To be this excited for winter?

Whimsicalwillows · 15/09/2021 10:02

Lately i have been getting quiet tingles of reckless excitement that the dark cosy nights are on tne way....
I am itching to have fun with the dc on halloween, baking spooky treats, making enchanted creations, carving pumpkins and sticking some orange lights up just for us! I'm even more excited at the thought of decorating the house with Christmas sparkles and wrapping presents with ribbon, buying in festive foods, crisp winter walks and drinking copious amounts of marshmallow cream topped hot choc (sod it i might even buy the silk hot chocolate maker I've wanted for ages!) i want to do it all properly this year and include all the little sweet traditions like baking gingerbread men, hanging little chocolates on the tree and matching family pjs! I want it to ne straight out of a true movie! I am already waiting for the Christmas slots to open so i can order some indulgent festive foods. I feel i want to go a little out my comfort zone and try some new things like baked camembert with fancy bits to dip in (no idea why i haven't had this before!)

My excitement is beginning to overwhlem me so i have had to vent! Anybody else feeling wonderfully impatient or AIBU? Blush

I get like this every September! It's such a lovely time of year, everything changing outside. I love it all until approx January 1st, then I'm ready for summer to return!

Peteycat · 15/09/2021 10:07

I have already made chrtmas cakes and pears in red wine oh and gooseberry chutney! I think it's a very natural thing to start to prepare for winter. We've been doing it since time began so I definitely think it's a natural feeling.

Whimsicalwillows · 15/09/2021 10:14

@Peteycat oo that chutney sounds gorgeous and I'm pleased I'm not the only one. My excitement is intenser than normal this year, I'm half way through my Christmas shopping and can forsee being finished by October. Some orange leaves falling early a couple of weeks ago made me smile.

Wow you are so organised! My excitement is growing!! I love blackberry picking and crunchy leaves in the floor! Going to try and get some more lights up for the dark nights in my garden!

Yes I made the chutney as usually the magpies nick them, but this year I plucked them early! Haha birds, make do with the food I give you.

SturminsterNewton · 15/09/2021 10:23

I got my Delia Smith "Christmas" recipe book out last night, deciding which Christmas cake to make this year.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 15/09/2021 10:24

Yes, but on the other hand, I'm finding it difficult to resist the Christmas food in the supermarket. I'll try very hard until December 1st.

Purplesparkle34 · 15/09/2021 10:25

I’m the same! I love this time of year!

Jerseygirl12 · 15/09/2021 10:26

Me too, I love choosing new candles and although I ban myself looking at anything Christmassy in the shops until November I may have had a sneaky little look at the Christmas bits in B&M the other day!

Livia22 · 15/09/2021 10:26

It’s absolutely wonderful. The heat this summer was oppressive and I am delighted those days have gone (not to mention the hay fever)!

LindaEllen · 15/09/2021 10:28

I get like this at this time of year too ... but then when it comes, I'm miserable, because it's cold, I forget how crap the heating in this house is, and I get SAD.

peaceanddove · 15/09/2021 10:45

Me too! Between now and Christmas is my very favourite time of year. I really dislike warm, humid weather and bright sunshine.

I've just treated myself to the Autumn candle by Melt which smells divine and looking forward to lighting it tonight. I've also just booked a long weekend in Cumbria for DH and me at the start of November at a really gorgeous B&B, very cosy.

I've been very tempted by the beautiful beech leaves door wreaths I've seen on Etsy and some handmade pumpkins made from bright orange, Harris Tweed Smile

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 15/09/2021 10:47

You are not unreasonable at all. It’s a lovely time of year. Always been my favourite. I can feel your excitement and I feel so happy for you. Do all those lovely things and have some wonderful memories to look back on in years to come.

PartyPotato · 15/09/2021 10:47

Same here 😁 I hate being hot, cannot wait for chilly days and dark nights! I’m itching to get into a coat and scarf!

INeed2P · 15/09/2021 10:52

Me too!!! I adore this time of year, I can feel the chill in the air already Grin

I currently may have one or two Christmas bits out in the house....I love Christmas, it's just the best feeling in the world. Matching pjs and backing cookies in fuzzy socks, then watching a Christmas film with a hot chocolate is my idea of heaven. You've made me all excited OP!!

Sunshineandflipflops · 15/09/2021 10:57

No, I love summer and light nights and mornings. I actually think I suffer with a bit of SAD at this time of year when the nights start drawing in and it's dark when I get up and finish work.

I love to run and outdoor swim and struggle to do either in the autumn/winter as I wont run in the dark alone and can't swim outdoors as it's too dark and cold.

I used to love Christmas but as my marriage ended unexpectedly just after Xmas 4 years ago and my wedding anniversary was just before Xmas it doesn't hold such happy memories now.

I struggle to share other people's love for this time of year for these reasons and wish it could be summer (or our version of) all year.

crochetmonkey74 · 15/09/2021 11:11

I'm a natural autumn and winter person and trying to capture that fizzy joy but have had a terrible year with 4 major bereavements- now living alone for first time in ages and trying to create that cosiness for myself but I am not sure how to!

Sulusu · 15/09/2021 11:20

I love it, September and May are always my favourite months.

But the other side of that is that I get very down in January/February.

romany4 · 15/09/2021 11:27

You are my person and I love you!

I feel exactly the same

BobsBurgersisthebest · 15/09/2021 11:30

Yes! You are my sort of my person Grin I am looking forward to wrapping presents while watching Christmas films, while kids are at school. 🎅

Whimsicalwillows · 15/09/2021 11:36

Thank you all for making me feel better about my crazy excitement this year, I have definitely found my tribe!

@Peteycat I try to be with little ones to think of but secretly I have enjoyed making a start as it means it is getting closer! You have inspired me with your berry picking as that would be something great to do also, and I have been eying up more outdoor lights too (specifically a outdoor lit tree ornamental thingy) Ungrateful birds; I sense they are becoming spoiled!

@SturminsterNewton Delhi’s always got some fabulous recipes, hope you manage to decide.

@TheLovelinessOfDemons so difficult not to get tempted, I have been healthy eating ready for December. It is tough but just think we will enjoy the foods so much more this way!

@Purplesparkle34 @Jerseygirl12
Pleased it isn’t just me! B & m is fantastic as well for glints of inspiration, got some personalised Santa sacks from there last year which reminds me will they have the stockings in this year?!

@Livia22 bring on the cold days, ready to get wrapped up!

@LindaEllen @Sunshineandflipflops

So sorry you both. have SAD, that must be tough, I’ve heard something called a light box helps; you’ve probably tried it maybe. I hope this year is kinder to you @peaceanddovehoping things will be as bearable as possible for you.

@peaceanddove ooo I’m jealous of your b&b stay, that’s sounds so cosy and romantic. I def want an autumnal wreath too, why should we have to wait until Christmas to decorate?!

@LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood thank you so much for your lovely words; what a nice thing to say. Hope you have a fantastic time; I want to breath it all in this year.

@PartyPotato yes I’m dying to get out my winter coat, keep thinking is it chilly enough then diverting back to my light jacket! I will know winter is officially here when that comes out and it shall be very exciting!

@INeed2P good for you having some Christmas bits out, I love that! Oh I forgot about the fluffy socks, I actually need new ones so will be on the look out! Yes Christmas movies and Christmas music and nice snacks while wrapping up!

rhowton · 15/09/2021 11:42

Winter is my favourite season by far. I can't wait for cold days with bright sunshine.

Whimsicalwillows · 15/09/2021 11:47

@crochetmonkey74 I am so very sorry for your loss; utterly devastating. I think you have made an incredible start already because you are trying to make it cosy this year for yourself, you sound really strong. You deserve a lovely, warm indulgent Christmas and it is the small things that count like getting cosy and watching a good film, treating yourself to a nice dinner/little treats, bubble bath and taking care of yourself first and foremost.

@Sulusu let’s hope we have all had such an amazing Christmas that January doesn’t bother us, it shall speed by and not be long and boring like normal!

@romany4 I love you too! I have found my people! Dh has been shifty eyeballing me when I’ve been talking about Christmas lights and I think he just doesn’t understand!

@BobsBurgersisthebest
Yes while dc1 at school and toddler naps I will be in my element, music on and gift wrapping until my hearts content! An excuse for a couple of chocs too I think.

This is lovely! I love autumn too.

theworldsbiggestcrocodile · 15/09/2021 11:59

I'm so excited by autumn every year that I trim the house up a bit! Will add more and more Halloween bits until then, then bring it all down to prep for Christmas! Love it!!

To be this excited for winter?
SoloISland · 15/09/2021 12:19

Love winter, but live it very quietly. When I lived in tourist areas it was just such a relief.

Love the dark mornings.. and needing the solid fuel stove... Love needing to wear socks and jumpers... Make soup..

Christmas for me is very quiet and holy. Advent candles are the start. Advent wreath. Each week another so the Light grows.

And I put up decorations outside.. A great white star trailing tinsel... everything is very symbolic and meaningful .

Love the seasonal food that is available, and yes. miss the supermarkets at this season. I can do a lot of damage online in my small way.. lol

The kind manager at the supermarket makes sure I get at least part of a turkey as the ferries do not fit in with the fresh ones they have and the weather could stymie them anyway. Has to be turkey...

Not much goes on out here and I love that too. I give a few small hand made gifts - and the Gaeltacht community folk gives us old ones a wonderful hamper. Last year all I could see was a pair of legs and a box coming up the drive...

If it is fine I will watch Christmas Day dawn at the shore.. and remember my long gone family with gratitude.

And give heartfelt thanks to God for Jesus and for
life.

This is my chosen joyful way of Christmas.
