Does this look like the start of chicken pox :(

DD is 3.. Had to pick her up early on Fri from preschool as she wasn't well and vomited there, vomited again at home. Completely fine yesterday. Appetite normal. Noticed two tiny spots on her face.. This morning it's developed onto her knees and her hands. Called 111, waiting for advice currently. Worried its chicken pox. I had her have the chicken pox vaccine earlier this year as well :(

Hand foot and mouth is doing the rounds. Could be that

ofwarren · 12/09/2021 09:50

I'd guess hand foot and mouth too

TheGriffle · 12/09/2021 09:51

They don’t look like pox, pox tend to be bigger, redder and more spread out starting on the trunk of the body. As pp said hand foot and mouth is going round the little ones at the minute so I’d guess that.

Mustardbay · 12/09/2021 09:52

What does her tongue look like, my daughter got spots on her bum too when she had hand foot and mouth.

hotasharibo · 12/09/2021 09:55

I think it looks like hand foot and mouth

Tanith · 12/09/2021 10:01

Chickenpox tends to start on the torso and spread out. I've not heard of vomiting as a symptom. Smallpox (it won't be that! Smile) was the other way around.

That looks more like Hand, Foot and Mouth to me.

Pebbledashery · 12/09/2021 10:01

Just noticed a blister on her tongue also... She's been in her new pre school a week.

No it doesn't.

allycat4 · 12/09/2021 10:03

Another vote for hand foot and mouth

Pebbledashery · 12/09/2021 10:05

Guessing she's contagious also? How long will she need to be kept off for, says first 5 days is most contagious online.

I also came on to say there are a lot of similarities between chicken pox and hand foot and mouth.

If she has trouble sleeping because of the itching you can give her some piritin (piriton? The anti histamine over the counter bottle for kids anyway) as well as calpol etc

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 12/09/2021 10:24

And our childcare provider took my child back as soon as they were well in themselves (no temperature or crying), there isnt an isolation period like with chicken pox

ShowOfHands · 12/09/2021 10:27

Looks just like hand foot and mouth and has followed the pattern. Ill first with a fever and then a rash a few days later.

You don't need to keep her off preschool if she is well but wait and see as the blisters can make their mouths very sore. Lots of soft food , cold drinks and ice lollies.

Pebbledashery · 12/09/2021 10:50

Yeah she had a fever on Friday and was sick, but she's perfectly fine today in herself, just the rash. I'll call them in morning and see what they say. I thought it was contagious

It is very contagious but not usually dangerous in any way so there is no recommendation to isolate. Having said that I turned up with a DC at nursery school once to find it closed with a notice on the door saying that 22 out of 26 children had it!

lockdownalli · 12/09/2021 10:59

Another vote for hand foot and mouth.

Get lots of ice pops and tasty cold food in store. I hope she feels better soon. Flowers

manchester54 · 12/09/2021 11:03

Hand foot & mouth for sure. My DS had it recently

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 12/09/2021 11:06

No it doesn't - those look like pimples/raised bumps and chicken pox is unmistakably blisters.

This was my DD's neck when she had it.

It is contagious but so are the vast majority of viruses. Same as with a mild cold, they spread anyway and are not considered dangerous to the general population so no need to avoid public places.

Howshouldibehave · 12/09/2021 11:08

No, it doesn’t look like chicken pox. They usually start on the trunk and then spread quickly.

Pebbledashery · 12/09/2021 11:23

Not sure what the guidance is, it says on nhs website that the first 5 days is the most contagious, I would assume I couldn't send her in?

ShowOfHands · 12/09/2021 12:45

If you're looking at the NHS page, you'll see a paragraph on there specifically about staying off school. The guidance you're looking for is there and has been confirmed by posters on this thread: www.nhs.uk/conditions/hand-foot-mouth-disease/

It's quite clear that you only keep them off if unwell. Viruses are contagious, of course they are. But we don't make people isolate with most of them.

Hoping it remains mild and passes quickly. It usually much worse for adults who come down with it.

Sweetpea1532 · 12/09/2021 13:47

Hand, foot, and mouth is going around the US, too

YouMeandtheSpew · 12/09/2021 14:36

I reckon HFM too. We had it last week and the week before. Apparently it’s most common in late summer/early autumn. Like others, my son’s HFM rash wasn’t confined to his hands and feet, it was actually worst on his tummy and bum (so I didn’t realise what it was for a while).

Pebbledashery · 12/09/2021 15:07

It's progressed to her feet now, there's the bumpy rash on her feet and inside of her palms. :( she's completely fine within herself though.
