To ask what these bugs/flies are that are in my house?

Since later in the summer there seems to be lots of these little fly things upstairs in my house. They are about the size of a 5p maybe slightly bigger with legs spread out!
I live in the country so lots of fields around not sure if that makes a difference but I really need to know what they are!
Does anyone know please?

They daddy long legs, they always about this time of year. They disappear when it gets cold

user1496951456 · 26/09/2021 20:23

They are much much smaller than daddy long legs.

They are not daddy-long-legs, which are larger (than a 5pm) and longer.

We have those in your picture OP, each year, but this year they seem to be in significantly higher numbers. Not sure what they are though.

ThreeLittleDots · 26/09/2021 20:28

I don't know, but I always imagine they're like some sort of crap cousin to a mosquito

Zeal · 26/09/2021 20:30

Yes, I think they are related to a mosquito. They look very similar in formation.

user1496951456 · 26/09/2021 20:32

They look so similar to a mosquito, I did a good image search and it came up mosquito, but my DH said that mosquito are much smaller.
They just give me the creeps, especially as I can't identity what they are.

Quick Google came up with Banded Mosquito?

thinkfast · 26/09/2021 20:35

Looks like a mosquito to me. Are you near water? Do you or your neighbours have a pond?

WellThatsATurnipForTheBooks · 26/09/2021 20:35

Do they make that high pitched whine that a mosquito makes because I could hear something like that in our bedroom last night?

ThreeLittleDots · 26/09/2021 20:36

Culiseta annulata

Generalpost · 26/09/2021 20:36

Squish it. You can actually see the bit they inject you with when they suck your blood Shock

My house is awful for insects . Have mosquitos. At least 3 daddy long legs. Moths and about 8 of them force widow spiders . 🕷

user1496951456 · 26/09/2021 21:12

@WellThatsATurnipForTheBooks yes! I swear they make that horrible whining noise!

@thinkfast I live quite close to a large water garden! But lots of trees in between that and our house.

Surely mosquitos don't live in Yorkshire though?

WeAreTheHeroes · 26/09/2021 21:18

You get mosquitoes in the UK - especially when it's warm. The ones that look like that are pretty common here.

Bimblybomeyelash · 26/09/2021 21:19

We just call them mosquitoes 🤷‍♀️

AlCalavicci · 26/09/2021 21:21

I have a few in my house too along with a billon bastard fruit flies .
I don't think they are mozziz , they are only a few mm long ( more like the size of a fruit fly ) but I don't know what they are .
I don't have any water within about a 15 walk from me.

Somanysocks · 26/09/2021 21:21

It's only the females that bite though. The males don't have the pointy needle part.

roopy770 · 26/09/2021 21:22

Why? Do you think they prefer London or something? Grin

I have those (and loads of irritating little flies too). I’m sure it’s those ones that leave me with horrid red bumps on my skin where I’ve been bitten. Have you noticed any unusual red marks or bumps on your or your families skin?

Mia184 · 26/09/2021 21:24

They are a midge. Come out in warm wet times. I've had a number of them the last few days.

user1496951456 · 26/09/2021 21:32

I've been bitten a few times lately, I'm now resorting to wearing legging and a t shirt to bed!

OP posts:
OneTC · 26/09/2021 21:34

They're mosquitos, there's 30+ different types in the UK alone

They look like c. annulata, which are pretty common late in summer.

They bite. Kill them now

Feetupteashot · 26/09/2021 21:46

We have them too but I don't think they've ever bitten me and I usually get massive bumps to mozzie bites
