What would you do if you won? Would you go public or would you remain anonymous? How would you tell people or would just keep it a secret? How would you stop your lives from being ruined from it?

OP posts:
MovinOnUp · 08/10/2021 16:22

I'd definitely stay anonymous.
I'd split it three ways.
One third for me, One third for DP and one third for us and the children as a family.

edwinbear · 08/10/2021 16:23

I did a spreadsheet on this earlier.

To pay off the mortgage, pre-pay school fees, replace cars, a holiday, do the work on the house we need and a bit of a spending spree, is £1.3m.

Then £35m for 2 DC in trust, assuming a 0.5% return each year gives them an annual income of £175k, after tax, £8k per month. I'd give the same to DH, but as part of a divorce, he could keep our current house, which would be mortgage free and recently done up. I'd not make a claim on his lucrative pension.

That would leave me with £65.7m. I'd spend £10m on a house, leave £5.7m in the bank as savings and invest the remaining £50m. At 0.5%, that would give me an income of £250k pa, or £11.4k per month. I found myself pondering whether that would actually be enough to cover the expenses on a £10m house Grin

Mommabear20 · 08/10/2021 16:25

£100million into account and pay ourselfs £3,000 a month for bills, food and general fun.

£5 million into trust for DD
£5 million into trust for DS

£4 million for DH parents
£2 million for my DF
£2 million for my DM

£1 million for each of our siblings (£4 million total)

£10million for Me
£10million for DH

Rest to be split between various charities, would love to buy some new equipment for our local hospitals maternity unit as all seems very out dated!

Lawstudentmumtoone · 08/10/2021 16:25

100% keep it anonymous - rich people are always a target for ransom and I have a young daughter to think about.

I have no idea what I would spend it on - but I would hire personal security for the both of us for sure!

SquirrelFan · 08/10/2021 16:29

I'd not tell anyone but I'd keep my job and pay someone else to do the boring/hard bits, but I'd get the credit. And maybe I'd learn something! Plus loads to charity, etc etc.
Off to buy the winning ticket...

leavesthataregreen · 08/10/2021 16:31

Anonymous.

£1mill to every family member.

Stunning house in central London and homes for adult DC.

There is a business I've always wanted to start which is a money pit, but I'd be tempted if the money didn't matter.

Then I'd look for small charities that don't absorb ridiculous amounts into their management heavy admin costs.

tiredanddangerous · 08/10/2021 16:32

I'd definitely want to be anonymous but the problem with that is as soon as you start handing out large cheques to friends and family, word would get around.

Initially I don't think life would change much. The dc still have to go to school so it's not like we could take off round the world. Plus dc1 is autistic and doesn't like doing anywhere!

BluebellCockleshell123 · 08/10/2021 16:34

Definitely stay anonymous & I wouldnt tell anyone exactly how much I had won.

I’d quit my job the next day (but would work my notice).

I’d book an amazing holiday for half term. Somewhere hot, sunny & luxurious.

I’d stay in the same area until the kids have finished school (5yrs). Our house is fine for us so I wouldn’t move as I wouldn’t want the attention. I’d do an extension and redo the bathrooms.

I’d buy my parents a house near us.

I’d buy myself a mini and a cottage in my favourite seaside village.

I’d start up my own charity…something to support children from low income families.

I’d give my 3 siblings & close friends a big slice of the money.

I’d buy a house with a tennis court in Spain and spend as much time as I could there (bloody Brexit allowing)

Mommabear20 · 08/10/2021 16:34

Forgot to say we're buy a nice house and do it up with a budget of £2 million.

Have a cleaner twice a week and a dog trainer! 😂

Redcrayons · 08/10/2021 16:47

I did a spreadsheet on this earlier

Grin kudos.

Add to my list, hire you as my spreadsheet manager.

lockdownmadnessdotcom · 08/10/2021 16:50

I suspect with that sort of money you would be welcomed in with open arms on some sort of investment/high net worth individual visa.

I'd buy a house in Jersey and disappear.

FluffyBooBoo · 08/10/2021 16:56

I am all for the anonymity!

I would do the same as another person suggested and wait a while before telling family, so they don't know how much.

I would buy a flat or maybe a house in the city I currently rent in. Very nice but not extravagant. I have no desire for a massive house. I would get a dog. Maybe two.

A good chunk would go to my adult children, not sure yet in what form. A smaller chunk to my brother, maybe £1 mill.

I would send money anonymously to friends, including some people I'm not really in touch with any more. Probably in varying amounts from £250k to I dunno, £1 mill.

I would like to do something to support others, specifically trafficked individuals/people finding themselves used as slaves and women in forced marriages that can't find a way out.

I would also sink a 5 figure sum into an arts project that I'm involved with that hasn't been able to get off the ground due to funding issues.

And I would invest a chunk to live on. Enough so that I'll never have to worry about money, and I'll be able to travel as much as I like, in luxury. And maybe fund more projects. In fact I might set up a trust for that.

plesiosaurus · 08/10/2021 17:13

I've been thinking about this as I have a relative (not close enough for me to expect anything from them!) who came into a large sum of money and has been spectacularly manipulative with it in regard to his very close family, basically using his wealth as a weapon.
I don't have much in the way of close family. Parents and in-laws are dead. Just my husband and grownup child really.
I would retire straight away, but continue to do a bit of my job in a volunteer capacity. I'd make sure that the money was invested properly to give an income that I could live off, and put money in trust for my dc. Also update my will to account for my new wealth. I'd give a couple of very close friends some money, probably £1m. Employ shit hot lawyer, tax accountant, the lot. Change my phone number and leave the country for a month to get my head round it all.
I'd buy a few properties - flat in London, place in Scotland as my main base. Maybe a place in France. I'd travel. Visit places in comfort. First class air travel.
I'd give generously to my preferred charities.
Materially I'm not that interested in flash cars, expensive clothes and jewellery. I could see myself being happier with the thought that I could buy something than in actually buying it! I guess that's the security that having money brings.

plesiosaurus · 08/10/2021 17:15

Oh and I'd definitely be anonymous!

Wazzzzzzzup · 08/10/2021 17:19

Deffo anonymous. Gift family members.
Kind of emigrate somewhere nicer, but still keep place (flat in a city) here to come visit friends.
Travel, travel, travel.
Decide where to put base down later.

Jmaho · 08/10/2021 17:32

I only hope the usual type don't win it. Like a dinner lady who ends up staying in her council house because she doesn't like change. I like the reckless ones who buy a £50 million Llama farm just because they like Llamas

Shoxfordian · 08/10/2021 17:39

I’d buy beautiful things
First class travel round the world (covid allowing)
Pay off the mortgage, sell the house, buy a much better one. Get the husband an Aston. I’d just hire drivers when I wanted to go anywhere.
Bung a few quid amongst friends and relations
Be relatively anonymous but people would obviously work it out.

the80sweregreat · 08/10/2021 17:51

My life would change for sure.
You only get one shot at life after all

PlanetMJ · 08/10/2021 17:51

A dear and close family member has a progressively terminal illness. I would give all but 10 million of it find a cure and spend the remainder securing the future for their children.

picketingpanic · 08/10/2021 18:05

I have just spent £20 on lucky dips now, thanks to this thread 😂

FluffyBooBoo · 08/10/2021 18:13

The jackpot is now £174 million - the power of an AIBU on mumsnet 😁

Now I'm half wondering if op is employed by them...

TotallyKerplunked · 08/10/2021 18:27

I've been thinking about this for days and I'd love to spend it rebuilding the school I work in. The roof leaks, there are holes in the floor and some of the equipment we use is from the 60s. I'd make it state of the art, all new equipment and fund some scholarships for students and give the teachers a bonus.

I'm not into fancy holidays and flash cars, a bigger house so all the kids have there own room and a cleaner is about all we'd need.

morecheeseplz · 08/10/2021 18:34

I really want a massive refuge to help lots of men & women suffering from domestic abuse. I would have two sides one for the men and the other for women. I'd want lovely modern flats perfect for them to relax. I went into a refuge with my ex and the flat was rank I couldn't stop itching and I ended up going back to him.

BrendaBubbles · 08/10/2021 18:49

Even small things like a new car, or private school or moving house indicates your financial status has changed..

My neighbour has just bought a new car. I hadn't realised they'd won the lottery.

IsAnybodyListening · 08/10/2021 19:02

I'd pay of my mortgage. Buy a holiday home abroad with a pool. Give my DC's enough to be set for life but not millionaires.

The rest of the money i'd invest in an idea I had for a PHD (but haven't actually done). It would take multi millions and help from specialists and agencies around the world but ultimately if proven by peer review and implemented, could save a lot of people. That's my fantasy!

Shame I don't have the financial resources of Elon Musk who could make an actual difference if he wanted to. He just wants to float about space, rocking out with his cock out.
