Red/ginger hair-what’s the big deal

Flowersintheattica · 25/08/2021 15:56

Toddler Dd has red/ginger/whatever colour you want to call it, and blue eyes. It’s the topic of conversation almost constantly among people-friends and strangers. It’s curly also, which adds to the hysteria more 😅
Dp and I both dark haired and people can’t seem to understand how this happened

Why is it such a big deal? In a good and/or bad way?

I love red hair and I really don’t understand the weird obsession with it in England!

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/08/2021 17:25

DS has that dark strawberry blonde
almost auburn colour and when little often had his hair touched by people for good luck! People would be less inclined to do that now I think

TheRebelle · 25/08/2021 17:27
@TheRebelle but I do think that allowing a 13 year old to dye their hair is almost confirming to the child that yes, it’s something negative and should be changed.
Honestly, you try having strangers make vile comments to you in the street and spitting on you as a young teen and see how you feel then. Sometimes being right isn’t the most important thing.

Topia · 25/08/2021 17:30

Oh it’s gorgeous! My DS2 is a toddler with tight curly red hair, pale skin & piercing blue eyes. Both myself & my DH are dark haired. He just looks so different to the rest of us & it is a striking look. Literally everyone comments on his hair, in positive ways of course. People are drawn to those with red hair. It’s unusual, & in toddlers it just makes you want to gobble them up!!!

Marove · 25/08/2021 17:33

@TheRebelle I don't think people have a clue or could even imagine what can happen to you just for having ginger hair, they think it's a bit of name calling and end of

SheABitSpicyToday · 25/08/2021 17:40

This is my daughters red hair. And she has olive green eyes.

@Marove tbh the bullying has had a lifelong affect on me, if my parents had just let me dye my hair I feel like I would’ve been a bit more confident or at least wouldn’t have stuck out so much, but no, you’ve got beauuuuutiful hair is so much more important than my feelings!

LoveFall · 25/08/2021 17:58

Another with a gorgeous red head who aged 25 died it black. So sad about it, but heck, it's her hair and I am sure she will grow to love her auburn locks.

Pale skin looks so white against black hair!

LoveFall · 25/08/2021 17:58

Aged 15 not 25.

Maria53 · 25/08/2021 18:06

I too am a gorgeous redhead OP Grin I'll warn you, the positive attention can go to your head. In my late 20s I've had to start dyeing it more as it is turning more brown. As a teenager I was always dyeing it due to the ginger thing!

I was only teased about it once, all positive otherwise. I think boys have a harder time for some reason.

ItsLikeSputnik · 25/08/2021 18:07

My DD 16 and DS 12, both have gorgeous red hair but living in Scotland, no one bats an eyelid about it. My hair was red, but is now going white as I age (I’m in my late 40s). I don’t dye my hair and the white/red combo now makes it look blonde. I’ve never had more comments about my hair than I get now!

RickJames · 25/08/2021 18:19

My teenage niece and nephew have red hair. The boy has got more blonde over the years but the girl is really red. It gets blonde streaks in it in the summer and looks amazing. She has amazing freckles too. Both tan although are pretty pale in winter. BIL is the red head. They are all very popular - BIL's red hair is definitely his thing in his gang of friends.

I always enjoy seeing darker skinned red heads, with the almost burgundy coloured hair. Its so unusual and beautiful.

Red hair is really special and I think, from what I see around me, that its not like it was in the 70's/ 80's when people were very rude generally about redheads. I mean im sure bullies will still have a go but in general red hair is much more beloved now.

I think some of the ginger hate came from (like a PP said) lunatic witch hunters in history.

Enjoy your beautiful child!

@SheABitSpicyToday

Incredible! Such a deep colour. She's a lucky girl!

CaptainMyCaptain · 25/08/2021 18:24

I was born red haired in the 1950s and people have always commented on it so it's nothing new. I have never been bullied over it though.

Cherrysoup · 25/08/2021 18:30

Whenever I moan about my very curly ginger hair, my mother claims people pay loads to get theirs the same. I have yet to meet anyone who has.

My toddler has red hair and blue eyes. People so far have only commented lovely comments on how gorgeous he looks!

StoneofDestiny · 25/08/2021 18:39

I notice how so many TV adverts feature children with red hair. I guess because they stand out more?

AwFeebs · 25/08/2021 18:41

I hated my red hair growing up but I adore it now at the age of 31! Love not dyeing it tbh, I could never keep on top of the upkeep with it!

iamthesandstorm · 25/08/2021 18:42

I love red hair! my dd as s toddler had gorgeous ringlet curls. .but they disappeared!

TwoMountains · 25/08/2021 18:56

Red hair is beautiful. And something that stands out!

And some people clearly don’t understand genetics.

It’s a recessive gene, so it’s not at all unusual for a red haired child to be born to parents who aren’t red haired. It just means each parent has a red haired ancestor somewhere in the family tree 🤷‍♀️

heyimadeit · 25/08/2021 19:01

I’ve got two red headed sons and one has brown eyes and the other blue.

My DH is strawberry blonde and I’m auburn.

Can anyone tell me how the genes work for red hair!?

ApplesAreTheBaneOfMyLife · 25/08/2021 19:02

I was disappointed that my children didn’t have red hair. Dh and all the males in his family have it.

QueenHofScotland · 25/08/2021 19:09

I tell my girls this too!

Red is a really hard colour to achieve and sustain - honestly I would LOVE red hair.

My DH had very dark, almost black, hair and mine is probably a very dark dirty blonde when it’s natural.

DH’s dad had red hair when he was very small, it later turned more of a brown.

DH’s maternal aunt had red hair.

I have paternal cousins who have red hair.

🤷‍♀️

FlumpsAreShit · 25/08/2021 19:10

I think people just comment on anything really. There isn't much to say about a baby other than their appearance. Everyone comments on my son's blonde hair/green eyes (we are both dark, I'm half Arab!). They're just being polite because everyone loves talking about their own child!

I have done the same with friends with redhead kids. Not because I have some weird obsession but...it just feels like you're meant to compliment other people's kids. Isn't it the done thing?
