Cross stitch and other hobbies

After hearing that crafting such as knitting and sewing have increased in demand due to the various lockdowns

Did any one start a new hobby or pick up an old one

I love to cross stitch and knit. In the lockdowns I took on my first big project. I took me 6 months and was so worth it to break the bordem

I was already crafting before lockdowns.

First lockdown came and I spent over £100 in yarn 🙈

Guitar/ukelele using the Ultimate Guitar avd Fenderapps. I've found it so nice to use a completely different part of my brain

Let's see your big project OP

Pre COVID I absolutely loved cross stitch, doing jigsaws and playing on my Nintendo switch. Post lockdowns I can’t bear to look at, or think about any of those things. So I’ve lost hobbies rather than gained them. I hope the urge to sew comes back soon, I’ve a cupboard full of projects that need finishing.

I could already knit, cross stitch and sew basic children's clothes. I took up crochet and drawing during lockdown, drawing lasted a few weeks, but am still doing crochet.

Started soap making as a new hobby. Love knitting and have a hoard of wool, I also cross stitch , in fact any thing crafty.

Spidey66 · 17/09/2021 21:32

I love adult colouring books. I started when I had a hysterectomy about 6 years back, it increased during lockdown. I also do diamond painting, which is kind of a cross between colour by numbers and cross stitch using small beads.

I was in a bike accident yesterday and unfortunately have broken my right arm, so I'm off sick but can't do any crafty things as it's my dominant hand affected. I'm gutted as I'm going to be off sick.

DappledThings · 17/09/2021 21:34

I did my first cross stitch in about 30 years. Took me months and I was really pleased with it. Also learnt crochet from YouTube. These are the start of my 3rd blanket.

Took up crochet for the first time during the first lockdown. I've since made 7 bedspreads, several bags, a few baby blankets and some winter bobble hats.

I'm really enjoying it. Spending a fortune on yarn though! I think this will be a hobby for a lifetime. I already do cross stitch, paper crafting/die cutting, have dabbled in decoupage, and jewellery making and sewing.
Have added pics of last bag and blanket completed. Working on another blanket for a Christmas present just now.

That's a great piece. Here's my big cross stitch. I treated it to a proper frame after I took the picture. I felt it deserved it!

@RVN123 I love that blanket. Does it fit a double bed? How many squares did that take?

CrazyBaubles · 17/09/2021 21:47

I've been a crocheter for a long time and had been dabbling in cross stitch. Lock down allowed me to work on my biggest project (although lockdown was over by the time I finished it)!

You guys are very talented!

RVN123 · 17/09/2021 21:50

It fits a double bed with loads of overhang on each side. It was 16 squares high by 12 squares across so 192 squares, then stitched together as I completed every row to save the gigantic task of sewing together all at the end (been there, done that!).
I can knock out 15 squares in a day if I'm organised enough. It's a sunburst pattern and the tutorial is on YouTube. I just use three colours (purple, teal and mint) and vary the order, and then the cream border, and finished it off with a scalloped ruffled edge.
The recipient was delighted with it and I was so glad.

upinaballoon · 17/09/2021 21:58

I have several unfinished pieces of sewing and when proper big first lockdown came I finished some of those off. I quite liked the aspect of lockdown which pinned me down at home and it meant I got a bit of furniture painting done too. I work slowly compared with many people but isn't it lovely to have a needle in your fingers, even if you're slow.

DappledThings · 17/09/2021 22:01

Yikes, 192! I think the most important can do of an evening is 4 but I've been tempted recently to take a day of annual leave when DC are at school/nursery to catch up! Just finishing up 48 squares for a smaller one for DD. Also a sunburst pattern but each one has an extra edge so the squares are bigger.

Feedback from the 3 year old so far is mostly complaining there isn't enough pink! It's as pink as I can handle.

I’ve done cross stitch since I was 7 years old my grandma brought her self a magazine but I don’t think she got hang of it so she got me started on the freebie it was mother day card with brunches of flowers in an oval in the middle it said for mum. Took it to the wool shop at the time the lady who ran it at the time couldn’t believe I did it as she said it was hard one for a beginner. Roll on to the pandemic cross stitch it has been my life line. But at the beginning I was trying to learn crochet but I’m to find a beginner pattern in English wording. Just recently I’ve started hand embroidery

user1471478181 · 17/09/2021 22:10

Oh also patch work by hand. My neighbor as just given up due to her hands and she is struggling to do it. She had a started a project before first lockdown it was for me to try and do it or charity shop
