Going to the tip

Anyone else find this a really enjoyable experience? I think there's just something about getting rid of stuff and throwing it into those huge containers that feels really cathartic. I remember fondly as a kid going to the tip with my dad and absolutely loving it. I really love going, especially at the moment as it's still appointment system where I am (although that finishes next week).

YANBU - the tip is amazing and such a cathartic experience
YABU - seriously wtf are you on

I must admit I find it a chore. But this reminds me I've got a lot of stuff in the garage I really should take down there this afternoon.

itsgrand · 27/08/2021 14:25

oh YANBU I love the feeling of throwing stuff in those containers and driving off clutter free !!!!

Blindleadingtheblind · 27/08/2021 14:25

It's just makes me think how wasteful we are as a species and how most things are disposable in our throw-away society. I also worry about landfill.

TheSpottedZebra · 27/08/2021 14:29

Ours is an appointment system and I MUCH prefer it! You'd be queueing in the stink for ages before, but now it's just so efficient. I've been this morning, and excitingly... I have another trip booked for tomorrow morning. Mostly garden pruning.

I do too find it quite cathartic, but I am quite bad at throwing things out so it doesn't (for me) equate to a minimalist life.

One of the highlights when I go to visit my dad and step mum is a trip to the tip. The one by them has a jumble sale type bit. Anything that people throw away but that the staff think can be sold is put for sale. I love it!! I bought a china beer tap once (god knows why!) It's a bloody god job I don't drive and have to catch a train to visit, otherwise the amount of random stuff I would have bought would be insane 😁

BIoodyStupidJohnson · 27/08/2021 14:35

It is akin to a spiritual cleansing in our house yes.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 27/08/2021 14:36

Bin men didn't take our glass bin yesterday. Which means a trip to the bottle bank. That is stress relief.

At the moment we are trying to work out how to fit the garden rubbish plus youngest DD in the car as we have some big bits. Elder DD will have her first proper 'home alone'. (She's 10)

girlmom21 · 27/08/2021 14:41

I love it - especially now we need to prebook and don't have to queue for an hour on a Saturday morning Grin

BakewellGin1 · 27/08/2021 14:43

I love it... I could do with going but we are decorating downstairs in a few weeks so will have more boxes etc to go... So I am going to wait and do one or two big trips in one day which will make me happy.

loafcake · 27/08/2021 14:44

I love a trip to the tip, knowing we're getting rid of some clutter and old items. But I hate doing the actual tipping, luckily my SO unless he really does need help will tell me to just stay in the car because he finds it easier. Grin

Askingforfriend · 27/08/2021 14:46

I find it a very sobering experience. Not enjoyable at all.

BonnyandPoppy · 27/08/2021 14:50

I love going to the tip. We are just about to get a new kitchen and some other work done on the house so have been twice this week getting rid of stuff ready for the builders.

HeronLanyon · 27/08/2021 14:50

YANBU
I was at a tip just a few days ago. Relieved finally to have got rid of things lingering around (but got back to
See something which should have gone). Felt so giddy v nearly picked up huge garden pot someone else was getting rid of. Do had to tell me ‘under no circa-we’rehere to get rid !’ Quite right.
Had the complete oleaseure of being the last to use the metal bin before the huge forklift came to take away. Really great watching that. Felt about 3 or 4 !

Theblackdogagain · 27/08/2021 14:52

I love it as it's stuff leaving our home, our tip has a really high recycling percentage and are very militant about what goes where with soothes my eco side. They also have a preloved section we have a look round to buy other people's junk :-)

Hemingwaycat · 27/08/2021 14:55

Definitely not enjoyable, it’s just another crappy chore.

DynamoKev · 27/08/2021 14:58

Ours is closed for an unspecified period due to staff shortages. Probably caused by Brexit I imagine, apparently anything bad is, although I never met a worker from elsewhere in the EU up there.

garlictwist · 27/08/2021 15:03

My front garden is currently full of crap I need to take to the tip. It's been two weeks and I just can't motivate myself to go. I hate it! I think it's partly because my car boot doesn't stay open by itself so I have to kind of balance it on my head while I try load stuff into the car and it's so much work.

SayItBackwards · 27/08/2021 15:04

Don't like going to the tip but like the clear house afterwards

icedcoffees · 27/08/2021 15:07

I can't stand it, so I send DH Grin

DumplingsAndStew · 27/08/2021 15:08

No, I find it really stressful. I worry that I'll put something in the wrong place. Also, I'm disabled and worry I'll hold someone else up.

I also find it upsetting at times seeing how much crap we're putting into landfill.

RyanReynoldsHusband · 27/08/2021 15:09

I’ve never been, am I missing out?

CoralFish · 27/08/2021 15:12

It's a bit of a chore for me to be honest, but I LOVED it as a kid. Maybe when DD is old enough to appreciate it I will develop a renewed excitement for it. Grin

Thecathouse · 27/08/2021 15:12

The tip always makes me quite sad. So many perfectly good items wasted and either using energy in recycling plants or clogging up landfill

I do like browsing the help yourself section of the tip though

Has anybody tried leaving the stuff they are going to tip outside with a free to take, please help yourself signs? Then a post on Freecycle saying you have a help yourself pile first come first served?

I think people would be surprised how many people want their rubbish. Just keep it outside for 48 hours and I guarantee most of it would be gone before your planned tip trip

CoralFish · 27/08/2021 15:13

That said, our tip does have a live webcam, so you can see how big the queue to get in is before you set off, which I find AMAZING!

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 27/08/2021 15:15

YANBU - I love it! Simillarly taking things to the charity shop / second hand uniform shop.
