UC help, I'm losing my mind

Please advise me, is it possible to apply for EU settlement scheme while being British citizen with British passport???
3 mths ago we started getting requests from UC for my husband (British) to provide proof of settled status in UK. We wrote and explained million times that he doesn't have settled status because he has British citizenship. Latest message is: if you haven't applied, you need to do it. Am I losing my mind, or the guy from UC has no idea what he's asking for..?

Have you provided proof of your husbands citizenship? That might then stop them asking

DamnUserName21 · 26/09/2021 20:16

EU settlement scheme does not apply to Brits.
Have you sent UC a copy of your DH passport??? I suggest you upload to your journal.

JasperHale · 26/09/2021 20:17

There's nowhere to attach it, we sent them his passport number, and asked number of times how to provide the copy, scan or original. Ignored.

I've no advice, just wanted to say Hi Jasper! 😂

DamnUserName21 · 26/09/2021 20:23

Phone them to open upload link and follow up with a clear note on your journal saying you have been trying to upload proof of nationality/residence and leave it at that. Just say EU settlement does not apply as British.

You can't upload to the journal.
UndertheCedartree · 26/09/2021 20:28

@JasperHale - you have my sympathy as I continueously lose my mind with UC. Most of the staff do not have a clue. You are told something different each time you phone. Journal entries are totally ignored. I wish I knew how to sort out anything with them but it seems impossible.

Danikm151 · 26/09/2021 20:29

Has your hubby ever lived/worked overseas?
That might be an element of it, I suggest you call and ask for advice.
Sometimes the journal is useless

He called, he messaged, he updated them million times, even gave his passport number, still the same request, like a broken record, see for yourselves:

I witted with a guy who was thick as pig shit, honestly have never known utter incompetence and idiocy in my puff! Ge now works for DWP, therefore you face my sympathy.

Hankunamatata · 26/09/2021 23:31

I'd contact your local political representative. That's just crazy

OhLordyWhatNow · 26/09/2021 23:47

Ask for an escalation and to speak with the work coach team leader.

I think this should be referred to another team within DWP to check your account is accurate.

Have you checked what nationality he has listed on his account? If it's not British it will keep triggering a request for EU settled status.

Stars1979 · 26/09/2021 23:52

You have my full sympathy, I wonder why they are even asking. I think complaint is right way. You could put a journal note saying, you are a British Citizen, you can provide proof of an uploaded passport, if they provide the mean to do it (they should send you an evidence link them). Tell them you want a call today (monday) from a manager to resolve this issue and provide your number. I had journel notes being ignored, updates didnt make sense. I sent a journel not telling them to call me that day and my number and they did, problem was resolved. Good luck!

My Cllr is great, but she's on mat leave, so she sent my email to MP, lets see what happens next. They messed up with my head so much I started questioning if he really needs settled status..?

Thank you for all your advice, I will do all that tomorrow, I was really questioning my sanity.

Speak to someone at CAB, if you give your husband's Nino they should see from his contributions record that he is a citizen.

DamnUserName21 · 27/09/2021 19:56

How frustrating, OP!! Ask for to open a link so you can submit passport document.

@UndertheCedartree, you can upload to UC but they need to open a link so it can be done. When I need to upload something, I ask them in the journal to open a link up so I can them submit my documents.

Musereader · 28/09/2021 17:08

I am a case manager on UC and we have not been told what to do with these, our instructions just seem to assume everyone will apply for the euss thing and then the journal message says for you to report anything else in the journal and we do nothing, because we don't have any instructions as to what to do.

I have sent a question via my manager today hopefully they will tell us what to do and I can tell you what should happen

LakieLady · 28/09/2021 17:17

That's really helpful of you, @Musereader!

I'll be interested to hear the outcome. I've had some really weird decisions with UC lately and have had to escalate 2 cases.

I feel sorry for the staff, they really don't seem to have had much training in what is a very complex benefit.

JasperHale · 28/09/2021 17:43

Ok, so latest update is that my husband has an appointment in the Job Centre tomorrow to show his passport, and hopefully it will be the end of it, but in the meantime he got a reply from UC yet again to do what his to-do list tells him to do. Which is to report in his journal that he's British citizen.

OP posts:
ArthurApples · 28/09/2021 17:49

They'll scan in his passport at the Job Centre and upload it to his file, send him in with any other ID he has too, belt and braces to confirm his identity, driving licence, bank card, marriage certificate, that sort of thing.

carben · 28/09/2021 18:06

Hi Jasper

It sounds to me like when he made the claim he didn't report that he was a UK citizen either by accident or misunderstanding the question. If you go to your journal and go back over the declaration he made when he first applied that should show what he reported regarding his nationality. This is likely to be what has caused the issue. UC will need to see his ID and passport to verify he is a UK citizen before any changes can be made.

JasperHale · 28/09/2021 18:06

@ArthurApples they did not ask for any of this... 😱
