The bloke with the animal shelter in Kabul.

Refusing to leave unless he can take ALL of his 60 odd staff and ALL of his 200+ cats and dogs with him. Hmm Expecting the government to make special rules for him and his friends.

Getting people out - understandable. The Taliban aren't going to look kindly on people who have translated for the military, or "collaborated" in other ways. But staff at an animal shelter?

And as for the refusing to leave without the animals and making this all out to be the UK government's fault? For not falling over themselves to arrange transport for a bunch of ownerless animals nobody wants when there are human beings in fear of their lives?

What is this guy playing at?

@DancesWithTortoises

I'm so worried that this silly man's grandstanding will mean fewer women and children get out. How can he be so selfish?

His people were safe, he knew that. They had been assured of places. But he demanded that the pets also got out and stomped around waving a cute dog in the air and shouting until he got his way.

Exactly this.
chaosrabbitland · 25/08/2021 17:10

@Xoxoxoxoxoxox

It will take time to load them and sort them out which could have been given to people. It's obvious a whole plane will take time and energy to load It's heartbreaking the energy around this is distracting from the PEOPLE that are in need of evacuation
and animals that may well be left to starve to death on the streets ,or be killed deserve saving just a much ,, im sorry but i believe animals are equal to us and deserve just as much a chance at safety as anyone else there , they do actually have feeling and feel pain and fear like we do . im very glad the amimals and staff are getting a chance to leave , why should they be left behind to god knows what fate just because you dont think they are worthy ?
chaosrabbitland · 25/08/2021 17:12

@kikipie

I like people more than I like dogs. Or cats for that matter.

Really? Quelle surprise

I like most dogs and cats over quite a lot of people. A lot of humans are actually quite abhorrent

same ,., i will take a cat or dog over most people any day
SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/08/2021 17:13

@EvilPea

He’s got a plane, he’s got the paperwork for the animals, he’s got jobs and visas for the staff He’s even got spare space for people on that plane. He just needs to have permission to land the damn thing
This.

The plane is chartered and (as I understand it) going to be filled with people. The animals are to be in the hold (where people aren't allowed to be anyway).

This isn't "taking places off people", it's adding animals into an empty space which would otherwise go unfilled.

Animals suffer horribly in war, too, and get much less consideration than people involved (rightly) - but there is no reason why, if it's possible to rescue them without harming a person, that it shouldn't be done.

listsandbudgets · 25/08/2021 17:15

@XenoBitch thank you glad to hear it's sorted.. a rabies epidemic would be the icing on the cake after Covid!

DancesWithTortoises · 25/08/2021 17:15

why should they be left behind to god knows what fate just because you dont think they are worthy ?

Because they don't matter as much as babies and children. That's a fact. I'd rather the pets died on the streets than the babies.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 25/08/2021 17:16

@bagelsandoranges

I apologise.

But seriously.... Can we please stop blaming an innocent guy for this. It was the doing of our own government that the plane was stalled, and it was for no reason at all other than the usual petty decisions. There was no impact to the current evacuation!

This.

Our government, and the farce which is Biden's government, is responsible for this appalling situation to begin with.

The animals are in addition, not instead of, people.

I really don't understand your reasoning. He hasn't prevented women and children getting out!! I think your statement should actually be directed at Joe Biden.

SueSaid · 25/08/2021 17:17

'he said in a statement earlier in the week that there are no airport personnel, the plane has 60 minutes in which to land, be loaded and leave'

I just do not believe that soldiers and airport personnel are not involved. They have to process all the admin and surely from a safety point check the animals for bombs.

'if your friend’s family could get on the spare seats on his plane would you be so against him then'

But this is not just one family! there are thousands at the gate while his 'Operation Ark' pets are apparently getting in. I support him and his staff getting out, not the200 cats and dogs.

'it will probably win him a Pride of Britain award.'

Yep. It's going to run and run. Meanwhile let's ignore the poor people waiting outside the gates who don't have pals on twitter and who aren't 'ex marines'.

toomuchlaundry · 25/08/2021 17:17

@DancesWithTortoises it’s an extra plane so is taking additional people. Like other posters have said other planes are being chartered, it is not just military planes taking people out

"Save your ire for the “World Leaders” that caused this shit show

Not a man who in my view is a principled and dynamic man who has shown more communication, marshalling and logistics skills in his little fingernail than any of this sorry rabble at the top of the political food chain "

Totally agree Cleverpolly3

@EverybodyIsInteresting

I don't think it matters what anyone says, you won't change your mind on this. I'm not sure why you posted in aibu.

He's done all the organising. He's paid for the flight. He clearly cares about the animals otherwise he wouldn't have an animal shelter in the first place.

He doesn't need the UK government to care about the animals. Let's face it, we all know that don't care much for most people. Look at the way they treated the Windrush Generation. He just needs permission for the flight and occupants to get here. It's not a lot to ask in the circumstances.

So why doesn't he ask Norway permission seeing as that is where his wife is, you'd think he would want to be with her

Exactly, he is a caring guy who has done everything he can for years to help animals and people and he deserves any help he needs to get out.

How many times does it need to be said. His plane is taking up valuable slots that could be used for planes carrying 600 humans. Or empty planes landing that can carry that many. It's been said many times. Have you not read the thread?
Saucery · 25/08/2021 17:22

Yep. It's going to run and run. Meanwhile let's ignore the poor people waiting outside the gates who don't have pals on twitter and who aren't 'ex marines'.

Or who can’t afford ££££££££ to pay what are essentially human traffickers. Or bribes to the corrupt. Or who climbed over women and children to get to the front. Or who asked for the documentation to leave months ago but were refused.

Not one bit of this is fair or right on those people left behind. None of it. Whether he takes a few rescue animals in an uninhabitable to humans part of a plane he has raised funds to get out of there is neither here nor there.

LadyLolaRuben · 25/08/2021 17:22

The guy has not spent a penny of tax payers money, chartered his own flight and the animals won't cost this country a penny. If everyone fought for their cause as hard as he has we wouldn't be in this mess.

HalzTangz · 25/08/2021 17:22

He hasn't secured jobs in the sense that they will have jobs in British companies, he's secured their jobs in that wherever he sets up a new rescue those staff will work their

Xoxoxoxoxoxox · 25/08/2021 17:23

@Xoxoxoxoxoxox if your friend’s family could get on the spare seats on his plane would you be so against him then

No because they are human beings.
If he fills the plane with humans then that is what I want.
No time waisted loading animals when time is so short on a vanity project.
Are you insane people will be killed.
People are in so much danger.
Think of the people in desperate danger with no way of getting the press on their side.
PRioritise human lives.

A vet chain has offered the trained staff jobs as we have a shortage of vets
Saucery · 25/08/2021 17:24

Or rather who didn’t climb over others to get to the front.

FloFloFloFloFlo · 25/08/2021 17:25

Honestly, I’m sick of the drama of some people. We aren’t talking about a load of dogs sitting in first class of a plane, whilst babies starve.

This is a privately funded plane which will take men, women and children who have visas (with room for others) with animals in the hold. Do some people not realise people can’t travel in aircraft holds?

Did anyone kick up a fuss about the bloody armoured car in a plane recently? Or is it just dogs getting saved that offends you?

I really am not seeing a problem here.
