Is 9 o'clock unusually late?

No matter how organised I try to be, dh and I rarely sit down before 9pm.

I finish work, do the school run, a bit of housework after school, vac, put a wash on, youngest' spellings, reading books, then make dinner for 6pm when dh gets home 3 evenings we have kids clubs on after school).

By the times we've ate dinner, cleared up, put the washing load away, kids showers, made lunches for the next day. It's 9pm.

I'm sure years ago when I only had one child my evening started at 7.30pm once the baby was asleep.

No, sounds normal to me - DP and I usually sit down for the night about 9.30. We've got 4 kids

CreamFirstThenJamOnTop · 22/09/2021 21:08

About 8.30 - 9.00 ish.
Tea, kids baths and bed, few chores and getting things ready for the next day.

Usually go to bed about 11.00 during the week and those couple of hours go so fast!

TooWicked · 22/09/2021 21:09

We usually sit down for the night around 7.30. We have one 18 y/o child.

I work from home and get lots of the daily household stuff done during the day. We outsource cleaning, ironing and gardening Grin. Of an evening we only really have to cook tea and clear away afterwards.

shouldistop · 22/09/2021 21:10

We have a 5yo and a 9mo. I'm still on maternity leave and DH works mainly from home 8am-4pm so I think we're pretty lucky.

I collect ds1 from school at 2.50pm and we're home by 3.00pm, he then has a snack and watches tv until the baby gets up from his nap around 3.45pm then he plays with the baby until 5.00pm.
Dh makes dinner when he finishes at 4 so we eat together about 5.
At 5.45 I do homework with ds1 while dh takes the dog and baby out for a walk.
6.30/6.45pm it's baths, story & bed. Everyone tends to be settled around 7.30pm and we relax.
One day ds1 has swimming lesson at 4.30 and one day he has athletics at 4.30 so that pushes dinner back and we usually don't do homework those nights.

Once I'm back at work 3 days there will probably be chores to do in the evening unless dh picks them up during his lunch hour but he usually takes the dog for a long walk at lunch.

Usualsundayblues · 22/09/2021 21:10

Earlier than I should but that’s because I don’t do as much as I should at night!

Auntycorruption · 22/09/2021 21:10

8.30/9ish here. I haven't even made tomoros lunches yet 😢

MyPatronusIsACat · 22/09/2021 21:13

7pm. Have dinner at 6.15 to 6.30pm usually. 9pm sounds weirdly late, but I guess everyone is different. Even when our 2 kids were little, we were all settled by 7.00-7.30pm-ish.

esloquehay · 22/09/2021 21:14

I don't.
I'm on the go/doing stuff until bedtime.
🤦

Miserablewithweight · 22/09/2021 21:15

Between 8-9 here depending on eldest clubs
3 kids age 1,3&9.

Dinner is between 6-7 (depending how much I under estimate what I need to do Grin) the. Youngest two off up to bath and bed by 7:30

Eldest stays up a bit but is in bed by 8:39 usually unless he has sports then he’s in bed by 9.

DH and I share all the after dinner chores and little ones bed times so usually manage to get it all done by 8:30ish

gooseygoosey12345 · 22/09/2021 21:16

Same, 8:30-9ish. I wish it was earlier but then nothing would be done, the kids would be feral and the house would be a dumping ground!

MrsRobbieHart · 22/09/2021 21:17

7:00 usually but no small DCs here- they’re secondary age so no baths or bedtime and they don’t make a mess at dinner. They’re pretty well trained by now so kitchen gets a quick wipe around, throw a tablet in the dishwasher, fold some laundry and deposit it in their rooms then I’ll sort my work stuff for next day and boil the kettle for a cuppa and sit down for Emmerdale. Grin

Findahouse21 · 22/09/2021 21:17

I aim to have all of the jobs done by 7:45 then all that is left are bedtime stories and shenanigans! But we don't do any week time clubs (aprt from after school for childcare purposes) at the moment because they don't fir it with work, so we tend to be home by 6

SpnBaby1967 · 22/09/2021 21:17

Most days by around 6.30pm.

I get home from work by 5.15pm, straight onto sorting dinner to eat by 6pm and kids do homework. Tidy as I go, hoover whilst its cooking or sort out laundry etc. Kids do dishwasher after dinner so that's when I sit down.

I send kids off to get ready for bed half hour before their bedtime and they take themselves off to bed.

2 evenings a week I have an evening club so that changes, and 2 evenings a week DH has clubs.

I make lunchboxes in the morning whilst the kids are having breakfast & getting dressed for school.

Kids are 9, 10 & 12.

Cheeseplantboots · 22/09/2021 21:18

Around 7pm. Tea at 5/5.30. Load dishwasher and then we usually sit down. I rarely stay sat down though!

Loyalloulou · 22/09/2021 21:18

All 3 kids asleep by 7.30. I am off to bed now.

Itstheprinciple · 22/09/2021 21:19

Don't do hoovering in the week. Rarely put a wash on in the week.

DD is older so self sufficient in showering, homework and after school activity.

Sometimes I clean up straight after we've eaten, other nights I do it later (usually depends what I want to watch on telly so I fit it in around that)

EileenGC · 22/09/2021 21:19

Mon-Wed, around 9pm.
Thu-Sun, around 11.30pm at the earliest, which is when I get home from work. I hate the late bedtimes because work resumes at 9am the next morning so it’s not like I can catch up on sleep or down time the morning after.

ladywithnomanors · 22/09/2021 21:20

About 7pm when I’m not at work. I have a 16, 13 and 11 year olds , so they’re fairly self sufficient though I occasionally check homework and remind them of jobs they need to do. My DH gets home between 6pm - 7pm and by that time I’m done.
There’s always plenty of jobs I could be doing but to be honest I struggle to just get out of bed some days due to a recent bereavement. I really lack motivation.

ineedaholidayandwine · 22/09/2021 21:24

7:40 ish.
Home from pick up around 5:15, Y1 so only reading and spelling for homework, prep and cook dinner (on a wfh day prep might have been done before going for pick up)
She settles down with tv while we load dishwasher/wash any dishes/clean sides and hob.
Up to bed at 7:15, teeth, toilet, story, bed.
Bath Sunday afternoon, quick shower Tue and Thur (other days too if needed, particularly in summer)
No homework on Thursday as it's Rainbows so a bit busier.
More reading and spelling practice at some point on a Saturday and Sunday

MintyGreenDream · 22/09/2021 21:25

6pm

merryhouse · 22/09/2021 21:25

Hm.

Eat at 6. Have a cup of tea. Move wash to dryer? (I'm assuming since it's going away same day it's washed) - takes us to 6.30
Parent 1: make lunches, Parent 2: wrangle youngest's shower - 20 minutes?
Parent A: fold washing out of dryer, Parent B: wrangle middle's shower and supervise youngest's teeth - 20 minutes
Parent X: put washing away, possibly with "help", Parent Y: wrangle oldest's shower and supervise middle's teeth - 20 minutes
7.30 Parent (i): wash up (now showers are finished), Parent (ii): finish getting kids to bed - half an hour - 8pm.

Are you trying to do everything together? Or are you making bedtimes Fun and/or Calm And Loving (ie long-drawn-out with Just One More Story)?

Oblomov21 · 22/09/2021 21:28

Teens, so after dinner @ approx 6pm, stuff goes in the dishwasher and we are all sat down by 6.15pm.

merryhouse · 22/09/2021 21:29

(I haven't actually answered the question because my two are both adults now, and when they were younger I had a dishwasher and no job, and they had showers after swimming at the health club and put themselves to bed from about 5.)

Suzi888 · 22/09/2021 21:34

Around 8pm, sometimes 9pm. There’s still stuff that needs doing, lots of toys around. I can cope with clean mess, not dirty mess. But I’m sat Wine right now. I’ll be up at 6am to deal with the toys!
I’m awake a lot in the night, wish I could get up and tackle chores then but I’d wake everyone up.

MajorNeville · 22/09/2021 21:35

I have just sat down, so about 9:20 tonight. Last night was about the same. Monday is sat down at 7 and it threw my whole night out, I was all discombobulated and didn't understand the time, lol
