Best Cities in the World - Manchester is #3

blueskyday12 · 08/09/2021 15:51

I read today that Manchester was ranked the 3rd best city in the world (source: www.manchesterworld.uk/news/manchester-named-third-best-city-in-world-by-time-out-three-of-our-favourite-things-about-the-city-3375672). Second place was Amsterdam, and first was San Francisco. I know these rankings are subjective (there are so many variables to consider!) but I was wondering what other mumsnetters think the best city in the world are. I personally think New York is the best city in many ways, but definitely not in terms of affordability for housing and education. Also, I would have thought Edinburgh would have been higher on the list!

This must be like those internet sites where I know if they recommend a particular cafe of area of town, I need to avoid.

My nominations are Rome, Cadiz, Kyoto.

Lived in London for a couple of years and hated it, lot's to see/do if you've got money particularly but I found the people awful and it generally depressing. New York/Boston/Chicago/San Fran I find the same - not a fan of American cities. I didn't like Amsterdam either. I like a lot of Spanish/Italian cities (not Madrid, Rome or Barca - the crime there is too much) but Valencia, Malaga, Palma, Santiago, Florence. Vancouver is very nice, Porto Portugal is lovely, I always feel quite at home in KL and Bangkok is pretty cool - couldn't live there though!

Vancouver has to top my list as best city to live in though from the places I've been.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 08/09/2021 16:32

Glasgow is fabulous
I love Rome as well, which I know is very polarising, but I totally think I could live there - dirt, crime and all.

CottonSock · 08/09/2021 16:35

Not a fan of Manchester sorry.
I do love Bristol and Cardiff.
Abroad my favourites have been Vancouver (when not raining). In Europe its Lisbon for me.

MinesAMassiveSalad · 08/09/2021 16:37

I really didn't like Vancouver. Possibly because my DH insisted on us traipsing with young kids around all the worst ("atmospheric") bits. It was the holiday where I flipped and became totally bourgeois. I did my time in dodgy areas growing up and find nothing interesting or edgy about them just because they are half way round the world.

Looking at the link the first two mentions are for nightlife and sport ( I.e. football.)

Not driving factors for choosing my holiday destination!

Winniewonka · 08/09/2021 16:48

@blueskyday12 "I'd love to see Manchester on a sunny day"

Hop on a train if you can, it's currently 28 degrees! 😀

DiscoDown21 · 08/09/2021 16:51

It’s subjective isn’t it. Your own personal opinions will all be different. What’s it based on? Living in a city and holidaying in a city are very different things. I’ve travelled to a fair few amazing cities but I couldn’t comment on what they would be like long term and I’m sure the shine goes from some if you live there.

I live a few miles out of Manchester city centre and I love the city. I’m not sure id view it as one of the best in the world. I love being so close to I think a small city accessible centre, I can walk it all on foot easily. It’s pretty flat. It has great hospitality/gig venues etc. And it is actually not always bad weather despite its reputation. Lovely sunny day today!

NeverTalkToStrangers · 08/09/2021 16:52

Either Amsterdam has improved a lot since I was last there or they judged it last year during a lockdown with no tourists. The druggy element made it really stressful the last time I was there - admittedly many years ago.

Biker47 · 08/09/2021 16:57

San Francisco number one? Can only assume the judges ignored the massive vagrancy and petty theft problem they are currently suffering, as well as the large amount of human faeces that are reported regularly on the streets.

LaBellina · 08/09/2021 16:58

Amsterdam has only become worse in the past years @NeverTalkToStrangers.

The Red Light district has in the past years become a no go area during at night where even the police has very limited influence.
Ofcourse it’s not all of Amsterdam that is like that but still.

tywysoges · 08/09/2021 17:03

I love São Paulo. Not sure I could live there - way too busy, but I love it. Love London and Dublin too. And Cardiff.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 08/09/2021 17:06

I went to university in Manchester and always miss it.

However, we took dd in the holidays and it all looked a bit grotty. Laid a few ghosts for me really.

Shirleyphallus · 08/09/2021 17:09
  1. Sydney
  2. Barcelona
  3. London
GameSetMatch · 08/09/2021 17:11

Liverpool is much better than Manchester…. How was it judged?
Green space? Wages? Pollution? I need contents

Mercurial123 · 08/09/2021 17:11

As much as I like Manchester it wouldn't even be in my top 20.

  1. Kyoto
  2. Hanoi
  3. Cape Town
  4. Tokyo
  5. New York
Aposterhasnoname · 08/09/2021 17:15

Jesus my DH is going to be unbearable when he hears this. If I have to hear another monologue about why Manchester is better than where we live I swear I won’t be responsible for my actions.

Hoppinggreen · 08/09/2021 17:15

I am about 40 mins from Manchester and go regularly, I really like it but it wouldn’t get in my top 3, maybe top 10.
Mine would be
Seville
Munich
Madrid

Councilworker · 08/09/2021 18:16

Residents of the cities were asked to rate their home city on various factors I think . So if your favourite city isn't there it's because the residents surveyed didn't sing its praises!

aquashiv · 08/09/2021 18:34

New York
London
Paris
Imo.

Nonbio46 · 08/09/2021 23:35

Ah, my heart belongs to Barcelona. I’d love to move over there. 🥰

HeronLanyon · 08/09/2021 23:39

New York/London - dead heat.
Chennai
Porto

HeronLanyon · 08/09/2021 23:41

So sorry I need to relegate Porto to fourth
Naples in third.
