To ask for West End Show Recommendations

Geminijust · 22/08/2021 12:21

4 of us usually have a trip to a West End Show a couple of times a year. We're trying to arrange the next long overdue outing and am looking for some recommendations. One of the girls has suggested Mary Poppins but I'm not sure that's my cup of tea as not generally a Disney fan (am prepared to be convinced otherwise!) but obviously need to find something everyone is happy with so am looking for some alternative suggestions to go back with.

Shows I've seen and loved:
Six
Tina The Musical
Woman in Black
Curious Incident of the dog in the night time
Mamma Mia
School of Rock
War Horse
Everybody's Talking About Jamie (would see again tomorrow)
Billy Elliot (ditto above, although no longer on sadly)

Shows I've enjoyed but not loved:
Lion King
Charlie & Chocolate Factory
Wicked
Matilda
Comedy about a bank robbery

Not really hated anything but remember being quite bored by Phantom of the Opera when I was much younger (found it depressing)

Quite fancy Les Mis but know one of the girls has seen it and it's not for everyone. Heard good things about Book of Mormon & Come from Away but really don't know too much about them.

Would be grateful for suggestions of shows you've seen and enjoyed!

Thank you Smile

I am no prude and live a bit of ‘rude’ humour, but I hated Book of Mormon.
It’s not rude, it’s offensive. The kind of ‘humour’ that is only ‘funny’ because it breaks taboo. I found it insulting and low-brow, but no doubt appealing to people think anything ‘un-PC’ is ‘brilliant’ and ‘classic’.

Mary Poppins is a lovely show - I doubt you’d regret it. If you fancy something a bit funkier then &Juliet is sooooo much fun and feel-good.

DarceyDashwood · 22/08/2021 18:14

Just to add Come From Away is a gorgeous show - it’s 90mins straight through and is what I’d describe as ‘minimalistic’ in terms of the set / costumes etc. This isn’t a criticism by the way - I adored it!

Mnusernc · 22/08/2021 18:16

Cinderella is fab

Merryoldgoat · 22/08/2021 18:17

@DarceyDashwood I always recommend Come From Away and I saw it unintentionally. Now I want to go again 🤣

I listen to the soundtrack at work to get me through bad days - it’s got an amazing range of performances and hits all the emotions doesn’t it?

MissyB1 · 22/08/2021 18:18

We are booking for Cinderella.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 22/08/2021 18:19

So many shows to choose! My faves that are currently playing are -

Come From Away - twice now and would see it again in a heartbeat
Hamilton - third time next month
Any of the Mischief Theatre Productions - especially Groan Ups

Also minimalistic in terms of performers. The small cast are amazing, such energy and emotion. Grin

Come from away, waitress if it's still on, dear Evan hansen, but I'm not London based so not as up to date, haven't been post pandemic

ChloeDecker · 22/08/2021 18:20

Saw Pretty Woman at the Savoy this week. That was good fun! Didn’t realise the score was by Bryan Adams when I booked but it definitely has his vibe.

ShowOfHands · 22/08/2021 18:21

I can't wait to see Come From Away. Mil has just been and can't praise it highly enough.

We're off to see Hamilton in a couple of weeks. It's ds's tenth birthday and he has no idea. I can't wait!

Wallopbang · 22/08/2021 18:26

I saw Pretty Woman the musical last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. Would highly recommend.

Mull · 22/08/2021 18:34

9 to 5 was much better than I expected! I had quite low expectations but had a really good time!

Trunchbull1969 · 22/08/2021 18:51

Agree with the Come From Away suggestion.
Mormon’s not back till 15th November.
Cinderella is brilliant- I saw it on Thursday (would actually recommend the cheap seats as I got a better view from the cheapest than some of the most expensive for some of it)
Blood Brothers is almost constantly touring (usually. And has just resumed. Nowhere near London currently so depends where you live)
Play that Goes Wrong (I know Bank Robbery is by the same people, which you didn’t love, but it’s quite different. There’s a clip from the Royal Variety Show on YouTube which gives a fair idea what it’s like)
Magic Goes Wrong is also returning in October (yet again completely diff to either of the above)

DarceyDashwood · 22/08/2021 18:51

@Merryoldgoat it’s just lovely. I’ve watched the opening number at the Olivier Awards so many times! It was the last show I saw just before lockdown last year. I loved it

Myusernameisnotmyusernameno · 22/08/2021 18:58

We saw and loved Rock of Ages and Jersey Boys

LibbyL92 · 22/08/2021 19:13

Pretty woman or Back to the future?

adawong · 22/08/2021 19:24

Come From Away.
Mary Poppins.
Pretty Woman.
Saw Hamilton and thought it would never end, dull as fuck.

Xlalalaladdd · 22/08/2021 19:26

@countbackfromten

Come From Away. Brilliant, heart warming, funny. It is a favourite of mine and can’t wait to see it again.
Come from away was amazing! Totally recommend!
Witchcraftandhokum · 22/08/2021 19:34

It's not a musical, but I saw Constellations on the his week at the Vaudeville. It's one of the best pieces of theatre I've seen.

ineedaholidaynow · 22/08/2021 19:39

I had not heard about Come From Away before. Now reading up about it and putting it on my list to see whenever we can.

mycatscausehell · 22/08/2021 19:46

i loved heathers, obviously it has the same themes as the film though if that could be an issue

TooWicked · 22/08/2021 19:53

Not musicals but - we loved the Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night, and if there’s any Shitfaced Shakespeare shows on on we have enjoyed those too.

Southwest12 · 22/08/2021 19:53

Hamilton, Come From Away or Dear Evan Hansen. I've only seen Hamilton (twice!) but know the soundtrack to the other two inside out and want to see them. Just need to be able to afford to go down to London for a few nights and see them!

Figgygal · 22/08/2021 20:06

I’d love to see anything goes
