To hate buying second hand

I rarely buy second hand as all it is is bad experiences, I have just bought a second hand push chair for my daughter, had it a week and it’s already broke! No come back as obviously I have no rights, I get why people buy second hand but I’ve mainly only had bad experiences now I will have to pay out to buy a brand new one 🙄 which I should have just done and saved myself £30!

YANBU do what you want.

I think if you've had a series of bad experiences though the problem is with your selection skills rather than the concept of stuff being re-used.

And you can take second hand stuff back if it breaks straight away. Where did you get it from?

Nothing to do with “selection skills” I looked ages for this one and there was nothing to suggest it was broke, my point is you have no rights afterwards, it wasn’t broke (I don’t think) when I bought it

If you've had problems before why take the chance with a pushchair?

Not in a sarcy way just genuinely curious.

Also what is broke about it? Lots of brands of pushchairs sell spares.

But people buy second stuff all the time and it doesn't break straight away so if this happens to you a lot then I think the problem must be with what you're buying.

And you do have some rights when you buy second hand.

The only 2nd hand thing I would buy is a car.

I only buy certain things second hand, and I prefer local cash on collection items because then you can see it and decide not to hand over the money if it isn't as described. I would never buy electricals second hand though. I have had pretty much always had positive experiences with second hand buying in general, don't know if I have just been lucky.

Because I don’t usually buy second hand but when I have it always been a problem but I assumed maybe I had just been unlucky No it’s not something that can be repaired it collapsed when she was in it. Maybe I’ve just been unlucky then but I will never buy second hand again!

I don't mind second hand usually but I've had a few baby things that have only lasted one child. We've ended up having to buy again for the second, and with hindsight we'd have been better to buy new in the first place. But then we've had some bargains too, and some nice "paying it forward" interactions.

I dislike buying second hand, but love freecycle etc. Definitely something psychological there. Maybe a lack of trust in sellers?

I think its the aggro of finding what you want via ebay / sales sites etc, then haggling or bidding for it. Often people want a lot for second hand stuff too, and are overly positive about the condition. With new you can often find a deal, get it quickly, and if there are any issues you can get a refund.

I tend to buy new and keep things until they die because of this. I do look after stuff though.

I am very picky about what I buy second hand and only buy second hand items from people I work with (we have a big trading board at work). I also don't go into it expecting brand new quality. So if something breaks/is ruined I don't mind so much.

Unfortunately, some sellers act like items are brand new despite clearly being ancient and decrepit and want more money than they're worth. And some buyers expect new quality from second hand items.

I have only today bought a second hand sofa. Fully expected it to be rubbish and just a stop gap until kids and dog are a little older. I was concerned over paying 2k ish for a sofa that could potentially get ruined. The second hand sofa is amazing. Immaculate condition and the brand and the spec means it would've been thousands new. Cost us less than 200 quid. I don't buy much second hand but I'm now on marketplace looking for what else I can buy!

There's very few things that I'd buy new. I much prefer second hand, and honestly I can't think of anything that's ever been a disappointment/broken - I'm not saying it's definitely never happened, but nothing is coming to mind right now.

I point-blank refuse to buy any new clothes except underwear and tights, socks etc. I spend so little and I always seek out very well-made stuff that lasts years and years. I've been doing this since I was 14 and first volunteered in a charity shop and realised the treasures they had. They don't make clothes like they used to, I swear! And all my furniture is always second hand - but then I must admit I adore antique furniture, which is not always cheap 🤣 but it's certainly very easy to come by decent cheap furniture on the likes on fb marketplace.

My absolute favourite has to be jewellery though - second hand jewellery gets you so much more for your money. And I think second hand fine jewellery looks nicer too, especially when compared to stuff from the main high street chain jewellers who buy in mass produced factory stuff dirt cheap and whack a huge mark-up on it. If you must buy new jewellery, please go to a decent jeweller!!

The only things I tend to buy new are big ticket electrical items, and I'm about to buy a new car seat for my baby due in a few months. Everything else for the baby has been second hand!

So I will say YABU (in the nicest way possible lol) purely as if you give it more of a chance you will be able to save yourself some cash! And of course it's better for the environment too

I love buying second hand. It's very rarely not worked out. Everything from musical instrumental to clothes.

I can easily afford to buy brand new but prefer to do my bit to stop things ending up in landfill and I've saved tonnes and it feels better. I just don't understand why people want to buy everything new

Are you including charity shops in this? I love them! Most of the large items - especially electricals-have a 6 month guarantee.
Bought all my bedroom furniture, all my lamps, toaster, bookcase, most of my clothes are from them ( many brand new donated directly from the shop ) fish tank stand, coffee table, TV stand, office desk and chairs...and I don't shop there because I need to, I just love rummaging in them and getting a bargain! 🤗

From my last comment you'll be able to see I'm a big second hand advocate, but this comment has reminded me of something I've noticed on fb marketplace recently.

There's still loads of bargains to be found, but recently I've been seeing people selling cheap furniture for not much less than the cost would be for a new one - for example one I saw yesterday, an old Argos chest of drawers on fb for £50. You can get a new one from Argos themselves for £60!! I can't see why anyone wouldn't just pay the extra tenner to have the assurances and recourse that buying new brings.

I totally get wanting/needing to make some extra cash from their belongings, but let's be reasonable please

No I haven’t bought from a charity shop I just mean individual sellers but definitely be avoiding it now it’s worth paying the extra for the protection!

Facebook marketplace is lethal to me. I've had some dodgy purchases for sure, but also so absolute bargains. My daughter had some Dr Martens (were actually brand new, never worn outside the house) for £60 the other day. They would have cost her £140 'new'.
I've more recently said that I'm giving up buying new stuff because we seem to have no luck with them! Brand new G Plan suite, which was not cheap, is absolutely crap. So much so that we dismantled the £50 second hand 50 year old g plan suite we had before and have kept it up the loft for when we get rid of this one.

We bought a new tumble drier after years of buying second hand ones. We thought we'd treat ourselves and splash out a bit. Two months out of warranty and it gave up the ghost. So we're back on the second hand ones again.

Considering the prices for the items I own, I'd be paying a lot more especially if they were brought new.

Books are my favourite second hand purchase... we get through a lot to the point I am considering setting up as an amazon reseller to get rid of them again instead of relying on ebay!

I collect magic the gathering cards and warhammer 40,000 figures, and to buy them at full retail prices, would be a small fortune cost wise.
