To be worried about ill teen?

LlamaDrama99 · 21/09/2021 14:20

She's been ill for months, bloods were all clear but we're waiting on more blood tests to be done. So far this term she has 50% attendance as she just can't manage it. The extra bloods weren't booked in until late next week but I've I managed to get an appt for this tomorrow now but then we still have to wait yet another week for them to come back.

She's pale, lethargic, loss of appetite, dizzy, she fainted yesterday (GP rang and said it was because she hadn't eaten breakfast, yet she never does). I'm really worried. Drs seem to think it might be stress but she said she's only stressed because she feels unwell and I'm not convinced being stressed would make you pale?

It would be unreasonable to go to a&e wouldn't it? :( I'm so worried.

I would take her straight to A+E. Poor kid.

LlamaDrama99 · 21/09/2021 14:45

Do you think I should? I thought people would say I was wildly unreasonable if I said I wanted too!

My DS14 was like that all last year, missed lots of school, he was eventually diagnosed with PoTS, he's been taking salt tablets and has been a lot better

londonrach · 21/09/2021 14:49

Definitely needs further investigation.. more bloods taken. Phone gp, ask for another gp to see her and ref to pediatrics. Something not right. Just a silly notion here as friend had similar she ever had a tick bite?

SuperStarRose · 21/09/2021 14:49

Nothing wrong with taking her to A&E where they can do further tests. I would actually if only to rule things out. You never know what might show up,

LlamaDrama99 · 21/09/2021 15:03

Not that I know of @londonrach

She hasn't even been physically seen by a GP although saw an advanced nurse practitioner finally last week who did blood pressure, temp and felt tummy.

That’s how my daughter was before she was diagnosed with coeliac disease , unfortunately she then got CFS

WaterAndRichTea · 21/09/2021 15:08

Do you know what blood tests shes had?

WaterAndRichTea · 21/09/2021 15:09

My first thought was Glandular fever
I had it terrible as a teen and was so ill

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 21/09/2021 15:10

I don't think it needs a&e. My DD was horrendously pale at the end of the last school year through stress, anxiety and not eating properly.

pale, lethargic, loss of appetite, dizzy

Those things can get you in to a bit of a catch 22. Again I know this from my teen DD. Doesn't feel like eating as she's anxious/stressed, appetite decreases, no food means no energy and lethargy.

I'd be more concerned about her mental health personally and would be pushing for a face to face appointment

TastyToastie · 21/09/2021 15:11

I think I'd be going back to GP (again) and really stressing how long symptoms have been going on and the effect it's having on her education.

Diagnosis often isn't a magic bullet. You need to be asking them what to do day to day to help her now, alongside seeking a diagnosis. Should she be trying to go to school part time, or taking a complete break for a couple of weeks etc. Should you be treating it like chronic fatigue while awaiting a diagnosis, and what would that involve?

Sewaccidentprone · 21/09/2021 15:13

Ds2 was a like this for a while - turned out to be Vit D deficiency!

So hopefully it’s something as easily diagnosed and sorted as that?

BlueberrySugar · 21/09/2021 15:16

If you feel as her mother she should go to A&E then do it. Straight away you will be seen by a paediatric doctor because of her age. Honestly, my GP is seeing next to no one. I wouldn't even hesitate going to the hospital.

They're usually great down there and wonder why they haven't been seen by a GP!

Hope she feels better soon. Just go x

maddy68 · 21/09/2021 15:20

Sounds like glandular fever to me

Shimmyshimmycocobop · 21/09/2021 15:24

I'm not generally someone who would say go to A&E but in this instance I would listen to your gut and go. 6 months is a long time to be feeling ill and not knowing what is causing it.
Hope you get it sorted soon.

Floralnomad · 21/09/2021 15:25

Unless the blood tests are particularly specialist ie for coeliacs etc they come back same day .

LlamaDrama99 · 21/09/2021 15:33

They just said full bloods so whatever that entails, they all came back normal. They want to test for glandular fever next. GP surgery said they take a week to come back?

OP posts:
WaterAndRichTea · 21/09/2021 15:35

@Floralnomad Not sure where you live but blood tests dont come back the same day

I have blood tests every few months and not once have they come back the same day

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 21/09/2021 15:42

I've had glandular fever, it's nasty! Does she have/has she had swollen glands? I literally had them everywhere and my throat was disgusting and full of so much gunk I couldn't talk. I assumed all cases were the same in which case you would know it was that. I could be wrong though

WaterAndRichTea · 21/09/2021 15:44

Glandular fever as i mentioned earlier can have different symptoms, i didnt have swollen glands or a sore throat

It affected my liver badly both times i had it

Floralnomad · 21/09/2021 16:35

@WaterAndRichTea , normal bloods like FBC and U&E are processed on the same day usually and the results will be on the system , whether your GP takes a week to look at them is the issue , if you have bloods that the GP wants to know the results of they will be there for them to see .

TitoMojito · 21/09/2021 16:39

@Floralnomad

Yes this. I was just like that as a teenager until we discovered it was the gluten that was causing it.
Saladovercrispsanyday · 21/09/2021 16:41

I can’t believe no one has asked about her weight?

Could she be suffering from anorexia?

Saladovercrispsanyday · 21/09/2021 16:42

A and e won’t get you anywhere I suspect

Are you able to go private

WaterAndRichTea · 22/09/2021 02:56

@Floralnomad

Iv had hundreds of blood tests over the tears, and NONE of them are back the same day
