To ask for West End Show Recommendations

Geminijust · 22/08/2021 12:21

4 of us usually have a trip to a West End Show a couple of times a year. We're trying to arrange the next long overdue outing and am looking for some recommendations. One of the girls has suggested Mary Poppins but I'm not sure that's my cup of tea as not generally a Disney fan (am prepared to be convinced otherwise!) but obviously need to find something everyone is happy with so am looking for some alternative suggestions to go back with.

Shows I've seen and loved:
Six
Tina The Musical
Woman in Black
Curious Incident of the dog in the night time
Mamma Mia
School of Rock
War Horse
Everybody's Talking About Jamie (would see again tomorrow)
Billy Elliot (ditto above, although no longer on sadly)

Shows I've enjoyed but not loved:
Lion King
Charlie & Chocolate Factory
Wicked
Matilda
Comedy about a bank robbery

Not really hated anything but remember being quite bored by Phantom of the Opera when I was much younger (found it depressing)

Quite fancy Les Mis but know one of the girls has seen it and it's not for everyone. Heard good things about Book of Mormon & Come from Away but really don't know too much about them.

Would be grateful for suggestions of shows you've seen and enjoyed!

Thank you Smile

Book of Mormon is hilarious but if any of the group don’t appreciate rude humour, you might want to give it a miss! But it’s really very funny, I’ve seen it multiple times

countbackfromten · 22/08/2021 12:41

Come From Away. Brilliant, heart warming, funny. It is a favourite of mine and can’t wait to see it again.

Another vote for come from away.

Going to see come from away on Wed, there is back to the future which is getting good reviews, Cinderella the new Andrew Lloyd Webber one,Hamilton is a favourite of mine dear Evan Hanson,

Gizlotsmum · 22/08/2021 12:44

Actually not sure if Evan Hansen restarted?

MothershipG · 22/08/2021 12:46

👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻 to Hamilton & Dear Evan Hanson

Saw Heathers last week, some great songs but the acting felt a little hammy in places, finishing its run soon.

NeverTalkToStrangers · 22/08/2021 12:47

Anything Goes is great - old-fashioned musical comedy with a ridiculous plot.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 22/08/2021 12:47

Book of Mormon is hilarious, have seen it three times. Also, Hamilton.

bridgetreilly · 22/08/2021 12:47

Not technically West End but if you can get to Anything Goes at the Barbican, DO IT!

Hbh17 · 22/08/2021 12:52

Hamilton
Come From Away
Amelie

MadeOfStarStuff · 22/08/2021 12:58

Come From Away is absolutely brilliant, highly recommend it

Chiffandbip · 22/08/2021 13:00

Mary Poppins is the best show I’ve ever been to in the WE. We went last week and it was magnificent.

xyzandabc · 22/08/2021 13:03

Saw Come from Away last week and it's my new favourite. Really really want to go see it again. Emotional, heartwarming, funny and uplifting. Take a look at the documentary on YouTube: Gander, The Ripple Effect. It's about how the show came to be written and interviews with the real people that it's based on.

xyzandabc · 22/08/2021 13:04

Also Hamilton, I've only seen it on Disney Plus but would love to see it in real life

Cookerhood · 22/08/2021 13:07

Didn't get Hamilton at all. Loved Book of Mormon & Jamie.
I've just seen an advert for Jerusalem starting next year. I can't wait to see it.
Has anyone seen the Life of Pi? Not sure if it's even started yet - we had tickets for last summer & they have been moved to later in the year.

Wetellyourstory · 22/08/2021 13:10

Another vote for Book of Mormon (subject to not being easily offended, seen twice and would see it again). Also Dear Evan Hansen and Hamilton (the showing on Disney+ didn’t do it justice), both of which I would see again.

lap90 · 22/08/2021 13:12

Come From Away is v. good - i also didn't know much about it either but loved it.

Mary Poppins is good.

Not sure when you're going to the theatre but Hairspray was brilliant... but that's closing next month.

I've also really enjoyed the Prince of Egypt.

Apparently 'Anything Goes' is supposed to be fantastic.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 22/08/2021 13:16

I've seen quite a few on your list.

I've booked Moulin Rouge for early 2022.
Really enjoyed Waitress but I think this might have closed.
Ones I want to see are Hamilton (my DD has seen this and this topped Billy Elliott which was our favourite).
I've heard good things about Come Away with me and also Dear Evan Hanson so these are on my list to see.
I really enjoyed Les Mis my teenager thought it was good but didn't love it.

ineedaholidaynow · 22/08/2021 13:21

Mary Poppins is amazing. Saw it a few years ago when it was touring. Took MIL, who afterwards told us she wasn't a fan of musicals, but she really enjoyed it.

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 22/08/2021 13:22

I meant Come From Away

Geminijust · 22/08/2021 14:06

Thank you for your replies. Maybe I will give Mary Poppins a go if the others are keen, just wasn't mad on the film personally and like more modern stuff mostly. Really like the sound of Come From Away though. The suggestion of rudeness in Book of Mormon concerns me slightly - not for me, but possibly at least one of my friends won't appreciate it (or maybe they will, not sure!)

We loved Dear Evan Hansen - have teen girls

MsTSwift · 22/08/2021 14:09

Also Waitress though was slightly rude!

MsTSwift · 22/08/2021 14:11

We were at the last showing of Dear Evan Hansen the Saturday before lock down 1 announced. Made it more special somehow so glad we saw it

ineedaholidaynow · 22/08/2021 14:12

@Geminijust there are some clips of Mary Poppins on Youtube to give you an idea. Some of the choreography is amazing.
