To be worried about ill teen?

LlamaDrama99 · 21/09/2021 14:20

She's been ill for months, bloods were all clear but we're waiting on more blood tests to be done. So far this term she has 50% attendance as she just can't manage it. The extra bloods weren't booked in until late next week but I've I managed to get an appt for this tomorrow now but then we still have to wait yet another week for them to come back.

She's pale, lethargic, loss of appetite, dizzy, she fainted yesterday (GP rang and said it was because she hadn't eaten breakfast, yet she never does). I'm really worried. Drs seem to think it might be stress but she said she's only stressed because she feels unwell and I'm not convinced being stressed would make you pale?

It would be unreasonable to go to a&e wouldn't it? :( I'm so worried.

*Years

IF something bad is flagged then yes the lab will ring the GP or 111 and someone will get in contact with you, but that is exceptional circumstances only

Mosaic123 · 22/09/2021 03:07

DS had Toxoplasmosis. Had been abroad (pre pandemic) so was tested for all sorts of rare tropical diseases. A cat scratched him in South America. He was really ill with it and took months to recover fully.

groovergirl · 22/09/2021 03:41

My first thought was glandular fever too. How are your DD's glands? Can you or she feel behind and under her ears, down the side of her neck and under her arms alongside her breasts (lymph node area)? Any hard little domes or nodules?
Glandular fever is notoriously elusive in blood tests. I had three rounds of tests before mine was picked up.
It would be worth having a stool test, too, as your DD's symptoms could be related to a gut infection or food allergy.

@Saladovercrispsanyday

I can’t believe no one has asked about her weight?

Could she be suffering from anorexia?

Yes, this could be anorexia nervosa disguised as "feeling sick" "not hungry" "stomach ache" etc. etc. What does she eat? (NB: you can have an eating disorder without being obsessed with body weight and shape.)

Sounds like very poor service from your GP. If you can afford to pay would see a paediatrician privately.

DunderMifflinSalesRep · 22/09/2021 09:44

Is Long Covid a possibility?

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 22/09/2021 09:48

Just gone through this with DD. If your gut tells you there's something really not right here, take her to a+e, ring doctors, etc etc ....and keep on at them. I was the biggest pain to my surgery until my DD got diagnosed. You know your child better than they do

cricketmum84 · 22/09/2021 09:51

My 12yo was like this earlier this year. Turned out she had a folate deficiency so is now on supplements.

A&E may not be the right place at the moment but I would be pushing to have her physically seen by a GP. They are seeing people in person if needed. Just really push home how concerned you are.

What was your daughter diagnosed with?
Floralnomad · 22/09/2021 09:57

@WaterAndRichTea and I’ve also had 100s of blood tests and some of mine I’ve spoken to the GP about same day and many are visible on my patient access the following day , perhaps your GP is a bit slow .

RedHelenB · 22/09/2021 10:01

Try to insist she eats something at breakfast.

ElvisPresleyHadABaby · 22/09/2021 10:18

Celiac?

BlueJag · 22/09/2021 10:24

I'll ask for a test to check her vitamin D levels. I was dying. Exhausted, my hair was falling out and I was sick all the time. Worth testing. I'm fine now after 300,000 units.
Best of luck

ofwarren · 22/09/2021 10:25
@Floralnomad

Iv had hundreds of blood tests over the tears, and NONE of them are back the same day
Must depend on where you live because my son and I both have frequent bloods and sometimes they are back within hours.

Generallystruggling · 22/09/2021 10:25

I felt this way with severe anaemia. Take her to A&E, they will run further tests and at least an actual doctor will examine her too. GP’s are a joke atm.

doublemonkey · 22/09/2021 10:28

@LlamaDrama99

They just said full bloods so whatever that entails, they all came back normal. They want to test for glandular fever next. GP surgery said they take a week to come back?
Glandular should have been one of the first tests they did!

Take her to A&E for now and see about getting a new GP.

Calmdown14 · 22/09/2021 10:40

Can you ask for the results? What were her iron levels like?
I suffer from anaemia but sometimes you can be just in the normal range. However if you are sensitive to this and your levels fluctuate, can still feel ill.
I'd be getting supplements with iron and B12 into her to see if it helps.
Keep pushing but start with process of elimination

TartanJumper · 22/09/2021 10:42

@Floralnomad

Unless the blood tests are particularly specialist ie for coeliacs etc they come back same day .
The lab might get the results same day but GP doesn't get them for at least two days here.
FreeBritnee · 22/09/2021 10:45

My first thought was glandular fever.

WyfOfBathe · 22/09/2021 11:01

@MissSmiley

My DS14 was like that all last year, missed lots of school, he was eventually diagnosed with PoTS, he's been taking salt tablets and has been a lot better
I also thought of PoTS.

You can do an active stand test at home in the first place.

Eating disorder.....?

She doesn't need to be underweight.
Why isn't she eating breakfast before school?

Whywonttheyletmeusemyusername · 22/09/2021 11:21

WaterAndRichTea · 22/09/2021 11:43
