Ed Davey was on Marr this morning agreeing that the party had banned a woman from standing as an MP for 10 years for wearing a tshirt with the slogan woman: adult human female. I thought it extreme but if that's the line the party takes well it's in the open.

Just watched Ed now on Politics North say he and the party are all in favour of free speech so Roy Chubby Brown should be allowed to perform. Roy Brown is known for sexist, racist & homophobic blue jokes.

YABU to expect the leader of a political party to hold the same view for a whole 60 minutes.
YANBU On something as important as freedom of speech you don't get to cherry pick.

Ed Davey has been captured by some sort of brain-eating ideology because he's making absolutely no sense at all - as his recent behaviour proves.

What a time to be alive - the definition of woman is banned but politicians are supporting racist, sexist, homophobic (and almost certainly transphobic, ironically) jokes.

The person who voted that the OP is being unreasonable - PLEASE come back and tell us why because I can see no logic in this.

EwwSprouts · 19/09/2021 10:57

Please do. It's in AIBU so open to robust responses!

I don't think they have a choice. Haven't they accepted large donations from a puberty blocker making pharmaceutical company?

It's just open misogyny isn't it. Chubby Brown is a man. Natalie Bird wearing tshirt is a woman and also standing up for the rights of women so doubly worthy of punishment.

How come, in these enlightened times, does Ed Davey feel confident in standing up and declaring "women - know your place?"
Can't just be all the big pharma money.

Not my vote but I'd assumed it was confusion eg I agree with the statement "On something as important as freedom of speech you don't get to cherry pick." so would vote that YANBU to show I agree!
araiwa · 19/09/2021 11:17

Yabu

Supporting free speech and choosing who represents your organisation are two different things.

I doubt he would want Roy chubby brown to stand as an MP for his party either

nzborn · 19/09/2021 11:33

Freedom of speech for men only is l think what he was trying to say.

EwwSprouts · 19/09/2021 11:34

Araiwa I can see what you are saying but why not just not put them on a selection list? A ten year ban for a non-legal matter looks like a sledgehammer.

Indeed.

I'm in my mid forties and for the first time I feel politically homeless and have no idea how I'll vote at the next election.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 19/09/2021 11:41

YABU. He’s supporting broader free speech which is find. He’s not allowing someone to represent his party because of her views which don’t fit with party policy. I don’t actually agree but it’s not inconsistent, it’s a totally different question.

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 19/09/2021 11:43

He's annoyed because an all party parliamentary group agreed to push this through before the public realised, as has been done in several other countries.
I forget now who let it slip but thank goodness women realised that our rights were being sold down the river

Boood · 19/09/2021 11:49

I voted YABU because the logic is very clear. If you are a man, the Liberal Democrats will uphold your right to freedom of speech. If you are a woman, they will not.
If you don’t like this, do what I do and scribble “women don’t have penises” all over every one of the million leaflets they send out, put them in a nice envelope and send them back to LD head office without a stamp.

EwwSprouts · 19/09/2021 18:09

Boood Grin
I've never been a member of a political party so don't get leaflets. We don't even seem to get literature around election time.

EwwSprouts · 19/09/2021 18:13

I think the 10 year ban will came back to bite him though as people will remember it when other party members are disciplined. Not going to be a good look if males get more lenient consequences.

@LloydColesCommotions ( great name 😊)

"I'm in my mid forties and for the first time I feel politically homeless and have no idea how I'll vote at the next election."
Me too and I'm older. I've emailed Ed davey to tell him why women won't be voting for his party, but who can we vote for now??

CreepingDeath · 19/09/2021 18:20

@WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld

I don't think they have a choice. Haven't they accepted large donations from a puberty blocker making pharmaceutical company?
Yes, Ferring Pharmaceuticals have donated about £1.4 million to the Lib Dems over the last few years.

They make a drug called Triptorelin, which is normally used to treat prostate cancer in men, but is also being used as a puberty blocker in young girls. I'm guessing this is why Ed Davey suddenly no longer remembers what a woman is.

As always, follow the money.

MrsRobinsonsHandprints · 19/09/2021 18:21

I voted yabu, because I don't think anyone can expect the Politicians in the UK to hold a belief for six let alone sixty minutes. A pre requisite of UK politics appears to be the ability to flip flop more than a beached halibut .

BrightYellowDaffodil · 19/09/2021 18:22

I'm hoping that Shahrar Ali wins the leadership of the Green Party.

When it comes to voting and elections, if you don't respect my sex you don't get my X.

Coz nothing else matters as much to you lot.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 19/09/2021 18:30

Coz nothing else matters as much to you lot.

Funnily enough, we (and by the way, we're not a homogeous group) can care about more than one thing at once. But I should imagine that if, say, you were a woman locked up in a cell with a male-bodied person, or you were in a refuge having suffered the trauma of domestic abuse and you found male-bodied people living with you which added to your trauma, I'd guess you'd probably find it mattered to you.

Pieceofpurplesky · 19/09/2021 18:30

He just wouldn't answer the question as to what an adult female was. I am not as involved as some of you in here are - but that really annoyed me

MorganKitten · 19/09/2021 18:36

After several conversations with Ed Davey he isn’t that bad of a guy - I had to deal with him about care homes, and also see him at the school gates.
