To ask if anyone else is getting a very faint scent of smoke in the air?

Bit of an odd question I know! I am in the North West-it isnt COVID, a few neighbours can also smell it but it is very, very subtle and almost as soon as you smell it, its gone. The air feels dirty as well-is it very stupid of me to wonder if it is related to the volcanic eruption in Las Palmas? I know the news mentioned France was being impacted by it.

Has anyone else noticed it?

I'm Sth East in a village. Yesterday I passed 2 fields which had low, ground fires burning. They had people managing them so I assume burning off the stems of old crops? Possibly wheat? I've also smelt lots of garden waste being burnt this last week.

I kept smelling smoke yesterday - I was inside - and the smell disappeared as quickly as it came. It was freaking me out a little Confused

I am NW too Shock

Not smelt it today though.

cheeseislife8 · 27/09/2021 22:27

Yep, it's getting chilly round our way so people are lighting fires and log burners. Smells lovely and autumnal

TLKlover · 27/09/2021 22:28

We could smell something yday in NW too, like a mix of paper burning and a not so nice bbq.

Husband then smelt cigarette smoke later on in the night.

No smell today, it's very odd!

SlipperTripper · 27/09/2021 22:28

I smelt burning tonight, got really panicky running round the kitchen sniffing plug sockets and appliances... eventually tracked the smell down to my corned beef sandwich. Thought my DH was going to piss himself once he'd calmed me down.

In my defence, I'm pregnant - everything is on it's bloody head at the moment 😵‍💫

DroopyClematis · 27/09/2021 22:30

It's the smell of autumn. People are starting their fires up.
It's a lovely smell.

I’m in Liverpool and there has been a huge fire at a scrap yard, the smell is lingering and travelling quite far as I’m no where near it.

LouLou789 · 27/09/2021 22:35

And farmers have got their crops in. Yesterday we drove 40 miles to see friends. On two occasions (rurally) we could smell burning so I thought “stubble in fields”

Innovationstandard · 27/09/2021 22:38

Isn't it illegal now to burn stubble? I remember that from years ago, great blankets of flames and smoke across the fields and lanes!

HPandTheNeverEndingBedtime · 27/09/2021 22:41

It could be volcanic ash, because of its tiny size and low density it can travel up to 10,000 miles and stay afloat for years. Its also more likely to cause, eye, nose and lung irritation than other burnt material.

JaceLancs · 27/09/2021 22:41

I’m north west and was in Liverpool yesterday and saw the smoke and chemical smells down by docks - assume that was it
Tonight’s heavy shower seems to have got rid of most of it now though

Yep!! I'm sure I could smell burning in the office earlier, I was checking the sockets! Once outside it was much stronger, more sulphur smelling. Quite odd.

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 27/09/2021 22:52

We've been getting fireworks here. West mids

Lex345 · 27/09/2021 22:52

Its definitely got worse tonight here. Interesting that it seems to be across England.

Yes, but I'm near London and I just assumed it was my teenager smoking in their bedroom. Now I'm thinking they might be innocent.

SuperApple · 27/09/2021 23:10

How odd. I've just had my husband stand in the hall with me to check I wasn't imaging the string smell of smoke. Although, we have plenty of log burners round here, but it wasn't that smell.
