Most real airbnbs are dirty

So I have been fortunate enough to have three breaks away this summer but in each place I have stayed I have had to clean once I got there as they really weren't clean!

All booked on airbnb but varying locations and prices. Wondered if it was just me so looked at reviews and no one has said anything negative about cleanliness.

Having a toddler and a Labrador I didn't think my cleanliness standards were high but apparently they are!

Aibu to say that airbnbs are dirty and not want to pay the cleaning fees they add on!

Examples of dirtyness:
Muck around taps
Dirty toilet hinges
very dusty trinkets and ornaments
dirty dish drying rack
toddler getting dirty feet from just walking around the place
dirty doorframes with fingerprints on
dirty mirrors and windows
very dirty oven
rug that has a texture to it as obviously full of grime (didn't clean that obvs but rolled it up out of the way)
Stained mugs

Maybe these are small things but once you notice one thing I felt like I then noticed lots of others and then just had a feeling of being unclean so had to get supplies to clean, the next two I just took cleaning supplies with me and was prepared. Maybe I need to star booking souless but clean hotels

Yabu in my opinion. I’ve stayed in lots and they have been fine for me.

SmokeyDevil · 03/09/2021 23:12

Some don't even look clean in the photos.

Not all hotels are clean either though.

bruffin · 03/09/2021 23:14

Ive stayed in a few airbnbs and non are how you describe

hellosunshineagainx · 03/09/2021 23:19

Ah sounds like I have just been unlucky.

The problem is even with these ones non of the reviews say they weren't very clean so then how do you know 🤷‍♀️

Stay in hotels.

MrsSkylerWhite · 03/09/2021 23:25

We’ve stayed in two, both of which were much nicer than we expected for the prices.

Sparklesocks · 03/09/2021 23:25

I’ve always been quite lucky, the ones I’ve stayed at have been very clean. We actually stay at one particular favourite place at least once a year and they have a professional cleaner who comes in between each guest.

But I suppose with the sheer number of them out there that you will come across your less clean ones!

Redglitter · 03/09/2021 23:26

Certainly not my experience. I've stayed in 4 different Air BnBs and they were absolutely spotless when we arrived

Elouera · 03/09/2021 23:37

Air BNBs were originally just a spare room in someones home. More and more, they have turned into managed properties with a linen service and professional cleaners. These ones tend to be at a hotel standard, whereas someones actual home isnt!

I've never stayed in one that dirty, but have been put off by requests/demands to strip beds, put out the bins, mops floors etc, despite already paying a cleaning fee. Maybe an apart/hotel in future would be better?

AlrightThereSkippy · 03/09/2021 23:39

I've stayed in a few air bnbs. Actually, based on those few, yes, most weren't up to my (average at best) standards of cleanliness. I had one recently where I felt I had to clean it when we got there.

freeandfierce · 03/09/2021 23:49

I use them loads, only had one dirty one where the bathroom was covered in hairs and I mean covered! Went away to one in summer and no towels supplied, only found out on arrival in the evening, owner told me that wasn't part of self catering?! The rest have been amazing and far better than any hotel.

TractorAndHeadphones · 03/09/2021 23:50

Same here, across 6 countries. But all pre-Covid, off peak in popular tourist destinations

At the moment many hotels are actually better value than AirBnB'.s Price difference negligible and with hotel you always get more security etc.
GoWalkabout · 03/09/2021 23:54

Their reviews have gone to shit. Not accurate at all.

Elouera · 03/09/2021 23:56

@TractorAndHeadphones- I completely agree that hotels are often better value! The price of AirBNB's seems to have gone up drastically over the past few years!

Kite22 · 03/09/2021 23:59

Not my experience either.

Not that I make a habit of going around inspecting the hinges on toilets.

I tend to use an AirBnB to sleep and eat in and would generally be out of the house / flat most of the day at whatever I am in the area for. I've not used loads but those I have have all been nice.

WindyScales · 04/09/2021 00:04

We’ve stayed in 2 Airbnb’s and both have been as you’ve described. We did complain in one property as you could tell only the bed sheets had been changed. We did get the cleaning fee back on that one. The other one was just really grimey and was a family home. It had been ‘cleaned’ in terms of sheets changed and place hoovered but actual cleanliness of kitchen cabinets and countertops was definitely lacking.

Strugglingtodomybest · 04/09/2021 00:05

Every one I've stayed in has been very clean.

spicychickenwing · 04/09/2021 00:05

I generally get the ick staying away from home. I get queasy if my feet touch the carpet or bathroom floor. Sliders help. I don't like my bare skin touching the sofa/bedding. And i just get all itchy and irritable and feel grubby the Whole time i am away.

The irony is i live in no show home! And am fairly laissez fair usually. Im not sure if its just a new fun way my anxiety is manifesting itself. But am home after a week away and in my own bed after a hot shower and loving it!

Have you left reviews for each stating not clean? That might help warn others and for the owners to know
FangsForTheMemory · 04/09/2021 00:27

I’ve only stayed in one and yes, it was grubby. As my stay was a long one, I ended up cleaning it too. I hadn’t expected this but the owner made no attempt to clean it at all - she had cleaners in once a month but I never saw her lift a finger herself. So I cleaned the shower and loo twice a week and my bedroom once a week.

Happymum12345 · 04/09/2021 00:38

I’ve stayed in two lovely airb&b’s this summer.

SirChenjins · 04/09/2021 00:39

We stay in them often and never had a problem - got one booked for the October holidays so hopefully our luck will hold. Remember to leave reviews when you come across a dirty property - MN is all very well but it doesn’t help future guests at the place

earsup · 04/09/2021 00:41

Have stayed twice...totally spotless and such a fab mattress...never slept so well..i peeped at the brand etc...it was an ikea one...!!

FanFiction · 04/09/2021 06:52

My ex had a flat which he rented out as AirBnB through an agency and it had cleaners. I can say from experience that although it was cleaned between clients, the standard was nowhere near mine!

During lockdown we stayed in it ourselves & I would clean it once a week and the difference was huge. I was far more thorough.

We also travelled a lot, and sstayed in a number of AirBnB places across the UK. Cleanliness was variable. One or two newer conversions were pristine - largely because they had new things in them - but others were old and shabby, which seemed to correlate with slipped standards. On the whole, hotels were cleaner, and I found Travelodge and Premier Inns to be particularly clean.
