Covid Isolation Hotel Nightmare

446 replies

Suppermumzy · 24/08/2021 16:18

Stuck in this London Isolation Hotel...food is terrible...if you are lucky to go out for exercise you are hurriedly sent back in as there is always a list waiting to go out and use the outdoor space which can safely have 4 people in at a time..i will add photos of food. Cost for 11 days £2285.

I asked today "Would they stop me if I wanted to leave?" Answer No..but you will be reported as an absconder and may face a £10,000 fine....Surely this is not voluntary nor is it fair...who is monitoring this system..we seam to be a forgotten minority rotting away behind fences..

I am coming back from Africa to bury my 99 year old father who died 1/08....and I couldn't have not gone...I had to see him through....Surely this is not voluntary imprisonment as without the hotel booking reference you are not allowed on your flight at the departure airport...

AIBU to feel aggrieved by the system..when i left England the hotel fee was £1750...when I went to book it had gone up £500....NHS nurse looked after British public throughout the Pandemic but I feel that I am incapacitated to look after my own..including my young kids...

I think there are a lot of things our country should be ashamed of.

Feeding adequate food for a quarantine period for people who “HAVE” to come to this country is not one of those things to be ashamed of,

And I’m ashamed that people think this is a thing to actually feel ashamed of, someone who can afford a flight and a hotel and whatever else so probably 5k to come to the U.K.
Jesus Christ

Lightisnotwhite · 24/08/2021 22:53

@Excelthetube

I genuinely cannot believe how racist this thread is.
Well the Red countries are pretty much all non white countries so it’s inevitable surely?
isthisareverse · 24/08/2021 22:58

@Lightisnotwhite

isthisareverse Over-charging and someone filling their pockets that's not acceptable

It is. It’s like centre park charging double or triple the price in school holidays. Who is to say what’s fair or not.
GOV.U.K. Says : You should not travel to red list counties.
End of.

So if you chose to travel ( which is an option still available to you) why would you expect value for money for isolation on return? I think you should expect decent food ( fresh) and sone exercise but value for money? No it’s not an exercise in making people happy when they were asked not to go, just isolating them.

It's not the same at all. Centre park is offering a LOWER price during the off peak season for a start, but even putting the price up during the peak season would be god business sense.

THIS is not a leisure activity, you don't know why people are travelling (in this case you do actually...) and the "red country" list is changing every 2 days!

It's outrageous that someone wold fill their pockets out of this. And we shouldn't be quiet about it and tolerate it.

Don't blame people and pretend they were asked not to go when the government has simply changed the rules.

olidora63 · 24/08/2021 22:58

@Number Theory you definitely have low priorities for your own family then …am so glad my children are mine!

isthisareverse · 24/08/2021 23:02

There's the jealousy and bitterness against people who have dared going abroad - even when the OP's "holiday" was the funeral of their father, imagine if if actually had been a holiday!

It's usually the same covid police outraged about people exercising or not being martyrs during the lockdown.

Xenia · 24/08/2021 23:02

I suppose for some of us 10 or 14 days with very little food might be tremendously good for our health and I count myself in that category! However I am against this imprisonment and would rather the risks of spreading covid to the rest of us were higher than confine people like this.

May be they want to deter everyone from going to any red country so they make these conditions awful to stop people attending funerals in person and just attending online instead I suppose -what awful choices we are making people make.

(I have not had a night away from my house since summer 2019 and both 2020 and 2021 summer holidays were cancelled by the holiday company so not experienced in all this stuff)

Someone asked about health emergencies - one lady kept having to go back and forth to hospital (pregnant) and I am sure plenty are making up illnesses just to get out for a bit too whereas others will genuinely be ill.

memberofthewedding · 24/08/2021 23:03

I suspect that in due course there are going to be teams of lawyers bring action against the owners of these hotels for providing such shoddy service in payment for so much money.

shewalkslikerihanna · 24/08/2021 23:06

@Eurghhhhhhh
It’s a shame on us all
Absolutely sickens me the way healthy people are being treated

I really hope so

LittleRatBag · 24/08/2021 23:14

@Kateygirl2 What a vile comment! You’re disgusting.

shewalkslikerihanna · 24/08/2021 23:24

Well said

Did anyone see the video that was doing the rounds of a couple who lived abroad and their son died here and they came home to see his body

I’m sure there is a special dispensation in these cases but they got no help from any quarter and in their grief just walked out of the hotel

The video showed them doing that and there was no real attempt to stop them
Those poor parents

I’d love to know what happened after that.

Excelthetube · 24/08/2021 23:35

This thread is fucking bonkers
I’m no covid police. But I don’t get to see my family member die or have a funeral
Get a fucking grip selfishness at the extreme

FlubberNutter · 24/08/2021 23:41

@Excelthetube I’m sorry you experienced that but we have come a long way since then. People don’t even have to wear masks anymore! Thousands of people are gathering at sporting events and there are no more social restrictions. It seems really ridiculous that people are still being forced to quarantine in hotels at their own expense when life is almost back to normal. For that amount of money the food should at least be edible, OP has every right to be upset.

Excelthetube · 24/08/2021 23:44

@FlubberNutter
It’s irrelevant. They have reasons wether we like them or not.
So if I was SO desperate to come to this country I would suck it the fuck up and order a deliveroo
No one spends their life savings on coming over for a funeral. Millions of people every year can’t be at their loved ones funeral.

If I could afford 5k I would think another £300 on takeaways would be fine.

Excelthetube · 24/08/2021 23:45

@FlubberNutter and I don’t know where you go. But in the fucking hospital and care home I visit weekly. I still have to wear a mask,

Talk about people who have NO idea of the real covid world

FlubberNutter · 24/08/2021 23:53

@Excelthetube there really is no need to be such a dick. I know you still have to wear a mask in NHS settings (and public transport).

I would spend every penny I had to attend my father’s funeral and most people I know would do the same.

Also, what’s with the comment about being ‘SO desperate to come to this country’? The racism on this thread is vile.

Excelthetube · 25/08/2021 00:00

@FlubberNutter
I’m not the racist one. If I was SO desperate to come to this country I would suck it up, potentially being British in another country.

Where did I say that had anything to do with race. Odd very odd that you get racism out of that statement! I didn’t say oi foreigners of colour - because that’s clearly not what I said.

Anyways. Masks are still a thing. Red lists are still a thing. If you think we are through this pandemic then you’re in LALA LAND

Excelthetube · 25/08/2021 00:03

@FlubberNutter is your father dead? If not then get a grip. No one knows how they’ll deal with it. Most people cannot afford to. And it’s patronising to say you would use your last pennies. Life my dear is not that simple.

And if it were your last pennies. Would you really have the energy to whinge about your “Indian food” on mumsnet when ensconced with grief

Suppermumzy · 25/08/2021 00:04

@Excelthetube, @FlubberNutter...So yes I was desperate to get back home to the UK as UK is where my home is.....where I left 2 young children haven't seen them for a month....I also have a job I have to get back to and a life ..But I also had to go back to bury my Dad and make arrangements for the wellbeing of my very elderly mother who I have not seen since 2016..So as you can see it's hardly a pleasure flying first class...for 24 hours there and 24 hours back..sleeping rough while waiting for connecting flights in airports...

@Suppermumzy I would’ve done exactly the same thing and I’m so sorry you’ve had to read such awful comments after everything you have experienced.

FlubberNutter · 25/08/2021 00:11

@Excelthetube ODFOD. How dare you assume to know what grief and loss I have experienced in my life.

Excelthetube · 25/08/2021 00:12

@FlubberNutter
I would have done exactly the same too. Though I couldn’t have afforded 1st class.

But I wouldn’t have whinged about some bad Indian food I got forced to eat. When I would be allowed to get deliveroo every day.

I certainly would have more on my mind. But I guess we all deal with grief over loss of loved ones differently. I personally don’t know how anyone would have the energy to bother posting about my meal on mumsnet. I spent a lot of time on the grief/death board. Actually talking about my dead parent.

But I guess we are all different

ArcheryAnnie · 25/08/2021 00:16
@MiddleClassProblem - I am sure it is a popular dish in some cultures, but they really should not be providing such food to British people stuck in a rubbish hotel for 2 weeks. Surely they could tailor to British tastes? I wouldn't eat that.
What the fuck?

"British people" with "British tastes". What the fuck are they, then? Should they be serving Chinese food, which is apparently the most popular takeaway ordered in the UK, as against Indian food, which is second preference for Brits to order?

Honestly, the comments here = "disgusting", "muck", "slop", and so on. It's pictures of rice and what appears to be curry, and of milk desserts. Get over yourselves.

NumberTheory · 25/08/2021 00:30
@Number Theory you definitely have low priorities for your own family then …am so glad my children are mine!
I don't have low priorities for my family. I do what I can to keep them safe. In the OP's position I would likely have gone too.

You didn't ask about priorities. You asked why some people don't find it inhumane. And I don't think there is anything inhumane about putting people up in a comfortable room with an ensuite and three meals of edible if unappetizing looking food for all of 11 days.

Nor is there anything inhumane with a country requiring people to isolate at their own expense if they do choose to prioritise their own family over risk to the rest of the UK. Which the OP did and which I probably would too.
