Re 'Rickie, Melvin and Charlie' on R1

I decided to listen to Radio 1 the last few days whilst working, it's the first week I've listened since Clara Amfo departed to Annie Mac's slot.

Jesus, they are awful. I can remember switching off Kiss FM years ago because of them and they haven't got any better since switching over to the BBC. Do they possess a brain cell between them? They're completely incoherent, it's actually cringeworthy to listen to. They literally can't seem to construct proper sentences. I'm going to have to switch over.

Yes, I know this is a 'bitchy' post, but bloody hell, is that what we are subjecting our younger generations to? Have they really 'dumbed down' the demographic and audience that much?!

Am I the only one who finds them irritating AF?!

TBH, it isn't just them, I think I may be done with R1 Sad all the DJs seem to irritate me now.

I imagine the generation above mine said very similar about Mark & Lard, Chris Moyles show etc. I loved them when I was in that age range though. So I'd suggest it's not dumbing down, you're just getting older and less in touch with the youth of today (sorry).

Biggety biggety bong.

22Giraffes · 06/10/2021 12:02

They really aren't as bad as you're making out. I used to listen to them on Kiss breakfast on my way to work many years ago. They might not be your cup of tea but to call them incoherent and without a brain cell is just bollocks.

Chocolateflapjack01 · 06/10/2021 12:09

We must be listening to completely different presenters then. They really ARE bad.

How old are you?

TrackyBottomsTuckedinSocks · 06/10/2021 12:11

Bring back Bam Bam and Streetboy! Grin
I still love Moyles on Radio X

HarrietsChariot · 06/10/2021 12:15

Realising that Radio 1 presenters are talking gibberish is a sign you're getting older! I had it when Nick Grimshaw replaced Chris Moyles, it was the last vestige of quality leaving the building. Plenty of people thought Moyles was a shit Mark & Lard, and I remember people at work turning the radio off rather than listening to them. (So work started pumping it out of the PA system, to stop people changing station!)

There's a gap between Radio 1 becoming too ridiculous and Radio 2 becoming suitable. I can handle mornings on Radio 2 but Steve Wright in the Afternoon was fucking abysmal - just as nonsensical as the Radio 1 clowns, but better music (if still largely shit).

Chocolateflapjack01 · 06/10/2021 12:16

I'm 34.

I enjoy Greg James, Clara Amfo (in her new slot), Scott and Chris, so it's not like I'm COMPLETELY opposed to R1 nowadays. But these 3 I just cannot get on with, but then I couldn't even when I was 27 so it's not surprising I can't now.

I just don't understand how grown adults, with a modicum of intelligence, who speak coherently and don't glorify 'acting stupid all the time for the shitz and gigglez' can get on board with them.

I also used to LOVE Chris Moyles and Jo Wiley come to think of it, so perhaps that says a lot about me too.

I've always been a fan of Scott Mills but they do seem to be curtailing his show a lot over recent years. I can remember when him and Chris would do the ghosting segments and I swear it was him that YEARS ago used to do the 'Flirt divert' segment which was hilarious, but you'd never get away with that now so instead it's that 'Brother or Lover' segment Hmm

Dons old lady hat 👵🏻

I don't understand how they're on the "youth" station - the two guys are early 40s and Charlie is mid thirties. There's literally no one in the actual demographic of R1 that could do the job?!

34??? I'm afraid its time to get a nice cup of tea, a comfy chair and blanket and tune into radio 2 and listen to some music with a proper tune and words you can hear
rocksteadyfreddy · 06/10/2021 12:56

I'm finding Virgin radio a good 1.5 as I'm feeling too old for radio 1 but not quite at the radio 2 stage yet!

elbea · 06/10/2021 12:58

I’m probably in their demographic at 28, although at the top end. I think they are entirely dreadful. I turn the radio off rather than listen to them.

ReeseWitherfork · 06/10/2021 13:00

I'm 32 and reckon I was too old for radio 1 at least five years ago. We're not the target demographic at all.

Thatsplentyjack · 06/10/2021 13:01

I agree OP. I listen to radio one a lot. I have my favourites and the ones I don't mind, but I just can not listen to the three of them. It's dire!

Carboncheque · 06/10/2021 13:05

‘Realising that Radio 1 presenters are talking gibberish is a sign you're getting older!’

I agree but I couldn’t stand Chris Moyles - he’s a wart on the arse of humanity.

Greyhedge · 06/10/2021 13:33

They are rubbish. I like all the other presenters on radio 1 so it’s not an age thing (I’m 36) they are just rubbish.

TheGrumpyGoat · 06/10/2021 13:35

I’m 37 and still listen to Radio 1 Blush. Only Greg James though as that’s the only time I have the radio on.

poohaloo · 06/10/2021 13:38

I'm 50 and still love Radio 1
Can't stand Radio 2 as it's so boring

Flashinggreen · 06/10/2021 13:43

I’ve listened to radio 1 since a teenager, 30 years ago! Simon Mayo would be my alarm clock. I’ve needed radio 1.5 for years. I don’t like drum and bass and some other bits but I turn to radio 2 and they’re playing stuff from the 60s. Can’t stand adverts so just flip until I find something ok to listen to.

Greg is very good, liked him when he had the middle of the night slot and used to stand in on days sometimes, never really liked Grimmy. Scott and Chris good, but this trio I’ve not really listened to, but what I’ve heard is not my cuppa. But then Matt Edmondson annoys me….love Clara but I’m a daytime radio listener. Also like Adele.

TopTabby · 06/10/2021 13:44

I finally gave up on Radio 1 aged 34 but I knew I was much too old for it years before that.
I was in limbo for a good few years before settling down with Radio 2 aged 40.Grin
The 'wacky' dj is a very old concept that keeps getting rehashed. When you no longer find it funny then you're too old for it!
Time for a change.

Goatgate · 06/10/2021 13:52

I may actually be dead at 47 but listen to R1 (as well as bits of R1X, 6, 4, 3 and various commercial). RMC are like being on the 221 with the kids who live in Finchley but would like to live in Wood Green for a bit more street cred.

1forAll74 · 06/10/2021 14:02

I use to only like Terry Wogan on radio. !!

Returnoftheowl · 06/10/2021 14:05

I think not liking R1's presenters is a sign you're getting older.

GunsNShips · 06/10/2021 14:06

I absolutely agree OP. I have been listening to Radio 1 beyond by age I should (I’m 40) but cannot bear these 3. They used to be on in the evenings when I was driving home and I couldn’t bear to listen.

See also Dean McCullough on weekends.

InTheNightWeWillWish · 06/10/2021 14:08

I’m not a fan on Ricky, Melvin and Charlie. I find myself glad when I have calls during their show but I always liked listening to Clara. The show is very loud, it’s like they’re all trying to outcompete each other for who is the bigger personality. Charlie by herself on a Saturday is a lot more bearable. Although I can’t really stand Melvin when he’s on TV, so maybe the problem is him.

I think I’m at the point of needing radio 1.5. I’m not really loving Vick and Jordan either, I just don’t think they have the chemistry. Which is a shame as I liked Vick when she was co-hosting with others and Jordan by himself. Matt and Molly are very hit and miss too.
