The bloke with the animal shelter in Kabul.

Refusing to leave unless he can take ALL of his 60 odd staff and ALL of his 200+ cats and dogs with him. Hmm Expecting the government to make special rules for him and his friends.

Getting people out - understandable. The Taliban aren't going to look kindly on people who have translated for the military, or "collaborated" in other ways. But staff at an animal shelter?

And as for the refusing to leave without the animals and making this all out to be the UK government's fault? For not falling over themselves to arrange transport for a bunch of ownerless animals nobody wants when there are human beings in fear of their lives?

What is this guy playing at?

Speaking as an animal lover and owner, who has been involved in animal rescue for years - I don't think you're being unreasonable. Leaving the politics out of it, there comes a point when you just have to prioritise people over animals. Particularly when the alternative is that people stay to care for animals and might end up dead as a result.

The discussion about how to get more people out safely, past the Taliban preventing them getting into the airport - that's something else and really awful!

jasjas1973 · 25/08/2021 13:26

@TheAstronaut

Is that you Boris?

I think it’s Ben Wallace actually. Boris has actually done pretty good on this, just needs to tell his staff to know their place. Boris certainly put the not so honourable Ben Wallace in his place overnight.

You ve got very low standards on what is considered "doing pretty well"

Bojo appointed Wallace and has left the Afghan withdrawal until the last possible moment.

ancientgran · 25/08/2021 13:26

@AnnieSnap He is taking people out too. The hold-up in getting out isn’t getting a plane in the air, it’s processing people. He has arranged the paperwork. It doesn’t have to be people or animals.There are people with the correct paperwork who aren't getting through.

Are you saying there are limitless landing/take off slots at Kabul airport? I don't think so and yes he's taking his people out, people who are at lower risk than the translators this country has a duty to get out.

Goofers · 25/08/2021 13:27

@TheAstronaut

I still think they should get the people who are at risk out.

And they are. The animals will take up no space that humans could. The time spent loading them on will be less than the planes are sitting on runway for anyway. And the plane can take other humans as well as Nowzad staff. So all good.

Except for the fact that the 300 seater plane is taking up a slot that a 600 seater plane could use, and slots are finite...
Saucery · 25/08/2021 13:27

He is taking up a landing slot and a take off slot to get his animals out while people die.

The. Plane. Will. Be. On. The. Tarmac. For. The. Same. Amount. Of. Time.

ToykotoLosAngeles · 25/08/2021 13:28

I don't know if most people realise that most of the staff including the vets are women and one of them is 34 weeks pregnant. For those banging on about women and children. But yeah, let's leave them to it. I hear the Taliban bloody loves a professionally trained working woman who has collaborated with the West.

TheAstronaut · 25/08/2021 13:28

Bojo appointed Wallace and has left the Afghan withdrawal until the last possible moment.

Done well on the Nowzad issue I mean. Nothing else. The man is a complete twat, just that he has pushed this through and told Wallace to get back in his box.

@failedbyGP

Sadly a lot of the people at the airport don't have the correct papers to satisfy the UK and US authorities. They are not waiting because there is not room, they are waiting because they don't meet the criteria set by UK and US authorities. As we have seen, there is space on flights, but the UK and US authorities don't want to fill it with people whose identity and status they are not 100% sure of
The taleban are not letting loads of people with full paperwork through. They control access to the airport.

Meanwhile people who have got there are desperate. A woman handed her baby over razor wire to a stranger (soldier) to get it on a plane. He wasn't supposed to take it obv but did in the end.

She doesn't know where the baby will end up and good chance she'll never see again.

But this guy reckons the only issue is paperwork with getting a large number of people to the airport? Let alone animals. What's his plan for getting them through? Individuals with full paperwork are being stopped. And the scenes there are mayhem. People have died clinging onto the outside of planes. That's how difficult and how desperate the situation is.

Someone says people can't go in the hold animals can. If it won't kill the animals then it won't kill people. The hold could therefore be filled with children.

I mean if this flight was allowed to land, he could get all his people and animals through the taleban, through the crowds. Onto a plane.

And then load animals on merrily while the crowds outside are so desperate they're handing over babies and young children if they can get high enough up the barrier, if a soldier will take them.

Surely a cat or dog released has a better chance than those who are seen as collaborators, or children esp girls who will be under the taleban regime.

@MakemeaCake

She didn't know it was going to be empty

There is so much naivity here.

When I saw that photo of the 'empty' plane I assumed it was staged.
It could have been a photo taken by her before anyone else boarded.
Or another plane.
Anything.

Some people here are so gullible and manipulated by the media.

You sound like someone who calls people 'sheeple'.
failedbyGP · 25/08/2021 13:29

We withdrew years ago

What are you on about? No we didn't! We stopped our combat role some time ago but we certainly didn't withdraw years ago

Correct, combat troops withdrew, but peacekeeping troops remained until Boris agreed to withdraw them.

He seems to doing what he can for the cause that he's chosen.

If you don't agree with what he's doing then maybe you can try and do the same for a cause you find worthy?

TheAstronaut · 25/08/2021 13:30

??

Doodlebug71 · 25/08/2021 13:31

@ancientgran: If he can plan how to get his people and animals into the airport without support it is a shame he hasn't been operating a programme to help the people who are at most risk. We could rename him The Scarlet Pimpernel.

Just think how he could have helped some of those desperate women trying to hand their babies to strangers.

He's running an animal sanctuary, and trying to keep the Taliban away from his staff. The fact that he has a plan doesn't mean he can put that plan into action every day. I'm guessing it will take hours, and considerable effort to get to the airport, which is why he was aiming to get there well before his plane. He's already going to take as many people as are allowed to leave.

Namelessnancy · 25/08/2021 13:31

Women who have been working for a western charity and trained as veterinary surgeons are going to be at increased risk under the Taliban. As has been said ad infinitum the animals will be in the hold and not taking any places from people.

The veterinary industry has been badly affected by covid and Brexit and the vet community is ready to welcome these people with open arms. As mentioned above one of the corporates has promised jobs for the Afghan vets and the RCVS are supporting also.

ancientgran · 25/08/2021 13:31

@Saucery

The. Plane. Will. Be. On. The. Tarmac. For. The. Same. Amount. Of. Time.

That is irrelevant if there are limited take off/landing slots. Maybe you just can't grasp that if you have a limited number of slots and he takes one then that is a slot that can't be used for the people who should be a priority.

It. Isn't. About. The. Time. On. The. Ground. It. Is. About. Landing/take off. Slots.

Shall we all play the same silly games?

You need to get your facts right. He’s financed the plane, is offering over 100 places to people in addition to his staff, and the animals would go in an otherwise empty cargo hold.

This. That last sentence especially.

Sorry, wasn't aware that it was compulsory to be an animal lover. Again. My bad

But it’s literally any excuse to tell everyone you hate dogs.

So pleased to see all the support for Pen and Nowzad on here. It’s a brilliant charity.

So let's think about it. You are a taliban fighter who may have been interrogated by British soliders with an Afghan translator involved. You have a list of targets, who will you have as a priority translators or vets?

Even apart from that our govt/military have a moral duty to help the people who helped them. Just think of the next conflict when we can't get translators because they know we will desert them if we are on the losing side.

Practically and morally the people who assisted our military should be a priority.

overthe · 25/08/2021 13:34

He's trying to get his staff out, which is amazing thing to do as many of them are women and are high risk having worked for a western organisation. I hope he succeeds. There is extra space on the plane for other people. The evacuation should have been completed months ago and not left until the last minute.

SueSaid · 25/08/2021 13:35

'Except for the fact that the 300 seater plane is taking up a slot that a 600 seater plane could use, and slots are finite...'

Exactly. I think some people think this is a Disney film and big brave Pen is the saviour.

They are using scarce resources at ground level. This rescue plane does not load itself, the animals do not process themselves. They aren't a priority, it is a sad tragic and shambolic situation but ex marine Pen needs to get his arse out with his staff and leave the dogs and cats behind. The poor desperate people queueing seeing these animals being transported in omg.
