To hate buying second hand

PumpkinKlNG · 17/09/2021 16:19

I rarely buy second hand as all it is is bad experiences, I have just bought a second hand push chair for my daughter, had it a week and it’s already broke! No come back as obviously I have no rights, I get why people buy second hand but I’ve mainly only had bad experiences now I will have to pay out to buy a brand new one 🙄 which I should have just done and saved myself £30!

It's your choice, but personally I've had far more good experiences with second hand styling, than bad. The amount of money I've saved over the years more than make up for the occasional dud.

I would suggest shopping in charity shops. So secondhand bargains but more likely to be tested to check they're in good order. Also you could go back and get a refund if you wanted (although I probably would feel a bit iffy about asking money back from a charity)

My best second hand purchases were from the shop at the dump! Cosy coupe car for £5 - looked brand new after a good

HungryHippo11 · 18/09/2021 05:45

A good scrub...

RazorSharp · 18/09/2021 05:52

You've obviously made your mind up OP, but the item was less than half price of a new one, so don't understand you saying it was not much cheaper?

HungryHippo11 · 18/09/2021 05:59

@PumpkinKlNG

I would rather not take the chance that one item might be good at the rest a load of rubbish as you aren’t really saving much then are you 🤷‍♀️ Paying out twice
In my experience it has been the opposite. 95% good stuff and the occasional load of rubbish, so well worth it.
KilledByWitches · 18/09/2021 06:21

Agree with a comment above, you need to use your judgement.

I wouldn't but a second hand mobile phone after a guy tried to con me a few years ago by reporting the handset I'd bought from him six months before as stolen and getting it blocked. That didn't work well for him thankfully.
Things that are easily faked like designer clothing, watches and bags I avoid too. That said, bought three lovely coach handbags from marketplace a few years ago for £35, had them authenticated and all were genuine so that was one hell of a find!

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 18/09/2021 09:09

If its only a week you've had it OP, Id approach the seller... Obvs you have no legal protection... But on moral ground you do... If I'd sold something second hand I'd expect it to last more than a week.

Pushchairs may well have aging metal

FateHasRedesignedMost · 18/09/2021 10:19

There are certain things I’d never buy secondhand, like prams, mattresses, baby carriers, bouncers, car seats; the risk of it being faulty/damaged and unsafe doesn’t seem worth it, also they’re so hard to clean. They could be a serious risk to child if there’s damage you can’t see, eg buggy breaks with baby in it.

If it broke after you’d been using it I’m not sure you can claim a refund as seller could claim you’d been rough with it or folded it incorrectly?

I buy secondhand clothes and rarely have a problem as any stains/holes/wear and tear have to be declared so it’s easy to avoid items in poor condition. Same with toys like Lego, easy to sterilise and any damage shows up.

I wouldn’t write off all secondhand on the basis of one bad experience.

PumpkinKlNG · 18/09/2021 10:27

I wasn’t folding it, I was pushing it with my daughter in and it folded with her in it, the handle just went! Bought a new one now anyway brand new 😣 which I will always do now not worth the risk

I deal in antiques and vintage. The only "new" things in my house are the techno and the appliances. You immediately lose a large portion of the cost of new through paying VAT. I would not have "new" furniture if you paid me to take it.

user1487194234 · 18/09/2021 11:47

Have to be honest,I don't like buying second hand
I don't have time to trail through charity shops, give me a couple of hours in John Lewis any day
I am very much a buy a few ,expensive clothes, add a few things every season

DdraigGoch · 18/09/2021 12:16
@MrsGhastlyCrumb so true!

Also, I feel like we've lost the culture of fixing things. So many people throw their clothes away due to rips/tears that could be easily fixed, and wouldn't buy second hand furniture that just needs a few fixes here and there. Luckily my nan taught me how to look after clothes and my FIL is a dab-hand with furniture restoration so I'm in luck there.

But you're absolutely right that the manufacturing is just not up to scratch - they're almost designed to break quickly so we have to buy more!
It's called 'planned obsolescence'. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence

Some cars in the 1970s were notorious for rust. The manufacturers would design in pockets where water would collect, the bodywork would rust and you had to replace the car.

onlychildhamster · 18/09/2021 12:23

I wish I could buy more second hand but I find it hard to get the things I want.
I mainly buy some clothes second hand. I like joules and Boden and I find it much easier to find cheaper stuff in the sale section than charity shops or eBay.

I buy e books to save on storage and to save my back from lugging books around. You need a car for second hand furniture and I don't have one..

KingsleyShacklebolt · 18/09/2021 12:24

Massive second hand fans here and I don't think we've ever had a disaster. Tend not to buy second hand electricals but lots of furniture, books, clothing, jewellery, fabric, craft stuff...

Agree that giving things a thorough once over before handing over money is the way to go.

EmeraldShamrock · 18/09/2021 12:32

In this case OP you got ripped off.
There are lots of bargains second hand, unfortunately the seller you dealt with was a chancer.

lochmaree · 18/09/2021 12:49

we buy a lot 2nd hand. I mostly use marketplace and my husband mostly uses ebay. we get pretty much everything for our toddler second hand, only mattress, shoes and car seats were new. we got a silver Cross offroad pram with carry cot and upright seat for about £160, it was over £1000 new and had barely been used. most of his clothes and toys from marketplace. all of our white goods and most of our furniture are second hand too. we can afford to buy new but for cost and environmental reasons would rather buy second hand, we also love finding bargains 😂 i can only think of 2 negative experiences out of 100s so I think thats OK. one was a pushchair that didn't work properly, was only £10 so I gave it away to someone else who wanted it. another was a bag of baby clothes that smelt horrendously of smoke. washed them and cut them up for bike and car rags though, cheaper than actual bike or car cloths. 😂

YABU

people that constantly buy new stuff are killing the planet, there's plenty of good second hand stuff out there, you just have to look for it, stop being so snobby

PumpkinKlNG · 18/09/2021 13:15

Snobby 😂😂😂 the pushchair I bought broke in one week! Never again!

It is unfortunate just be sure to keep it in good condition for resale, you'll give back to the universe as a seller. Wink

CatTerrier · 18/09/2021 13:49

I love second hand and antique.

Thesearmsofmine · 18/09/2021 13:55

I do buy a fair bit second hand but people really have skewed expectations. Some buyers expect everything to be as new, some sellers think they can sell dirty grotty crap. It’s hit and miss.

I got an amazing bed on Facebook marketplace, solid wood M&S mid sleeper for a steal and it was lovely although I had to resell as it was too big(my fault, I didn’t realise the walls were wonky). Then I bought another bed which was from John Lewis and had been in someones spare room and was like new for £20 which has been perfect.

I am a charity shop regular and our local ones are great for books, games and puzzles but the clothes are awful.

I have sold a few bits on as the dc have grown out of them but mostly I give them away or to the baby bank.

notacooldad · 18/09/2021 14:06

So you have had a bad experience with one second hand item therefore you will never buy 2nd hand again.
Yeah, that makes sense.
( sarcastic)

PumpkinKlNG · 18/09/2021 14:09

I’ve already said If you read my op properly that this ISNT the first time. I won’t be reselling I don’t re sell things.

JasonMomoasgirlfriend · 18/09/2021 14:15

Can't the handle be fixed? 🤔

CantChatNow · 18/09/2021 14:16

Someone has to buy new for there to be stuff to buy second hand!

Then you need to be more discerning about what you buy.
