To be this excited for winter?

Whimsicalwillows · 15/09/2021 10:02

Lately i have been getting quiet tingles of reckless excitement that the dark cosy nights are on tne way....
I am itching to have fun with the dc on halloween, baking spooky treats, making enchanted creations, carving pumpkins and sticking some orange lights up just for us! I'm even more excited at the thought of decorating the house with Christmas sparkles and wrapping presents with ribbon, buying in festive foods, crisp winter walks and drinking copious amounts of marshmallow cream topped hot choc (sod it i might even buy the silk hot chocolate maker I've wanted for ages!) i want to do it all properly this year and include all the little sweet traditions like baking gingerbread men, hanging little chocolates on the tree and matching family pjs! I want it to ne straight out of a true movie! I am already waiting for the Christmas slots to open so i can order some indulgent festive foods. I feel i want to go a little out my comfort zone and try some new things like baked camembert with fancy bits to dip in (no idea why i haven't had this before!)

My excitement is beginning to overwhlem me so i have had to vent! Anybody else feeling wonderfully impatient or AIBU? Blush

Hate it. I am still wanting a proper summer!

Just more wet and grey weather to look forward to.
I do not recognise these magical autumn and winter months MNers describe. It's grey, with a few colourful leaves on the floor for a while.

'Snuggling' is all well and good, but not something most people can spend the majority of the winter doing.

Pedalpushers · 15/09/2021 15:38

Ugh, I loathe everything about winter, including the utterly overrated holiday that is Christmas.

Well you do not have to join in the holiday. I don't;. just the real Christmas... , Although it IS easier for me as I do not go bear shops etc and no other extras. Do something YOU enjoy?

Yeah, not too sure my children would be best pleased with that.

Ahh me too OP. The Quality Street are calling ❤

I love autumn and winter, so bring it on! I love when all the fairweather dog walkers disappear and it's just me, DD and DDog trussed up like eskimos in the woodlands Grin I love Christmas, I love it being dark outside early, I much prefer it being cold outside than hot, I love it when it snows, I love stodgy winter food, and I love not feeling like I have to go out cos it's warm and sunny even when I cannot be arsed. And I love not being boiling in bed and being able to get under thick covers and not be cooked alive.

I'd probably feel worse about it if I worked 9-5 but I'm self employed and look after DD during the day, so I work in the evenings. It being dark early on gives me less FOMO!

Rummikubfan · 15/09/2021 16:12

In a word NO.

dark by 3.30pm, relentless damp wet grey weather. Just no

MrsMiddleMother · 15/09/2021 16:15

Autumn and winter are definitely my favourite seasons, I just want to snuggle and watch spooky or Christmas films.. Just need the weather to get on board!

Abracadabra12345 · 15/09/2021 16:17

@SoloISland

Love winter, but live it very quietly. When I lived in tourist areas it was just such a relief.

Love the dark mornings.. and needing the solid fuel stove... Love needing to wear socks and jumpers... Make soup..

Christmas for me is very quiet and holy. Advent candles are the start. Advent wreath. Each week another so the Light grows.

And I put up decorations outside.. A great white star trailing tinsel... everything is very symbolic and meaningful .

Love the seasonal food that is available, and yes. miss the supermarkets at this season. I can do a lot of damage online in my small way.. lol

The kind manager at the supermarket makes sure I get at least part of a turkey as the ferries do not fit in with the fresh ones they have and the weather could stymie them anyway. Has to be turkey...

Not much goes on out here and I love that too. I give a few small hand made gifts - and the Gaeltacht community folk gives us old ones a wonderful hamper. Last year all I could see was a pair of legs and a box coming up the drive...

If it is fine I will watch Christmas Day dawn at the shore.. and remember my long gone family with gratitude.

And give heartfelt thanks to God for Jesus and for
life.

This is my chosen joyful way of Christmas.

This is beautiful. I’m really hoping we can have proper Christmas carol services this year

I am utterly relieved that autumn is here although it’s hot today!😬 I long and yearn for frosty winter days and feel sad that it’s more likely to be muddy and mild.

However there’s flamboyant autumn and shorter days and longer nights so there’s that compensation

Droite · 15/09/2021 16:17

Nope. Not excited for darkness at 4 pm, cold, damp, misty, wet, and all the rest of it. Not excited about Christmas shopping, wrapping, cooking etc. Knock me out till Spring.

furbabymama87 · 15/09/2021 16:20

It's my favourite time of year. I hate being hot so I look forward to summer being over. I love feeling all cosy and spooky round Halloween, you get to wear better clothes and boots and there's still Christmas to look forward to. I feel like this summer has lasted too long and I'm ready for it to be over.

Please can I come?![/quote]
@Peteycat if you can get to Norfolk, we'll put extra in the flasks just for you.

I am hoping that our usual carolling goes ahead. It couldn't last year for obvious reasons. The local farmer covers a trailer with lights and pulls us round the village and we sing to everybody. Then back to the farmhouse where his wife has made soups, baked bread and cheese straws and sausage rolls and mince pies and we all sit and chat in front of their big fire, usually with an elderly lab across our feet and the farm cats curled up on an available lap. I've missed our community and I'm hoping that we can reunite in my favourite season.

Ilovecaviar · 15/09/2021 16:49

Great thread. I think it makes the world of difference to think positively about autumn and winter. I find that I love it until Jan and then I need a holiday!

Does anyone have any autumnal reading? I’m going to fish out my Nigel Slaters Christmas but I would love an equivalent one for autumn…..

YellowandGreenToBeSeen · 15/09/2021 18:18

I’m enjoying the slight shift in the air as autumn approaches. There’s a crispness which is lovely - especially as we’ve got some September sun.

I like Bonfire night too.

But I hate hot chocolate and find Christmas something to be endured. I LOVE 1st January when it’s all over. I LOVE it!

But I hate the rest of January and February. The only thing that gets me through is planting loads of bulbs in October / November and watching them start to poke through the earth.

SoupDragon · 15/09/2021 18:21

YABU. It's a miserable time.

"crisp winter walks" is particularly miserable as they are more usually soggy and muddy

Peteycat · 15/09/2021 18:27

@ShowOfHands

Sounds like a heavenly time! I really hope you enjoy yourself.

Leibham · 15/09/2021 18:30

This put me in a good mood 😁

LimitIsUp · 15/09/2021 23:44

If I could just pause the weather and hours of daylight to match what we had today and replicate it throughout the year - now that would be perfect

LimitIsUp · 15/09/2021 23:45

That said, I intend to focus on the positives about winter
