To ask what time you sit down for the evening?

Is 9 o'clock unusually late?

No matter how organised I try to be, dh and I rarely sit down before 9pm.

I finish work, do the school run, a bit of housework after school, vac, put a wash on, youngest' spellings, reading books, then make dinner for 6pm when dh gets home 3 evenings we have kids clubs on after school).

By the times we've ate dinner, cleared up, put the washing load away, kids showers, made lunches for the next day. It's 9pm.

I'm sure years ago when I only had one child my evening started at 7.30pm once the baby was asleep.

By 9pm anything that isn't done gets left and I sit. Usually everything is done by then but occasionally (like tonight) I have ironing or something still left and it waits until the next night.

jelly79 · 22/09/2021 21:40

8pm is average (but can give or take 30 minutes)

Macncheeseballs · 22/09/2021 21:50

CLearing up after dinner is most often last job of the night, but then I don't do laundry every day and don't do pack lunches

dunkaccino · 22/09/2021 21:51

Out doing stuff until dark, then in for food and tonight did some work so finished now. In summer often out til 10 every day unless wet, in winter depends on kids evening activities and typically get home at 9.30 3 or 4 nights/week. Only time I've ever done the sitting around and watching tv thing was in the last lockdown when it was dark - we got netflix & amazon prime and started to watch the stuff other people watched in the first lockdown.

Quornflakegirl · 22/09/2021 21:54

Between 8-8:30, we have two 9 year olds.

Asleanna · 22/09/2021 21:57

8-9pm depending how organised I am with dinner.

In your shoes though, I'd put a wash on in the morning so that you can sort that when you get home rather than when kids are in bed!

Macncheeseballs · 22/09/2021 22:00

Can't they have school lunches

IncorrigibleTitmouse · 22/09/2021 22:32

Sounds normal to me. Finish work at 6, home by 7 then by the time I sort dinner, eat and clean up it's easily 9.

notanothertakeaway · 22/09/2021 22:44

@merryhouse

Hm.

Eat at 6. Have a cup of tea. Move wash to dryer? (I'm assuming since it's going away same day it's washed) - takes us to 6.30
Parent 1: make lunches, Parent 2: wrangle youngest's shower - 20 minutes?
Parent A: fold washing out of dryer, Parent B: wrangle middle's shower and supervise youngest's teeth - 20 minutes
Parent X: put washing away, possibly with "help", Parent Y: wrangle oldest's shower and supervise middle's teeth - 20 minutes
7.30 Parent (i): wash up (now showers are finished), Parent (ii): finish getting kids to bed - half an hour - 8pm.

Are you trying to do everything together? Or are you making bedtimes Fun and/or Calm And Loving (ie long-drawn-out with Just One More Story)?

Do you live in a commune? Lots of adults in your house!
Notcontent · 22/09/2021 22:44

Sounds normal!
Teen dd gets home from school at around 5 pm. I get home from work around 6 pm. Do some chores. Make dinner for 8 pm. Eat dinner, clean kitchen. Tidy up, etc. There are never enough hours in the day.

Why are people hoovering everyday
Washing everyday
Cleaning every day
If all seems a touch of the Martyr

Limejuiceandrum · 22/09/2021 22:53

I mean if you get home for 7.30/8 then fair enough

AnUnlikelyCombination · 22/09/2021 22:55

Late primary and teen DC, who have clubs ending at 7.00 some nights. I finish work around 6.00 on a good day, can be much later, so I have to cook, sort dishwasher, tidy, shove a wash on / fold / put away, pick up / take to clubs, deal with urgent texts / emails from school or clubs etc and usually spend 15 mins with each DC to catch up and cuddle. All that takes to about 9.00. Later if I’m physically in the office, and earlier if work isn’t too busy.

HeraInTheHereAndNow · 22/09/2021 23:02

8pm ish.

Though I’m quite often emptying the dishwasher before bed, at 11pm 🙄

Ricepops · 22/09/2021 23:04

9pm is pretty standard here. Home around 5.30pm, make dinner, put laundry in dryer. Upstairs around 7pm to start bath and bedtime. Youngest asleep by 8pm, oldest reads until lights out at 9pm, and during that time DH and I are folding laundry/doing dishes/making packed lunches/final tidy round. Almost always have emails to respond to from school/nursery/afterschool activities/family/other life admin to do which often takes me beyond 9pm. DC are 7 and 4.

Yarqueen · 22/09/2021 23:10

10pm, and I have one 18 month old (who is a night owl like his father - sleeps the morning away). If it were up to me I'd be in bed by 9pm!

MyPatronusIsACat · 22/09/2021 23:13

Exactly this. ^ Fuck that. Hoover once a week here. Washing 3 times a week, cleaning twice a week. If that!
Theoldprospector · 22/09/2021 23:21

How is everyone accomplishing all of this?

Maybe it is because I don’t drink coffee.

I do as little as possible.

ShadowsInTheDarkness · 22/09/2021 23:27

Late, it varies between 8-10pm. We have livestock so after dinner it's in the truck with everyone and out to sort goats for the night and check on the sheep. DCs are sent straight to bed when we get back while we go round and check on all the ducks, poultry etc and shut them all up for the night. DCs are usually in bed for 9pm although I try and get them into bed a bit earlier a few nights a week (8yo and 10yo). Then me and DH sort the dogs out, tidy the kitchen etc and finally sit down for half hour before going to bed. It's nice if we can manage to get done earlier and have time to watch tv. Deepest darkest winter is great as animals can all be sorted straight after school and we are sat down by 7pm. In spring and summer when we have lots of babies it can be really late by the time we are done for the night as there's lots of animals to check on.

Pottedpalm · 22/09/2021 23:59

What’s with all this washing and folding of laundry? Even at peak laundry time with DC in school shirts and DH frequently using two shirts a day as there was a lot of eating out snd commuting involved, I didn’t wash every day. And I ironed on Sunday afternoons.
A lot of people eat very late too. I aimed to have the meal over for me and DTs by 7; leaving DH’s for when he got home if he wasn’t eating out. Would usually sit down around 8, but with a pile of marking.

Snog · 23/09/2021 00:09

Dinner at 6pm, 5 mins to wash up (no dishwasher) and done.

Susannahmoody · 23/09/2021 02:18

No way I'd bother with after school club 3 nights per week. We're usually sat down by 8pm, 2 kids here, both work FT.
