Going to the tip

Anyone else find this a really enjoyable experience? I think there's just something about getting rid of stuff and throwing it into those huge containers that feels really cathartic. I remember fondly as a kid going to the tip with my dad and absolutely loving it. I really love going, especially at the moment as it's still appointment system where I am (although that finishes next week).

YANBU - the tip is amazing and such a cathartic experience
YABU - seriously wtf are you on

@Blindleadingtheblind

It's just makes me think how wasteful we are as a species and how most things are disposable in our throw-away society. I also worry about landfill.
Yes, this thought is really depressing when scaled up across every ‘tip’ across the world.

But I also do get a slight cathartic thrill at offloading things (and we only get rid of things at the recycling centre as a last resort if cannot sell, mend, reuse etc).

@Thecathouse

The tip always makes me quite sad. So many perfectly good items wasted and either using energy in recycling plants or clogging up landfill

I do like browsing the help yourself section of the tip though

Has anybody tried leaving the stuff they are going to tip outside with a free to take, please help yourself signs? Then a post on Freecycle saying you have a help yourself pile first come first served?

I think people would be surprised how many people want their rubbish. Just keep it outside for 48 hours and I guarantee most of it would be gone before your planned tip trip

Yes! This works really well Grin

I like the decluttering process, hate the tip. So I send dh. He has done 5 trips this week as we are actually both off, which is a rare event!

Blindleadingtheblind · 27/08/2021 16:09

@Berkeys I've just listed a load of items on ebay. Done a charity shop run this morning. That makes me feel much better than a tip run.

RunnerDuck2020 · 27/08/2021 16:13

YANBU - I also have fond memories of going to the tip with my Dad as a child! Grin

God I find it a huge chore. There is literally no part of the entire thing I find enjoyable.

sayanythingelse · 27/08/2021 16:29

DH loves it. He's like a sugar crazed kid at Christmas when he gets to throw things in those big bins.

I find it a bit stressful personally. Seeing people throw away perfectly good looking bits of furniture and thinking "I could totally upcycle that!"

CounsellorTroi · 27/08/2021 16:57

We have a system where you have to book visits to the tip and a maximum number of visits allowed per year.

HeronLanyon · 27/08/2021 17:32

I use a tip where your registration plate determines which days you can go. Works pretty well.

LindaEllen · 27/08/2021 17:34

I hate the idea of going to the tip (and getting things from my house into the car to take them) but I do actually enjoy throwing the things into the containers!

Mydogisagentleman · 27/08/2021 17:34

I really enjoy going. Currently we have a load of Lino, a shed roof with felt on and about 15 tins of paint.
The tip we are supposed to use, charge for all those things.
We go to the one in the next county and it’s free.
Madness. The paint gets put into a special place and is reused rather than' thrown away

Nayday · 27/08/2021 17:43

YANBU. And whilst I don't like the actual stinky tip visit, I love loading the car and clearing out clutter.

Similarly, I also do a little happy dance when a charity shop bag appears on the door mat (I need to get out more I know!).

Bellend101 · 27/08/2021 17:52

I'm learning to drive and one of the things I'm most excited for is having the ability to take my own shite to the tip 😁

ItsSnowJokes · 27/08/2021 18:03

I love getting rid of the stuff from the house but I hate the tip. It's full of sexist workers who tut at women trying to get rid of stuff.

I said husband now. However, we have a rule that it must go the same day/weekend that we are sorting it out. Otherwise it accumulates and ends up being 2 or 3 car fulls.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/08/2021 18:11

During lockdown it wasn't fun .up to 2 hours wait just to get on site.
However last time I went that Sarah off the telly who rescues stuff shite , gives it someone to makeover and sells it was lurking around with a camera crew. She didn't want my stuff ...

HangingChads · 27/08/2021 18:12

Yanbu, especially enjoyable when combined with a trip to the junk shop attached to the tip!
