99% of people calling other people Idiots for buying fuel.

what a hateful place social media has become

Stay off social media and Mumsnet if you find it is full of idiots, or just avoid the petrol thread in here.

The petrol saga is a bit like the toilet roll affair. Everyone who can't get petrol screams at the people who have bought some and calls them selfish idiots.

BlusteryLake · 26/09/2021 17:58

I have to say, the petrol outrage is getting a bit wearing. My Nextdoor is full of threads essentially saying "I am queuing for petrol and am outraged that other people are too. Their reasons for wanting petrol are obviously not as valid as mine"

FlibbertyGiblets · 26/09/2021 18:04

I don't think 99 per cent of posts on MN this weekend have consisted of people calling other people Idiots for buying fuel.

Case dismissed

Apricotblue · 26/09/2021 18:07

Yes I’ve seen numerous posts blaming ‘other people’ or the media. When are people going to blame the people in charge who saw this coming weeks ago?! The government must be delighted people are blaming each other and the media.

Dinoroaraus · 26/09/2021 18:09

Maybe look at some of the other sections? Style and beauty is fun and the Christmas one is in full swing.

ConsulTremas · 26/09/2021 18:10

Social media is thoroughly toxic. It’s a barnacle on the arse of society.

Tal45 · 26/09/2021 18:12

Has it not calmed down today? We went to our local petrol station and there were other cars but no queue. Yesterday at Sainsburys they were directing the traffic because the queue went all round the car park.

Mantlemoose · 26/09/2021 18:12

Oops I would be guilty of that. I really don't understand why so many intelligent people (including colleague's) can't work out that the forecourts hold tens of thousands of litres of fuel so irrespective of the top up fuel being a week late , the pumps still won't run dry, except when people panic buy. It also takes more fuel to run a car with a full tank as opposed to half a tank. So yes if you purchased fuel outwith your normal, you are an idiot!

BigWoollyJumpers · 26/09/2021 18:17

There have been so many threads about general doom and gloom too. All populated by seemingly far left socialists, anyone who dares to inject some sensible reasoning is branded a "tory shill", which I had to look up. It's weird. It's almost although the whole globe hasn't just gone through a pandemic (runs and hides).

CorrBlimeyGG · 26/09/2021 18:19

The irony is that people making these posts are the ones perpetuating the issue.

CorrBlimeyGG · 26/09/2021 18:23

@BigWoollyJumpers Tell me about it, those bloody extremists wanting decent healthcare and enough income that they can feed their kids. Communist woke something all lives matter ...

IsThisIt2021 · 26/09/2021 18:26

The local filling station put a post on social media saying due to zero fuel of any kind they’re closed until they get a delivery Tuesday mid day. The comments have made for a extremely fun Sunday afternoon Grin

lifehappened · 26/09/2021 18:41

It is pretty boring. I wish something fun would happen so we can all talk about that

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/09/2021 18:42

there was a handy post in my immediate area, saying only diesel, and then a couple of hours later, no diesel and delivery due tuesday, so that is ok but the wider areas are shitty

definitely i should go on other threads.

It’s not just social media though, is it? A random man berated me through my car window for queuing for petrol today - I’m 36 weeks pregnant and need to make sure that I can get to hospital and back, which wouldn’t have been certain on the 30 mile range that I had left in the tank 🤷🏻‍♀️

People have been showing their arses left, right and centre.

gailplattshairbrush · 26/09/2021 19:04

The fuel hoggers really are idiots though. I'm not talking about people who genuinely needed fuel but those who flock to the pumps despite having half a tank because they've fallen for the media bullshit once again are the ones who have created an actual fuel shortage! It really is idiotic, there's no other word for it.

ellyeth · 26/09/2021 19:05

Some people positively enjoy being outraged and judging the behaviour of others. It has certainly come to the fore since Covid. There must be some people on Mumsnet who have been concerned and gone to fill up their tanks. They are probably lying low.

I can't drive but, to be fair, if I could and I knew I was running low and I absolutely needed to drive somewhere in the very near future I may well be queuing along with the others.

As others have said, the government was surely aware that this might happen, given the shortage of delivery drivers. Why no plans to pre-empt this (and other related problems) before it came to the attention of the media and caused panic?

DanielRicciardosSmile · 26/09/2021 19:26

We've had buses rerouted and cancelled. Roads blocked for a mile or more. All due to people queuing for petrol. They can't all be on fumes, otherwise this would be the situation every weekend.

Notthemessiah · 26/09/2021 20:11

The people who thought this but at the same time didn’t realise that the rest of the country would panic buy anyway, and are now moaning that they have empty tanks, are the real idiots if you ask me.
Apricotblue · 26/09/2021 23:44

@Mantlemoose the pumps ‘ran dry’ by us before the panic buying. There was a problem with fuel supplies before this weekend, unlike toilet paper.

sst1234 · 27/09/2021 00:37

You know you don’t have to read it, right? This kind of faux rage is honestly very tiring. Everyone who comes out with it is really enjoying the show, but wants to pretend otherwise.

malificent7 · 27/09/2021 04:23

"Social media is the barnacle on the arse of society!" Grin
Best thing i've resd on here for ages!

Porridgealert · 27/09/2021 05:15

These fuel runs are really annoying. Despite so many people filling up, there's still loads of petrol left so there doesn't seem to be a,shortage. SO even if the govt had seen that people would go off their heads (sorry op), how would you suppose the govt could stop people queuing up? It's very annoying. We're meant to be going away on Thursday but without petrol, we're not going anywhere. I guess I just have to grit my teeth and queue.
