crap load of holidays, invest in property and just enjoy being able to buy what I wanted. I'd probably have a tummy tuck too 🤣

Frymetothemoon · 08/10/2021 15:00

New car, house, long holiday

Make everyone in the family financially comfortable

Help out a few people who have had a tough time in life

Pick a whole bunch of charities to support

WhyOhWhyOhWhyyyy · 08/10/2021 15:00

Definitely remain anonymous.
Give some (£5m each maybe) to immediate family straight away (parents and siblings)
Sod off to the Maldives whilst we decide what to do with the rest of it

meow1989 · 08/10/2021 15:01

It's almost too much money! I'd pay off my mortgage and pay a decorator and gardener. Probably buy a mansion but that makes me a bit sad as we've just bought our achievable dream house!
I'd pay off my sisters mortgage and buy us all plus dparents and dpil new cars.

I'd quit my job and start some expensive hobbies. I'd buy an apartment in Budapest and probably somewhere on the UK coast.

I'd give some to family and some to charities.

God knows what I'd do with the remaining 100 million or so!!

Largethighsbadeyes · 08/10/2021 15:01

I would tell my family.
Other people I'd say I'd won a smaller amount.

I'd buy my dad a brand new car - he's never had one.

I'd give my brother 10 million
Same in trust for each of my nieces.

20 million in trust for my son.

5 million for each of my closest friends.

30 million in the bank, buy a house etc

Rest to charity.

Helendee · 08/10/2021 15:01

Sort out the family, get our own house done up a little, buy a car that costs over £800 ( all we can ever afford) and set up lots of charitable foundations.
