Red/ginger hair-what’s the big deal

Flowersintheattica · 25/08/2021 15:56

Toddler Dd has red/ginger/whatever colour you want to call it, and blue eyes. It’s the topic of conversation almost constantly among people-friends and strangers. It’s curly also, which adds to the hysteria more 😅
Dp and I both dark haired and people can’t seem to understand how this happened

Why is it such a big deal? In a good and/or bad way?

@AwFeebs

I hated my red hair growing up but I adore it now at the age of 31! Love not dyeing it tbh, I could never keep on top of the upkeep with it!
I keep telling my 11 year old to never dye her hair!

But I guess when my girls are older they might be tempted. I have dirty blonde hair - very dark blonde but certainly not as nice as a brunette. I would love to have natural red hair that I didn’t have to dye

KingdomScrolls · 25/08/2021 19:11

I have red curly hair other than a couple of idiots at secondary school I've only had positive comments, my response to them was always I can change my hair colour if I choose to, it's going to be very difficult for you to change your personality.

Newgirls · 25/08/2021 19:13

It’s extremely in demand for modelling and acting is he is ever interested.

gingeristhenewblack43 · 25/08/2021 19:13

This is my DD9's hair, everyone comments on it and says how lovely it is. In Summer she gets natural blonde highlights.

When she was born one of my nieces on meeting her for the first time said 'Oh Auntie x she has golden hair!'

My ex MIL said 'I don't know where she gets the ginger from because none of our family are ginger.' 🙄 so I researched ginger hair and put her right.

Myself and exH have brown hair, I have green eyes and he has blue. My DM and my siblings have green eyes but my DD has blue eyes.

Redheads always stand out in a crowd, especially curly red hair. so lovely, but non in my family,

MrsMonkeyBear · 25/08/2021 19:16

My DD2 is exactly the same. I'm blonde, DH dark and DD is Ginger. It was quite a shock as DD1 had masses of dark brown hair.

We get lots of comments on it and they are never nasty or mean. My MIL is secretly ginger too (underneath her blonde hair dye) Although, I do tell people it's because I drank nothing but irn bru whist I was pregnant.

traintraveller · 25/08/2021 19:36

I'm auburn with blue eyes. No one has ever commented on it

inmyslippers · 25/08/2021 19:40

Beautiful it's beautiful

Thursa · 25/08/2021 19:43

Our youngest is a red head, we never allowed anyone to call him ginger, with blue eyes. We tell him it his Viking ancestry. Grin

I believe even in Scotland where there are the most redheads, it’s something like 12% of the population.

Brollypackedforscottishholiday · 25/08/2021 19:47

Dd's a few years ago.

My DD has short curly red hair and green eyes. She gets comments about it all the time. Usually complimentary but less so at High School.
She's very content with her looks though and has an amusingly brutal retort for anyone unwise enough to tease. Which I can't share as anyone who knows her would recognise it!

Pieceofpurplesky · 25/08/2021 19:49

DS's copper/red/auburn curly locks

Red/ginger hair-what’s the big deal
Peakypolly · 25/08/2021 19:55

I grew up seeing red hair as negative so I was amazed when my niece, aged 13, came to stay with me and, on a day trip to Oxford, on 3 separate occasions complete strangers approached us to remark on nieces striking hair.
It seems a marmite thing. As shown on this thread, so many adore it. It is never ignored like my mouse brown.

nildesparandum · 25/08/2021 20:21

I have a red haired granddaughter.
My paternal grandmother was a redhead, so is my brother and I have three red haired cousins on my father's side. My husband had a slight ginger tinge when he was young and we both have Irish ancestry
The rest of us all have light or mid brown hair.

Gingernaut · 25/08/2021 21:04

@heyimadeit

I’ve got two red headed sons and one has brown eyes and the other blue.

My DH is strawberry blonde and I’m auburn.

Can anyone tell me how the genes work for red hair!?

Red hair is a recessive gene.

A black haired person can carry one copy of the gene, but won't have red hair, as black dominates.

A brown haired person can also carry one copy of the gene, but also won't have red hair as the brown dominates.

If these two theoretical people meet, settle down and have children, the resulting possible hair colours could be

Black-red
Black-brown
Brown-red
and
red-red

Two 'normal' people, each carrying a red gene have a

50% chance of producing a normal child with red as a recessive gene

25% chance of producing a normal child with no recessive gene

and a 25% chance of producing a red haired child

So the chances of having a red (or blonde) child are pretty slim.

If someone carrying a single copy of the red gene pairs up with a red haired partner, the possibilities are

Black-red
Black-red
red-red
red-red

So they have a

50% chance of producing a normal haired child with a single copy of the red gene and a

50% chance of producing a red haired child.

How the red hair is 'expressed' is another matter entirely.

Eye colour is a complex inheritance

Gingernaut · 25/08/2021 21:08

Also meant to add that if two redhaired people have a child, there is no guarantee that their child will have a shade of red hair that resembles either of the parents.

As there are so many different variables which affect how genes are inherited and are expressed in conjunction with other genes, there are no guarantees that junior will resemble the parents.

HintofVintagePink · 25/08/2021 21:09

It’s beautiful! My son has auburn hair, the same colour as a red squirrel, and bright blue eyes and masses of brown freckles. He’s absolutely gorgeous.

Notimeforaname · 25/08/2021 21:09

I'm ginger with green eyes.
Every redhead I know has blue eyes though.

Cloudhopping · 25/08/2021 21:10

@TheRebelle I’m sorry you experienced such awful treatment as a teen. I too was bullied terribly as a teenager, not because of my hair specifically but about other physical features. I don’t think the colour of my hair helped though (I’m strawberry blonde). I suppose I just want my dd to be proud about her natural features including her hair because I really wasn’t. I do take on board your point though and I will think twice before I speak, if she asks about dying her hair.

Just out of interest do you dye your hair now or leave it natural? I suppose I want to know whether you have learned to like it at all? I got my hair dyed blonde but strangely enough hated it and have gone back to my natural colour.

Willyoujustbequiet · 25/08/2021 21:14

It's not a big deal but its lovely

Dd has gorgeous long curly red hair just like Merida and she gets complimented every day.

No one bats an eyelid here as its pretty common to be a redhead.

TheRebelle · 25/08/2021 21:26

@Cloudhopping Thank you. I did dye it blonde for about 10 years, and it made a huge difference to how people reacted to me and also how confident I felt. I’m a quiet, shy person by nature so having something that made me stand out was just the worst when all I ever wanted to do was fit in.

I stopped dying it when I met DH who is also ginger, funnily enough DH was never bullied but he had a really good group of friends which I think helped.

If my girls ever want to dye their hair I’ll let them because I want them to be happy with their appearance.

UserNameNameNameUser · 25/08/2021 21:32

You will eventually get sick of the comments, because for all the ones who gush about it, there are also a fair few who make snide comments about “gingers”, and sometimes physical violence too.

It’s partly rooted in racist comments about Irish immigrants.

olivethegreat · 25/08/2021 21:36

People have always stopped me and dd to gush about her hair. Now I'm like 'yeah yeah i know' but on the plus side she has very good self esteem!

HandlebarLadyTash · 25/08/2021 21:38

Love ginger hair

Blubellsarehere · 25/08/2021 21:40

I am naturally a red head
Have had it coloured blonde or brunette my entire adult life

Recently went back to full on copper or flame red as a 50 year old . Literally days ago . Have had double takes and lots of compliments .
I feel like I have “ come home “
Am loving clashing it with bright clothes and makeup . Bugger the idea redheads can’t wear red or pink . I have blue green eyes. I do wear fake tan though as it’s summer . But am looking forward to the winter contrast of bright lips and matching hair with pale skin .

Dd 23 loves her long red hair
It’s super curly too
She uses lots of coconut to control it
