Re 'Rickie, Melvin and Charlie' on R1

I decided to listen to Radio 1 the last few days whilst working, it's the first week I've listened since Clara Amfo departed to Annie Mac's slot.

Jesus, they are awful. I can remember switching off Kiss FM years ago because of them and they haven't got any better since switching over to the BBC. Do they possess a brain cell between them? They're completely incoherent, it's actually cringeworthy to listen to. They literally can't seem to construct proper sentences. I'm going to have to switch over.

Yes, I know this is a 'bitchy' post, but bloody hell, is that what we are subjecting our younger generations to? Have they really 'dumbed down' the demographic and audience that much?!

Am I the only one who finds them irritating AF?!

TBH, it isn't just them, I think I may be done with R1 Sad all the DJs seem to irritate me now.

I hate their show too. I still like everyone else on R1 though.
Although Im not sure why they put Vick with Jordan, he’s far better alone

Early 30s here. Too old for radio 1 and not yet old enough for radio 2. Maybe the BBC need to shove Radio 2s listeners over to somewhere else and make room for us homeless millennials!

They are dire. At least Mark and Lard, Moyles et al had some intelligent structure behind the comedy.

Listening to Ricky Melvin and Charlie is like eavesdropping on a bunch of school children on the bus after a couple of cans of white lightening.

And why constant grime? I get it, it's cool, but jesus christ it's depressing.

Radio 6 Music. That's your place. A couple of odd socially awkward djs, and an annoying fascination with the music of The Idless but otherwise fantastic.

I listened to RM+C today for the first time and wasn't loving it, but assumed it's my age (43). I miss Clara in that slot. I used to alternate between Clara, and Suzy Klein on Radio 3 , but they've both been reshuffled at the same time and now I feel weirdly lonely, like my friends went to a different school and I have to make new ones.

Sparklesocks · 06/10/2021 14:42

I'm not a fan, but I'm not their demographic. I'm sure people have thought the same thing about 'younger audience' DJs for decades though.

I was only thinking about this today. I’m 38 and have listened to radio 1 since being a teenager, still listen to Greg James in the morning but feeling that I’m getting too old but not ready for the boredom of Radio 2. Ricky Melvin and Charlie are annoying and Matt and Molly are so dull.

I flit between Radio 6 and even trying local stations and Radio 5L, am in Radio limbo atm and it’s annoying!

sHREDDIES19 · 06/10/2021 15:10

They are coherent, I can understand them perfectly. I quite like them but we all have our own opinions and that’s fine. You’re being rather mean about them though don’t you think?!

jerometheturnipking · 06/10/2021 15:16

I like Greg James, I'm 31. But I think he's also around that age. I generally prefer 6 music.

If I ever have the misfortune to come across Scott Mills and Chris whats-his-puss I change over. Scott Mills is far too old for Radio 1, and it's just sad when he talks about nights out and "yoo-ni" at almost 50.

I loved Clara in the mornings and used to turn over the minute R4 became unlistenable to. Since she left that slot I’ve found myself somewhat listless between say 10.30 and 12.45. Not a chance I’ll be wasting any time with the raucous bilge they’ve replaced her with. It’s discombobulating, though.

And I’d completely forgotten she’s moved to evenings!

Lightningrain · 06/10/2021 15:24

I realised a couple of years ago that I was starting to dislike most of the R1 presenters (early thirties).

I find Virgin Radio a good middle ground between R1 and R2. I still think most of the music on R2 is from my parents’ generation and can’t stand the incessant waffling on the talk segments.

Allthesefolks · 06/10/2021 15:39

6 Music all the way. I listen to Radio X sometimes but Chris Moyles and Johnny Vaughn so awful, I can’t believe I used to like CM on Radio 1!

LampLighter414 · 06/10/2021 15:59

They were fun on Kiss Breakfast but since moving to BBC they had awful timeslots and now I actually get to listen to them in their new one, they are just not half as fun.

I'm guessing the BBC had to pay quite big money to get them to switch and I can't say its worth it.

jimmyhill · 06/10/2021 16:39

Time for Radio 2, OP

ConstanceGracy · 06/10/2021 17:36

They’re awful and I said the same thing when I heard them. Terrible

ConstanceGracy · 06/10/2021 17:37

I listen to absolute 00’s now as they play a lot of indie
