Neighbours have raised their garden and now overlooks ours!

Our row of new build houses have gardens that slope away from the house. Our neighbours have recently just levelled their garden by building decking that is level with the house, which means by the end of the garden they’re torso height above the fence. Not only that but they’ve built a pergola at the end of the garden and put a hot tub. This pretty much touches our boundary fence and means they can easily see into our garden when they use it. They said they would put trellis to screen but instead they’ve put fairy lights all over it! I think they need planning permission to raise the level that much but we’re going insane from the lights and the noise of the hot tub. I’m tempted to call the planning office but I don’t know if I’m being unreasonable? HELP

@Elkey

Put something smelly near their hot tub. Really smelly.
Voodoo lily perhaps? Pretty but stinky
Theunamedcat · 25/08/2021 19:43

Do green cones smell? They are for you to scrape leftovers into and the rot down and disperse into the soil naturally

Higgs789 · 25/08/2021 19:46

😄😄 good ideas

Bee keeping take your fancy, OP?

Good shout 😂

How absolutely irritating! Make an utter nuisance of yourself. Make them rue the day they built their decking 😂

StatisticallyChallenged · 25/08/2021 19:52

Definitely get a compost heap going
Google "plants which attract bees and wasps" and plant as many as possible against the fence

You're just trying to be more eco friendly, right?

reallyworriedjobhunter · 25/08/2021 19:53

One of those really bright security lights so that every time they move they get it shining in their eyes?

Higgs789 · 25/08/2021 19:55

Thinking of buying some established trees to screen…
Maybe the bird poo will put them off

Oh yes, that's surely the perfect spot to hang many, many birdfeeders too

@Higgs789

New to this so not sure if I can but am I able to share a photo?
Yes please if you can OP. I'm struggling to picture this bit by the end of the garden they’re torso height above the fence' Does this mean the whole length of the garden is decking ?
purplesequins · 25/08/2021 20:09

take up a veg patch and make a comfrey feed
it is really really smelly anf very good for your plants (and comfrey flowers are very good for bees)

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 25/08/2021 20:10

Get a security camera on a pole (with infra red lighting) and live stream your fence for security purposes (images may include their hottub)

Might be worth speaking to planning if you want to take that route. My friend did a similar thing, her neighbours complained and planning did make her adjust some aspects. Planning had an issue with the fencing specifically as it has a maximum height from ground level and as the decking was raised this was well above. It cost them quite a lot of money to sort it out and when the contractors returned they mentioned that they had taken others down due to planning. So it can happen.

FATEdestiny · 25/08/2021 20:21

How off the ground is the decking?

What's under it?

(I'm secretly loving the idea of a 2-story garden space, if no planning permission is required.)

Pinkywoo · 25/08/2021 20:27

Plant a lovely rose garden on your side of the fence, then regularly feed them with big piles of manure!

picklemewalnuts · 25/08/2021 20:32

A bucket of water with comfrey leaves or other soft leafy plant in it makes a phenomenal stench. Sit that next to the fence.

Is it inflatable or rigid? Can they move it easily?

Grow something fast and prickly against the fence in that corner.

GillBiggeloesHair · 25/08/2021 20:34

Can you post a photo?

bellabasset · 25/08/2021 20:36

Check your deeds for planning if it's a new estate. In the event you're unable to do anything why not build a raised bed and plant bamboo or perhaps a pleached hedge such as photinia (ragged robin) where you underplant seasonal flowers.

We need a diagram!

CarryOnNurse20 · 25/08/2021 20:37

People are so rude and selfish. Doing the decking in itself would be fine if they put a nice fence up and made good your side particularly. I would sunbathe naked regularly, do the compost heap. Trampoline at the end of your garden. Start outdoor yoga that includes lots of chanting.

Higgs789 · 25/08/2021 20:45

Sorry complete novice! How do I post a photo??
