Chilli related

AIBU unreasonable to be a bit upset here? DH goes to the gym and put a chilli on to cook before he went. I've got a nasty cold so feel a bit rubbish but I've been pottering at home, looking after the kids but by the time he gets back I'm pretty bloody hungry.

DH serves the chilli and its so hot...I managed about 4 mouthfuls but it's seriously hurting my mouth. DH has a much higher tolerance than me.

So now it's gone 8pm and I've had no dinner. I've just started Slimming World so can't just snack or throw chips in the oven. I actually do feel quite upset by this even though I know it's nothing really.

Tone the heat down with something?

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 07/10/2021 20:19

We don't have anything I can tone it down with. And to be honest it's so hot I'd probably need a vat of sour cream/yogurt to even make a dent in it!

I'm just feeling a bit sorry for myself. But I do think he's been a bit inconsiderate.

Yanbu-he should have just thrown some extra chillies on top of his

Bigeggsinapackoften · 07/10/2021 20:21

I just had to put a teriyaki in the bin that I made myself for the same reason. It was far too hot. Sympathy.

DamnUserName21 · 07/10/2021 20:25

Can you mix a bit with rice and throw in a can of veg?

Ozanj · 07/10/2021 20:26

Serve it with yoghurt?

SmileySandwich · 07/10/2021 20:28

Does he normally cook for you? If so he should know you don't like it too chilliy

HomerDancing · 07/10/2021 20:28

Sugar will tone it down. Appreciate that might not work with a diet though.

Lightningrain · 07/10/2021 20:30

I love hot chilli when I’ve got a cold. Something I can actually taste and clears the sinuses.

I’d send DH out to the shop for some yoghurt or sour cream.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 07/10/2021 20:31

He did put chopped chillies on his and even he admitted they were a mistake. And then to add insult to injury he ate half my bowl when I said I couldn't eat it.

And apparently it's my fault because I'm on a diet so we can't have the guacamole or sour cream we normally have. Moving from being slightly annoyed but admit I'm overreacting to genuine cross now

A tin of tomatoes (or baked beans) would work. That’s my emergency fix.

ShinyMe · 07/10/2021 20:34

Is there really nothing else in the house you can eat? It seems a bit passive to say you have to go without any dinner at all.

KupoNutCoffee · 07/10/2021 20:35

Not it makes much difference but was it deliberately too hot, or accidental. It's can be so easy to go a bit overboard, and there'll have definitely been a difference to pre/post slow cooker hotness.

In terms of actual dinner, slimming world can be a bit of a bum, but even beans on toast is better than nothing. Or even a bowl of chips is fine, just adjust your syns tomorrow if you want/need to.

If you don't want to waste the chilli, add another couple tins of chopped tomatoes.

Or just warm up some chopped tomatoes, pasta with various fridge veg, maybe bacon and some herbs. Quick enough. Obviously disappointing not have dinner made but don't starve on SW account!

Horst · 07/10/2021 20:36

Everyone tolerates beat different and even two chillis grown on the same plant can have different levels of spice yabu.

Use yoghurt, coconut milk, tomatoes or sugar to tone it down.

I’m a big chilli head and enjoy the heat where as dh is a korma to a milk madras max. He knows not to eat my chilli or to adapt it to a milder version.

Also are we actually talking hot hot reapers and Armageddon chillis or just too many birds eyes/cayennes.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 07/10/2021 20:37

I have almost zero tolerance of spicy food. I really hate it and I would be upset if my DH made something so hot knowing this.

Nayday · 07/10/2021 20:37

Eggs or beans on toast. Why add to the misery of a cold with hunger too. Your DH messed up the chilli but no need for you to not eat anything else.

mrsbyers · 07/10/2021 20:39

There’s loads of quick meals you could have on slimming world , it’s inconsiderate of him but not abusive

ISpyCobraKai · 07/10/2021 20:39

Was it on purpose?
I know when Dd was at home the odd time something I made was a bit hotter than I'd meant it to be.
Obviously I was apologetic and sorted out an alternative.

ceeveebee · 07/10/2021 20:41

If you have a tin of tomatoes, just empty that into a pan, mix a bit of the Chili in and it should be edible?

RampantIvy · 07/10/2021 20:44

Teriyaki doesn't usually contain chillies, does it?

That's a bit of a leap - I never said he was abusive. He's apologised now (though not offered me any food) so I will bung a potato in the microwave with some beans. We only have crappy white bread in which really isn't worth the syns.

Honestly, baked beans in chilli is really nice. If you’ve got a tin of beans, you can can the chilli heat down with it.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 07/10/2021 20:47

Yes, he should have made milder one then adjusted his, you cook to the lowest tolerance. At the beginning of our relationship I could handle more spice than DH but he’s been pushing to build his tolerance and I’m quite happy where I am. I used to make the milder one and couldn’t be bothered to adjust mine, now he makes the milder one and adjust his.

However, it’s also easy to make something too spicy and to just not eat is being unreasonable. Chuck some tinned tomatoes in (free on SW), baked beans will tone it down and I think are only 1 syn or run out and grab some fat free Greek yogurt. You can have 30g of cheese on top to cool it down, more if you have syns. Also having some sour cream or guacamole won’t be the end of your diet, starving yourself and then at some point this evening or tomorrow being so hungry and saying sod it, will.

dreamingbohemian · 07/10/2021 20:47

I am also confused about the spicy teriyaki!

OP I think it's totally understandable you were upset but if it was a genuine mistake then let it go, and don't worry about dieting when you're ill

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 07/10/2021 20:48

Actually I'm going to make some soup and that will do me for tomorrow lunch too
