Do you have a bath mat in your bath?

My DP moved in with me 18 months ago and insisted we use a bath mat in our bath for when we have a shower (I have a shower over bath) as he says it’s too slippy without.

I didn’t particularly mind as my bathroom is quite tired and the sight of seeing a white plastic mat in the bath didn’t really bothered me. Even though I do find them very unattractive and unhygienic (I do clean it often)! I let it go as it’s something he prefers to have.

However, I have a bathroom refurb coming up - high quality goods, all lovely designed etc, and the thought of putting a white plastic bath mat back in my beautiful bathroom I think will just look awful.

I’ve never had one before, maybe in the 80’s, and have only ever seen them in older peoples bathrooms as a safety item. Looks quite old fashioned to me and don’t think it will go with my new shiny bathroom!

It made me wonder, how common are they and do people still use them?

YABU - they’re perfectly fine and safe thing to have
YABNU - I’d never have something so unsightly and unhygienic in my bathroom!

These aren't too offensive

Have a lovely one outside of the bath but not stuck in the bath.

StrychnineInTheSandwiches · 01/10/2021 12:36

I do think it’s very strange for an able bodied adult to use one and whilst they’re obviously not gross if cleaned properly, they would somewhat ruin the aesthetic of a shiny new bathroom.

Able bodied people use them so they don't slip and become a disabled body. Confused

Can’t see the bath mat but it’s suckered on safely to dry and doesn’t use up cupboard space

Problem solved! I agree OP! They’re not pretty.
Mindymomo · 01/10/2021 12:43

I’ve got a clear one and it gets put in washing machine to keep it looking clear. I hurt my shoulder and have gotten used to using it. My DH is a plumber and only fits anti slip baths and showers.

FangsForTheMemory · 01/10/2021 12:44

I’ve got one, I put it in the washing machine with a slosh of vinegar to clean it. They’re not beautiful but neither is a broken bone.

LaBellina · 01/10/2021 12:47

We don’t have one, but we have a separate bath and shower. Afaik my parents also don’t have any in their baths.

My grandmother had one and my mother complained what a disgusting thing it was, discolored and dirty.

muddyford · 01/10/2021 12:51

We have them in our walk in showers and for overbath showers in a previous house. They are rubber and don't discolour like plastic ones do. I just scrub the grot off the underside once in a while. I've been using them since I was in my thirties.

RitaFires · 01/10/2021 12:52

I bought one when I moved into my house because of the shower over the bath and then when I tried to sucker it on it turned out the bath already had a non slip surface so it wouldn't stick.

I'm sure there's some kind of compromise you can arrive at so things are safe but not unsightly in your new bathroom.

notanatural2018 · 01/10/2021 12:53

Yes but it's for bathing the toddler and baby, not for us showering in the bath

MiddlesexGirl · 01/10/2021 12:57

Can't you get a proper non-slip showering end to the bath itself?

whomoon · 01/10/2021 13:13

@purplesequins I didn’t know you could put them in the washing machine either! I am definitely going to be doing this.

@userxx

I'm a bath person so they'd be no chance! Bloody awful things. Can you ask him to move out ? :)
Haha! Love the drastic measure. Unfortunately I kinda like having him around, even with his Bath mat Grin

@RedLipClass

I don't like them either! Can you tell him he can have one but he'll need to take it out the bath, dry it and put it away after every shower?
You know, I hadn’t even considered putting it away after each use.. sounds like a reasonable compromise!

That’s an interesting solution! I’ll have to test that as I’m not sure if you’d still be able to see it on the side from the direction we walk into the bathroom.

It’s funny because Bath mats make me feel sick. Those god awful suckers. Eugh that disgusting sound they make when you peel them up. The texture of the mats too, warm and rough.

Yuk yuk yuk 🤮

Proudboomer · 01/10/2021 13:21

I don’t see the big deal even if they are on the ugly side. It is not like you hang around in your bathroom staring at your shower.

Nanny2many · 01/10/2021 13:21

You can get little textured patches that stick onto the floor or shower or batch which look a lot more discreet. They do t last forever but they’re quite cheap to replace!

idontlikealdi · 01/10/2021 13:21

Not since the kids were small.

whomoon · 01/10/2021 13:22

@RollaCola84

I had a bath mat in my old house, it was the first time I'd had a shower over bath for years and heard all the same things about slipping.

A few months in the bath mat came loose from the bath and I nearly knocked myself out on the side of the bath. Binned it and haven't had one since.

This is what happened to me when I was younger! I think this where my dislike for them came from as I have always felt unsafe standing on them.

SpeckyWithTheGoodHair · 01/10/2021 13:24

No as one lulled me into a very false sense of security once.

Felt quite 'stuck' when I stood on it at first, then it slid away from me and I ended up with a twisted ankle and bruises on my back and bum.

dementedpixie · 01/10/2021 13:24

I have recently bought stick on non slip circles and they are in the bath to stop slipping. I was fed up of the mouldy bath mat. They are easier to clean too

slipsaway.co.uk/ got them from here

SirenSays · 01/10/2021 13:29

I don't use one, but omg my life flashed before my eyes when I slipped in the shower last month 😅

kersh33 · 01/10/2021 13:29

Yep - I have an over bath shower and managed to slip and crack 3 ribs on the bath. I wouldn't recommend it, much better to have a bath mat!
