Do you have a bath mat in your bath?

My DP moved in with me 18 months ago and insisted we use a bath mat in our bath for when we have a shower (I have a shower over bath) as he says it’s too slippy without.

I didn’t particularly mind as my bathroom is quite tired and the sight of seeing a white plastic mat in the bath didn’t really bothered me. Even though I do find them very unattractive and unhygienic (I do clean it often)! I let it go as it’s something he prefers to have.

However, I have a bathroom refurb coming up - high quality goods, all lovely designed etc, and the thought of putting a white plastic bath mat back in my beautiful bathroom I think will just look awful.

I’ve never had one before, maybe in the 80’s, and have only ever seen them in older peoples bathrooms as a safety item. Looks quite old fashioned to me and don’t think it will go with my new shiny bathroom!

It made me wonder, how common are they and do people still use them?

YABU - they’re perfectly fine and safe thing to have
YABNU - I’d never have something so unsightly and unhygienic in my bathroom!

@dementedpixie

I have recently bought stick on non slip circles and they are in the bath to stop slipping. I was fed up of the mouldy bath mat. They are easier to clean too

slipsaway.co.uk/ got them from here

Thank you! I’ll take at look at these. Might be worth trying so I can see for myself how they work (DP said they’re not that good)

No I slipped on the fucker and nearly broke my fanjo on the side of the bath!

Mabelface · 01/10/2021 15:42

I didn't, until my partner had a shower here and slipped, breaking 2 ribs, pulling down the rail and cracked 2 tiles. I stick it up on the tiles to drain after a shower and scrub the underside regularly. Safety is more important than aesthetics to me.

Flufferty · 01/10/2021 16:02

I have one as I don’t want to risk slipping. I even take mine on holiday 😂

whomoon · 01/10/2021 16:10

@PatchworkElmer

I’d definitely just get him to dry it and put it away when he’s done
This feels like the most simple solution to me too 👍🏻

@Peaplant20

You can’t really see it in the bath can you? Like will it be that noticeable that it will take away from the look of the bathroom? I have one as was petrified of slipping over in the shower when pregnant and then I still use it now when bathing baby so I don’t slip when getting in and out of the bath to bath her.
I notice it I think because I’ve never had one. And all of a sudden a have a plastic mat in my bath that didn’t used to be there, so it’s just become more obvious to me. I think I just need a better looking one. The white one DP bought recently from Aldi has a blue tinge which I think is probably the reason I think it looks awful. Amazon here I come!

@ThinWomansBrain

any way that you can fit in a separate shower when you refit the bathroom?
I would have loved a separate shower, and there is room for it, but it would have meant moving the toilet to the other side of the room which was getting expensive Sad It’s not our forever home so not worth the investment right now.

@MaudLively

We don't have a bath mat, but we do have these anti slip stickers in our shower. They've been stuck in place for 2 years and still in perfect condition.
Ooh! They look interesting! I think I’ll try these out. Thank you!

Is this new toilet brush?😂

I got one. Clean it with the bathroom.

Minkribs · 01/10/2021 16:44

Yes but it only goes in while someone is showering then is removed immediately afterwards to dry in the airing cupboard.

minipie · 01/10/2021 16:44

We used the non slip circles that you stick on. I wouldn’t want to stick them to a brand new bath though, they don’t come off easily. Also you would want to keep them to the bit you stand in as they are rough on the bum,

PivotPivotPivottt · 01/10/2021 16:47

I have one but only because I'm a private rented house and the bath has chunks of enamel missing. If I had a nice bath I wouldn't have one it annoys me.

Anonymous48 · 01/10/2021 16:48

@Polmuggle

I've never known anyone have these until they get elderly!

I also know no one who has fallen in the shower.

Well aren't you lucky?

I'm completely healthy and pretty athletic and I slipped in the shower when I was in my early 40's. It was a freak split second accident, but I ended up with a serious injury which took many months to recover from. I was lucky because it could have been worse.

everythingbackbutyou · 01/10/2021 16:51

I have one as it is infinitely preferable to scrubbing the bottom of the tub

Anonymous48 · 01/10/2021 16:52

@Wannabegreenfingers

Never had one, never needed one, even for the kids
I never needed one until I slipped in the shower and hurt myself very badly. It took close to a year to fully heal, but I was lucky because it could have been worse.

I've never "needed" a seatbelt either, having never been in a car accident. I still wear one every time I'm in a car. Your argument is illogical.

FateHasRedesignedMost · 01/10/2021 16:52

Only in the DC bathroom, in case he slips. It’s clear plastic with goldfish pictures so easy to spot and clean any mould. And it’s draped over the side of the bath to dry when not in use.

You can get stuck on ‘dots’ to prevent slipping if a mat bothers you?

Siriisatwat · 01/10/2021 16:53

I find them so unhygienic.

The first time I stayed at MIL house, I needed to have a bath. She had one and I took it out -
it was mouldy, filthy, covered in old hairs 🤢

Horrible bloody things.

Anonymous48 · 01/10/2021 16:56

Like others have, I suggest the stick on non slip circles. We put them in our walk in shower after I slipped and had a very nasty accident. (Of course I wish I'd had them in there before, but we never thought about it!) They work well, and are barely noticeable. Much nicer than a bath mat.

Antinerak · 01/10/2021 17:06

Yes, only because my uncle as a child slipped in the bath, hit his head and later that evening passed away aged 8. It may be ugly but I'd rather have an ugly mat out than a cracked open skull. I put it in the cupboard and only bring it out when I'm having a bath so it's not a major eyesore.

We have those too @whomoon. We have a shower over the bath only.

They work very well, you can barely see them and a quick scrub with bathroom cleaner makes them pristine again when they start looking noticeable. I'd much rather those than a mat with suckers, as mould and soap scum can compromise the suckers' grip and make the mat easily detached.

They weren't expensive either.

Tailendofsummer · 01/10/2021 17:40

Mine is clear with glitter Smile

Hummmph · 01/10/2021 18:28

Mine looks like clear pebbles and is actually quite nice to look at. Would fit perfectly into a modern bathroom. I've always had bath mats, partially for the children, partially because watching Final Destination as a teen scared the shit out of me.

Noogar · 01/10/2021 18:31

@wetpebbles

I know someone who slipped, hit their head and had a brain bleed, so yes to bath mats
I'm getting one after reading this. Thank you.
MsSquiz · 01/10/2021 18:40

We had a full bathroom refurb when I was pregnant with DD, all high quality goods, and we have a bath mat in the bath. It's for DD and me when I (very rarely) have a bath as I'm not tall enough to prop myself up in our lovely big bath!
Ours gets scrubbed and put in the washer once a week

Vicliz24 · 01/10/2021 18:46

I have to have one because my bath is too long for me to lie down in without anchoring myself 😂
