Best Cities in the World - Manchester is #3

blueskyday12 · 08/09/2021 15:51

I read today that Manchester was ranked the 3rd best city in the world (source: www.manchesterworld.uk/news/manchester-named-third-best-city-in-world-by-time-out-three-of-our-favourite-things-about-the-city-3375672). Second place was Amsterdam, and first was San Francisco. I know these rankings are subjective (there are so many variables to consider!) but I was wondering what other mumsnetters think the best city in the world are. I personally think New York is the best city in many ways, but definitely not in terms of affordability for housing and education. Also, I would have thought Edinburgh would have been higher on the list!

Glasgow beats Manchester

santaslittlehohoho · 08/09/2021 15:52

  1. Chicago
  2. Vienna
  3. New York
  4. Boston
  5. Copenhagen

From my personal experience!

Manchester shouldn't be anywhere near that list, I'm guessing the criteria didn't include Piccadilly Gardens of the majority of Manchester Hmm

In the UK
#1 London
#2 Glasgow
#3 Manchester/Liverpool/Cardiff

Worldwide
#1 London
#2 Tokyo
#3 New York

blueskyday12 · 08/09/2021 15:58

I have lived in Chicago before and I would agree it is high on the list! A lot to offer and much more affordable than London/New York

Tokyo is on my bucket list. Would love to visit one day.

I had a brilliant weekend in Manchester recently, but 3rd best in the world seems… ambitious.

Here's my top 3:

New York
Vancouver
Melbourne

TornadoTrinity · 08/09/2021 16:01

For me it's;

UK

  1. London
  2. Edinburgh
  3. Belfast

Globally;

  1. Paris (I am a former inhabitant - probably not so keen on the tourist parts, but away from those, I can't beat Paris)
  2. Valencia
  3. London
EL8888 · 08/09/2021 16:02

What about the shocking weather?! I lived there for the first half of my life and the unremitting rain prevents me from moving back

Personally l love Bristol, San Francisco and Vancouver

WhiskeyNeverStartsToTasteNice · 08/09/2021 16:02
  1. New York
  2. Bangkok
  3. Prague

They're my favourites, which is possibly not quite the same as "the best"

I saw a link and I clicked! :p

Barcelona is my favourite city. Uk city (of the ones I'd been to) would be Liverpool. Didn't like Manchester at all when i was there a few years back

TornadoTrinity · 08/09/2021 16:08

A bit like the pp, I love Liverpool but am not mad on the bits of Manchester I've seen. It's massive like London though, so probably hard to say, unless you know it fairly well. I live near London and adore it, but maybe I'd hate it if I'd only ever seen the odd part.

blueskyday12 · 08/09/2021 16:10

I'd love to see Manchester on a sunny day. Every time I have gone it has rained a lot. But to give Manchester some credit, it has a lot of good places to eat and good options for shopping compare to Sheffield/ other nearby cities.

Greatest city in the UK without a doubt. World? I love Manchester, but I don’t choose to stay here on my holidays 😃

DrWhoNowww · 08/09/2021 16:19

Have they been to Manchester Grin I mean, it’s nice, but not top 3.

U.K. top 3 for me
1)London
2) Cardiff
3) Birmingham

Worldwide

  1. Hong Kong
  2. Los Angeles
  3. Bangkok

Like a PP Tokyo is a bucket list destination.

ZenNudist · 08/09/2021 16:19

Eh? I'm a mancunian and I don't agree with this!

Love Amsterdam though. And San Fran.

Also Prague but you might not want to live there.

Atalune · 08/09/2021 16:20

Hmmm

SF is dirty!

1- Tokyo
2- London
3- Berlin

In my humble opinion from experience of living in all three.

Close contenders

1- SanDiego
2- Melbourne
3- Amsterdam

Atalune · 08/09/2021 16:20

Barcelona!!! How could I forget!

MinesAMassiveSalad · 08/09/2021 16:21

Anywhere but San Francisco or Manchester.

LaBellina · 08/09/2021 16:24

Surprised that there’s no German city in the top 3. If I could live anywhere in the world it would be in Berlin.

Second for me would be Antwerp in Belgium and number 3 would be Cape Town despite the significant personal safety risk.

And I don’t get that Amsterdam is second place. Dirty, overcrowded with tourists and very expensive.
