To not understand pulled pork

NinjaExodus · 05/09/2021 20:27

Admittedly I haven't eaten much of it.

But when I have it's already cold; surely it's in the format that is designed to go cold the quickest which is really not very nice in a burger or a roll.

What's the attraction?

I don't actually eat meat anymore but isnt it just a way of making cheap meat taste nicer by using loads of sauce to moisten it and 'pulling' it to increase the surface area sauce sticks to?

WaggleToWarlock · 05/09/2021 20:29

I recommend trying it hot!

I love pulled pork, and also the 15-hour process of making it - very satisfying.

TroysMammy · 05/09/2021 20:33

I always think of pulled pork as food that has been messed about with. The same goes for mushy peas.

cakewitch · 05/09/2021 20:34

I 'get' food.. but I agree.. I cannot for the life of me fathom pulled pork.

NotJuryDutyAgain · 05/09/2021 20:36

I'm not a big pulled-pork person, but it really is all about the sauce. You need a sauce that's right for you, whether that's on the sweeter or the tangier end of the scale. A good-quality bun helps, too.

WeAreTheHeroes · 05/09/2021 20:38

Huh?! I just think of it as a joint that's fall apart tender. No need to baste, etc whilst it's slow cooking. We don't stick lots of sauce on it. Leftovers can easily be used for lots of different things.

Justanotherlurker · 05/09/2021 20:40

Proper slow cooked pulled pork is devine, just like briskit.

The UK is just trying to catch up to the US, there is a reason why it's popular but there isn't many restaurants doing it right at the minute beacause the time needed is not cost worthy.

Even cold you need the proper hot sauce and coleslaw combo, until you have eaten a good one you won't get it, even then it is personal preference. But overall YABU

MargosKaftan · 05/09/2021 20:40

Oh I've only served it hot. Perhaps its that people are doing mass catering with it rather than just for a one family meal?

Pork is often dry unless its cooked slowly in a way to keep lots of moisture in it. Pulled pork is just a very popular way of doing that. Round Christmas time it'll be all about the slow cooked hams.

Are you ok with ribs or are they equally not your thing/too messed with?

3scape · 05/09/2021 20:42

Overly sugary, fatty and then it's actually dry. Not for me.

Then it's been done wrongly!

I've never cooked it at home. Only had it in restaurants and it is cold by the time the waitress has served it to the table.

Yep Cheap meat that unless it was cooked very slowly and slathered in sauce would be inedible. It's a staple in boarding school canteens, and mass catering places. I can eat it, but I'd prefer something else.
NinjaExodus · 05/09/2021 20:47

Or waiter! Jeez check my sexism, I'm sorry for that I just remember one particularly disappointing 'pulled pork burger' that involved a really lovely waitress who gave me a free glass of wine for my birthday and a gopping luke warm pulled pork monstrosity.

What kind of restaurants are you eating in? Confused

Pork shoulder cooked low and slow for a few hours with bbq sauce on (cover with foil) is lovely but we eat it hot. Its nice the next day reheated in the microwave and used as a filling in a roll with coleslaw too
ShuddaBeenMe · 05/09/2021 20:53

If it's served cold in a restaurant, send it back Confused

It was a steak house called Bar and Block. What other details do you need?

I like pulled pork but only when it’s dry 😂 I don’t like any sauce on it, especially BBQ

It was warm when it arrived and just lost heat almost immediately as I cut the enormous burger up due to the nature of the the shredding? the pulling? It doesn't retain heat that chopped up weird stuff.

It wasn't served cold. See later posts. Thank you for your confused face, though, I liked it.

I can’t stand it, I find it way too sweet and the bits all stick in my back teeth

I am hoping it will go the way of salted caramel and fade in to obscurity as I feel like it was everywhere in about 2014

FreeButtonBee · 05/09/2021 21:03

I honestly wouldn’t order it in a restaurant other than a meat-centric or BBQ specialist place. I do make a fairly awesome one myself and the leftovers are spectacular- particularly in a toastie with cheddar cheese and thinly sliced red onion.

There is a fine balance on the amount of sauce. I don’t like too much so that’s it’s sloppy or too little so it’s dry. Goldilocks’ pulled pork! 😄

No, I am sure you add some condiment to your vegetarian dishes but it's a way of using the animal and understanding that certain cuts requires more attention, a well done slow cooked pork butt can in the right circumstances be just as devine as wagu steak.

OP
But when I have it's already cold;

another post about it being cold...

Your the type who warms up a sunday dinner in a microwave because it isn't hot enough..
