To want to shake the couple on Secret Spenders?

How can people be this dim?
It's not that they spend a bit ... they spend a LOT. They don't know how much they spend. They "treat themselves" non stop. They don't have a any idea how stupidly high their loan interest rate is. They are FUCKWITS.

How do people - perfectly nice, working couple - behave like this?

A bit nasty OP.

They’ve asked for help to change and you’re obviously enjoying the programme.

People do get into a right old pickle with money and debt, tale as old as time.

SophieHMS · 06/09/2021 21:22

I didn't enjoy it, no. My jaw was on the floor. I don't watch much tv and this was a flick through that showed them saying omg I didn't realise that all these subscriptions amounted to £400 a month. I'm genuinely amazed that they hadn't added the sums up.

Ah, I remember my first time watching TV.

DrManhattan · 06/09/2021 21:27

I know someone, who i thought was bright, who had 3 x gym memberships. Paying £££ each month. Didn't even go to the gym.

ZoBo123 · 06/09/2021 21:34

They had a take home of 5 grand a month and from that couldn't save for a house deposit! Even saving a grand each month would put their take home at more than average family

Againstmachine · 06/09/2021 21:35

Nope I agree with OP having watched it, the people were fuckwits.

Any idiot could see where money was going.

TakeMeToYourLiar · 06/09/2021 21:36

What channel was this?

TartanJumper · 06/09/2021 21:46

A lot of people are awful with money management, it's not a surprise.

VladmirsPoutine · 06/09/2021 21:46

Ah, I remember my first time watching TV.

Sushirolls · 06/09/2021 21:48

I'm just watching it on +1 😳

IvorHughJarrs · 06/09/2021 21:52

I wonder if these people are really this clueless or just after 15 minutes of fame. No sensible person could spend like that and not realise the costs would add up

TravelDreamLife · 06/09/2021 22:06

These 'reality' tv shows aren't real. They will have manipulated & exaggerated their situation a lot for good, controversial viewing.

Having said that, I've friends who are similar with spending (although manage to save too). It's lack of financial education & care. Some people just believe 'something will come up' to save them.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 06/09/2021 22:16

Can this be real though?

BalloonSlayer · 06/09/2021 22:40

It sounds like the secret eaters programme where the people couldn't understand why they hardly ate a thing but couldn't lose weight so they filmed them 24/7 with their consent and behold there they were in and out of Greggs all day, eating cereal with double cream at 2am etc . . .

Gingernaut · 06/09/2021 22:51

A large portion seems to have been spent on naff garden ornaments.

Gingernaut · 06/09/2021 23:13

The crazy thing is they are capable of earning £5k a month between them.

WTF do they do to earn that kind of money??

They must manage budgets at work??

DroopyClematis · 06/09/2021 23:33

I was gobsmacked at the wife's beauty habits. She claimed that her £400+ beauty spending was like a dental appointment!
Yet they were desperate to find a deposit for a house.
Twice weekly takeaways, her Creme de la Mer moisturiser???)

DroopyClematis · 06/09/2021 23:35

Pressed too soon.
How many hundreds on daft subscriptions , every month which even she admitted was stupid

At least they seemed convinced that £15000+ a year could be saved! .

Gingernaut · 07/09/2021 00:33

The subscriptions!

£400 a month on gin, cocktails, food, face masks, razors, eco deodorant...where do they find these places?

TheHouseILiveIn · 07/09/2021 00:38

Yeah this episode was mental.
Their loan was 20% APR for £7k, yet they were wasting about £1500 a month on shit. Food, alcohol and beauty subscriptions... loads of takeaways..... I find it hard to believe.

TheHouseILiveIn · 07/09/2021 00:40

I didn't even know a gin or cocktail subscription was a thing!

TheHouseILiveIn · 07/09/2021 00:41

The mobile beautician made me laugh "yes she's a great client....she pays this this and this every month. Perfect client" 🤣🤣

Pemba · 07/09/2021 00:54

This is the Channel 4 programme, right? I've not seen this episode yet. But sounds like the previous ones, couple have a very good income, at least £4,000 net each month coming in between them. So they obviously have decent jobs and therefore some intelligence, you'd think. Yet they have absolutely no idea where all the money is going and why they're unable to save, and they may even be in debt. Of course not.

The TV team sort it all out for them and show them how they can quite painlessly save thousands a year. All is great, end of show.

Yet you never find out much about their budget, like what they're paying on a mortgage or rent, which is surely the biggest item in most people's budget, and must make all the difference.

I would like these shows to have a much wider variety of people with different finances and really help people who are actually on a tight budget. This would be helpful to viewers. Could they not do that and still make it entertaining? It's so formulaic at the moment.

I thought tv was supposed to educate as well as entertain? At least for Channel 4 and BBC. But I suspect it is easier just to make a show where the viewers can enjoy feeling superior to the spendthrift idiots featured.

Boredmotherofone · 07/09/2021 00:58

The only thing that annoyed me, was how they were made to glare at each other at the beginning of the program! It creeps me out!

It's like those YouTube couples who look at the other one whilst they're speaking, instead of speaking to the camera CRINGE!!! Confused

TheHouseILiveIn · 07/09/2021 00:59

Yeah it was very fake: they could save £15k a year by making the changes. Why not show a couple on £40k a year between them. Wouldn't make good telly because there'd be no changed to make!
