To ask if anyone else is getting a very faint scent of smoke in the air?

Bit of an odd question I know! I am in the North West-it isnt COVID, a few neighbours can also smell it but it is very, very subtle and almost as soon as you smell it, its gone. The air feels dirty as well-is it very stupid of me to wonder if it is related to the volcanic eruption in Las Palmas? I know the news mentioned France was being impacted by it.

Has anyone else noticed it?

People are beginning to light their log burners around here..

Theunamedcat · 27/09/2021 19:36

We have had a few fires locally so it smells like a cigarette box over here still at least todays torrent of rain has washed the ash off my car Wink

Lex345 · 27/09/2021 19:41

Yes it could be something like that-its a bit distinctive though. Maybe someone locally has started using a new log burner or had a fire with something a bit different. Its a bit like an ear worm, but a nose one!

Log burners and fires are going on for the first time in months - it's bloody freezing!

LtDansLegs · 27/09/2021 19:44

North west based as well - yes we can smell it too!! Assuming it's the far neighbours log burners perhaps 😊

VestaTilley · 27/09/2021 19:47

It’s getting to be bonfire season as people burn their summer garden waste.

eandz13 · 27/09/2021 19:48

NW too, I can very strongly tonight but I think neighbours have the log burner out in their back yard. I know what you mean about other nights though (like last night), I could smell it faintly then. I always associate that smell with bonfire night!

Lex345 · 27/09/2021 19:49

@LtDansLegs Glad its not just me!

I know it sounds stupid, but it smells different to normal fires that we have this time of year. Something or nothing I guess!

Summersun2020 · 27/09/2021 19:49

NW here too, there’s been a massive scrapyard fire locally that has taken the fire brigade 2 days to extinguish- maybe related to that?

Lex345 · 27/09/2021 19:50

Ah that would make a lot of sense @summersun2020 thank you!

Weirdly, the other day I kept getting brief sniffs of what smelt like a match after it had just been blown out. Not north west, mind!

Lex345 · 27/09/2021 20:35

Yes! It does smell like that!

Just gone into the alley to have a good sniff - I can't smell anything and now I feel left out... Grin

TheCanyon · 27/09/2021 20:53

I'm in the Scottish borders, 3 times this evening I've walked round the house and garden to make sure something's not on fire. Driving me nuts

bearlyactive · 27/09/2021 21:05

South East here and people have been commenting on a burning smell on local FB groups, I could smell it when I came out of work but not when I got home (10 minutes away)

Tereseta · 27/09/2021 21:19

Was coming on to say same a pp, there has been a massive scrap yard fire in Liverpool which we can still smell. Also a wiff of gas in the air as the old gas storage is getting dismantled at the moment (according to dh!)

Tereseta · 27/09/2021 21:36

Grin hope the neighbours didn't see you!
Sh05 · 27/09/2021 21:39

I'm in the north west and I first noticed the smell
yesterday morning around 11.
It smells like paper burning but not nearby if that makes sense.

drum123 · 27/09/2021 21:51

I'm in the south east and there is a definite, occasional waft of a smell like someone has recently been smoking a cigarette. Thought my mum or dad had come back to haunt me! Joking aside, I wonder what it really is?

Wombat49 · 27/09/2021 21:55

North Wales & I've been muttering about this for several weeks. Asked the Council if they knew of any issues with the tip or people doing dodgy burning of rubbish.

It's driving me batty, like a faint burning smell, just at the edge of what makes it uncomfortable.

VanGoSunflowers · 27/09/2021 21:56

Yes! I have and I’m in the Midlands

Porfre · 27/09/2021 21:57

From the NW.

I've smelt some burning too on a few occasions.

Hessneakingoutagain · 27/09/2021 22:17

Weird

Libraryghost · 27/09/2021 22:19

Funny you should mention that. I am in the north midlands and I noticed a fine black ash dust on my car and windowsill this morning. I had the same thought as you. Could be coincidence I suppose!

Libraryghost · 27/09/2021 22:22

Just been outside in my PJs. I can’t smell anything but husband says he could this morning. I am curious now!
