I heard there's bugs in the water so we can't use it in our nose

Greenmarmalade · 07/09/2021 00:04

We drink it! Where are you?

WheelieBinPrincess · 07/09/2021 00:04

Why, do you live somewhere with untreated tap water Confused

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/09/2021 00:05

Of course you can.

shygirliee56 · 07/09/2021 00:07

I live in London however I read somewhere that we are allowed to drink it Bec our acid in our stomach kills the bacteria or something like that

WheelieBinPrincess · 07/09/2021 00:07

I think you’re vastly overthinking this.

Greenmarmalade · 07/09/2021 00:10

Just reclean your nose with boiled (not boiling…) water.

In London the air you’re breathing is full of poison.

TimeForTeaAndG · 07/09/2021 00:13

Yeah, hot water either sits in a tank or goes through the boiler system so isn't fresh.

Boiled and cooled mains cold water should be used for cleaning wounds or other medical purposes.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 07/09/2021 00:15

Don't you ever swim in the sea?

Monty27 · 07/09/2021 00:15

I think you’re vastly overthinking this.
And some OP Salt? It kills germs
HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 07/09/2021 00:17

I've done it with tap water. I'm still here to tell the tale. Besides millions of people every day will get water up their nose whilst showering but no ones gotten sick because of it

Aquamarine1029 · 07/09/2021 00:18

Boiled then cooled or distilled water should be used for nasal rinses, not tap water.

shygirliee56 · 07/09/2021 00:19

@Aquamarine1029 see that's what I'm saying Bec I did read you can't but praying I'll be alright lol

OP posts:
WheelieBinPrincess · 07/09/2021 00:20

I don’t think you need to pray OP, you’ll be fine. Nothing will happen.

MBM18 · 07/09/2021 00:22

That is correct. I'm not sure what advice you should seek but I think it's worth following up.
MaitlandGirl · 07/09/2021 00:22

If you’ve got a hot water tank then it’s not the best idea, but if you’ve got instant hot water (gas boiler, no tank) then you should be fine.

shygirliee56 · 07/09/2021 00:31

@MaitlandGirl I have a gas boiler

shygirliee56 · 07/09/2021 00:32

@Mistlewoeandwhine that's what I read that same article 😭🥴

OP posts:
shygirliee56 · 07/09/2021 00:32

But like others said sometimes when your in the shower the water goes in your nose so I'm not going to get myself too worried 🙃

OP posts:
MissCruellaDeVil · 07/09/2021 00:36

It's not something you should get in the habit of, definitely boil and allow the water to cool to kill any bacteria that may be in it. However I think you'll live to tell the tale.

Bipbopboo66 · 07/09/2021 00:36

Honest question. What are you thinking you are going to contract from London water up your nose?

If its come from a hot water tank... There are some very rare bacteria you might have introduced into your body.

But i think you should relax.

Even if you do become poorly, a GP will help.

I have to think 99.9%, you will be fine.
It can actually kill you - www.cbsnews.com/news/woman-dies-from-brain-eating-amoeba-after-using-neti-pot-tap-water-to-rinse-sinuses/
Wow I never knew this. I used to have one of those devices and used tap water.

RubyGoat · 07/09/2021 00:39

Probably it will be fine. People stick their fingers up their noses up their noses all the time - under your nails are generally filthy unless you're a frequent user of a nail brush (& you also change or disinfect the brush very often). But, yes, I use a neti pot & you should always use either prepared sterilised water, or boiled & cooled water & the proper salt. And always rinse your pot before use too if you don't use it daily, because dust, flies, etc.

NannyR · 07/09/2021 00:45

You can't do much about it now except making sure you use boiled water in future.
I listened to a very interesting podcast about this a few weeks ago and the problem is an amoeba getting high up in your sinuses and then crossing to your brain. They did stress that it was incredibly rare though so I don't think you need to worry.
