AIBU to be really disappointed that the only tickets I was successful for in the West Midlands ballot was a couple for the closing ceremony. No swimming, althletics, cricket, gymnastics - nothing at all

YNBU !
I was hoping to go and see these games. I guess not now. I'll settle for Paris 2024 but looks like I best start planning now.
Sorry you're disappointed. Is there any Stand by queue or anything?

Reallyreallyborednow · 20/08/2021 12:03

It was the same for London 2012. I applied for loads of tickets and got nothing. Did end up paying over the odds for one event that came up in a second ballot, but it was all pretty disappointing.

I thought some tickets should be reserved for locals. Should be for commonwealths too.

poolblue · 20/08/2021 12:06

If you live in the West Midlands you could apply in the early ballot, which I did - thought I'd get at least one sport allocated. Feels a bit odd going to the closing ceremony on its own and only added it as a last minute event.

I think there is a official shopping/selling page after the main selling period goes live.

I applied in the WM ballot, got nothing though. Bit disappointed.

ColdAsIceCubes · 20/08/2021 12:09

I’ve just got the email to say I was unsuccessful too. My bank account is thanking me though Wink.

PeaAndHamSoupFromAChicken · 20/08/2021 12:10

I had similar when it was in Glasgow. I didn't get a single one but I saw others getting multiple events. Sad

Hellocatshome · 20/08/2021 12:12

I have been waiting for the main ballot to open but sounds like I need to be more pessimistic in my expectations. If you get something in the ballot you don't want can you decline it or are you obligated to take it?

JuneOsborne · 20/08/2021 12:15

Yeah, I got nothing either. Wanted netball, diving and a couple of others.

Proper bullshit.

My theory is that because I didn't tick the box that said I was happy for them to 'upgrade' them if I didn't get the cheap seats...

FreezerBird · 20/08/2021 12:17

The main ballot opens in September and you can have another go in that I think.

CMOTDibbler · 20/08/2021 12:18

I got the T20 final and para powerlifting - had also applied for diving and Rugby Sevens. DH will try for sevens tickets in the main ballot though

Ah well done on the T20 final - am very envious Smile

CMOTDibbler · 20/08/2021 12:22

The t20 is probably my least exciting, but DH is delighted as he is a big cricket fan. I have put my name down for volunteering, so will see what happens with that as well

Retrievemysanity · 20/08/2021 12:26

We tried to apply on the final day but hadn’t realised it closed at 4pm or whenever it was! Don’t feel quite as bad now!

babyboyHarrison · 20/08/2021 12:35

We applied for 5 different events. Mostly I just selected the cheapest tickets, except for the athletics where I went up a band. We got tickets for the athletics but nothing else. I expect there are just so many applications the odds are really small. I doubt it's a coincidence that we got the more expensive tickets. Hopefully you'll get something in the main ballot. We got several tickets to the London olympics through the ballot so fingers crossed for you.

Mine too!
JacquelineCarlyle · 20/08/2021 12:38

We applied for loads and got about a 1/4 of what we applied for, including athletics so happy with that but disappointed we didn't get any cycling, swimming or diving.

We didn't tick the box to upgrade on any either as couldn't have afforded the tickets if we'd been successful so don't think upgrading was necessary to be successful.

We will apply again when the main ballot opens in September to try to get some of the others we wanted.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 20/08/2021 12:42

Although I am sorry people didn't get what they wanted...I'm very grateful for this thread as we hope to take DDs next year and I had no idea we would have to apply for tickets as early as September!

We went to the Paralympics in 2012 and had a great time.

JacquelineCarlyle · 20/08/2021 12:45

They seem to have kept it quite low key @Aroundtheworldin80moves - I follow most things for the area on social media and didn't even know about the early ballot for those living in the area until a friend told me and had to Google when the main ballot opens.

poolblue · 20/08/2021 12:46

Will definitely apply again in the main ballot. I'd really like to volunteer but live too far away for a daily commute.

CazM2012 · 20/08/2021 12:47

Just had my email too, no tickets at all Sad quite disappointed tbh as can’t see me getting any when the main ballot opens. Picked some of the more popular ones but also some I thought we would definitely get.

HelloDoris · 20/08/2021 12:59

I was going to apply but just couldn't afford the ticket prices. I have my interview to volunteer in September, hoping I get to take part 🥰

ILoveAnOwl · 20/08/2021 13:04

We got artistic gymnastics which I'm excited about, but we applied for a lot of stuff and that's it.

Hoping for some more through the main ballot!

SpottyStripyDuvet · 20/08/2021 13:10

I applied for athletics and cricket. Got the cricket and feel quite grateful now based on this thread.

TheGenealogist · 20/08/2021 13:17

Hang on, you might still get something!

I didn't apply for tickets at Glasgow 2014 as I was volunteering at the games and when the tickets were released we were told not to apply as there was no way of knowing whether you'd be working that day.

A few months before the Games loads more tickets were released and we managed without too much trouble to get excellent tickets for the Rugby 7s finals on a day I wasn't working.

Give it to about April/May and it will become clearer how many tickets the countries around the world will be using, or not. Then they will release more.

I just loved my time as a Clydesider, I was in the press team and was helping journalists from around the world get interviews with athletes after they'd competed. Got to go to the dress rehearsal of the opening ceremony, and got a free ticket in the press seats for the closing ceremony too. Great experience. Would really recommend volunteering to anyone considering it.

mads2750 · 20/08/2021 13:21

I applied for a lot, and got swimming and judo. Suspect they have severely limited the numbers for locals and there will be a lot more available in the open ballot, but obviously a lot more people applying.
