Neighbours have raised their garden and now overlooks ours!

Our row of new build houses have gardens that slope away from the house. Our neighbours have recently just levelled their garden by building decking that is level with the house, which means by the end of the garden they’re torso height above the fence. Not only that but they’ve built a pergola at the end of the garden and put a hot tub. This pretty much touches our boundary fence and means they can easily see into our garden when they use it. They said they would put trellis to screen but instead they’ve put fairy lights all over it! I think they need planning permission to raise the level that much but we’re going insane from the lights and the noise of the hot tub. I’m tempted to call the planning office but I don’t know if I’m being unreasonable? HELP

Time to use really smelly compost at the fence where their hot tub is.

Speak to Planning. They may well consider it an extension - and that is more than permitted development.

ZOMBIEEEEEEEEEEE

WiddlinDiddling · 23/03/2022 16:05

Ahahaha. I'd be building a stinky stinky compost heap.. got a dog, I would stick a dog-bog down there too (rectangular planked 'pit' full of bark mulch where you dump all the turds for them to rot down, keep topping it up with bark mulch).

Oh and a nice big bird table and feeding station - make sure you put out meat for the crows and rooks too, it's not just the seed and fat eaters that need feeding.

A hot tub experience with screaming crows and rooks will soon put them off!

@notjaneausten

I have bamboo in large tubs, it grows very quickly if you feed it. It also sheds lots of leathery bits of leaf or bark everywhere. A busy road runs close to my boundary wall, this helps to screen it. Don't plant bamboo in the ground, it could spread under the fence and their decking...Smile oops!
I mean - if you could be bothered there's an idea here about installing root boundaries on your side of the bamboo but not on the fence side - meaning it will 'run' into their garden and not yours... Grin

I KNOW this is a zombie but I still have to say to @Toomuchtrouble4me that that picture with the butchered trees practically makes me cry and I wish you could have sued those neighbours.

Justkeeppedaling · 23/03/2022 16:11

Unfortunately, a high fence will only stop you seeing them, and they you.
It's not going to stop any noise, or much of the light pollution.

Hot tubs are antisocial, germ-ridden, un-green, fetid pools of horribleness, and should be banned outside of spas (and possibly also in spas) in my opinion.

I sympathise with you Higgs - can you move? Sad

soupey1 · 23/03/2022 16:15

Get a couple of very bright mag lights and go out shining them in that direction every time they are out there!

Theunamedcat · 23/03/2022 16:16

Wondering how much hot tub usage they will be doing now the prices have risen

Dontbeamugallyourlifesucker · 23/03/2022 16:18

Op.. Borrow my grandkids for a few days Grin they will soon realise its not a good idea lolGrin

LittleDiaries · 23/03/2022 16:18

Tilltheend99 · 23/03/2022 16:23

And go and sit there every evening and start at them
Grin
WhoKnewWho · 23/03/2022 16:24

Get a deck chair and a tub of popcorn. Every time they’re out sit and watch them. Maybe even go as far as buying opera glasses.

Howling! Grin

MissMaple82 · 23/03/2022 16:25

You're being unreasonable. Do you really want to cause a neighbour dispute over fairy lights and a hot tub!?? I doubt very much fairy lights are that traumatic to your life, everybody has hot tubs these days, you can't control how others choose to spend their time. And honestly, your probably not at all that interesting that they want to look in your garden when they are out enjoying theirs. Get over yourself

ArmWrestlingWithChasNDave · 23/03/2022 16:26

Wait until they get their next energy bill and watch the hot tub and lights be left to rust.

BIWI · 23/03/2022 16:27

THIS IS A ZOMBIE THREAD. I'M SURE THAT THE OP HAS SORTED THINGS OUT BY NOW!

Chloemol · 23/03/2022 16:29

Report it to planning enforcement

LivMumsnet · 23/03/2022 16:34

We're going to close this zombie thread - let's hope the OP has sorted things out by now before hot tub season kicks off....
