To ask if your engagement and wedding rings are the same metals/colour?

Would you mix metals? I have a platinum engagement ring but I do also love gold. Not sure whether to stick to a similar colour and get a white gold/platinum wedding band or go for the yellow gold. Has anyone got photos of this working together? Or alternatively, do you wear them on separate hands if yours don’t match?

My engagement and eternity rings are yellow gold and my wedding ring is rose gold (it was my mother's) but the difference is barely noticeable to be honest.

I'm not sure I'd mix silver and gold colours though unless you make it a thing and mix all your jewellery? Smile

thebirthlyhallows · 14/08/2021 09:18

Gold is softer than platinum so will eventually be damaged or worn away by your engagement ring. I think it's recommended you get the same metal if they will sit next to each other

Coogee · 14/08/2021 09:19

Mine are both platinum.

Apparently, platinum is much harder than gold so mixing metals can lead to accelerated wear on the gold one.

Lockheart · 14/08/2021 09:20

Do what you like, you're the one who will be wearing them.

BrilloPaddy · 14/08/2021 09:21

I've got 22 carat gold in my wedding ring and 18 carat in my eternity band. Both yellow gold. They've worn to a really gorgeous colour over the last 30 years.

I think rose gold and yellow gold mix well but not platinum/gold.

Same here! Our jeweller when we picked wedding rings warned me of this.

I have a rose gold wedding ring and a natural white gold (unplated) engagement ring with some rose gold detailing. I think it looks lovely!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 14/08/2021 09:36

Mine are both platinum but I mix my jewellery so it wouldn't bother me if one was gold and the other platinum

notanothertakeaway · 14/08/2021 09:36

Platinum for both

Janeyem · 14/08/2021 09:36

My wedding ring is silver because we made them ourselves, my engagement ring is platinum and my eternity ring is white gold! So all the same colour but different metals and the wedding ring in the middle is faring ok!
I say wear what makes you happy and I quite like the look of mixed metals!!

hedgehogger1 · 14/08/2021 09:37

As others have said the hardness of the metals is different so the platinum would damage the gold

WhoEatsPopTarts · 14/08/2021 10:02

I’ve mixed mine, platinum wedding band with gold engagement ring. After 22 years still going strong, the difference in hardness was mentioned by the jeweller but if the gold has worn it’s not noticeable.

I often mix metals in necklaces etc but what been great is that over the years my taste has changed, by having both metals it still works.

EatSprayGlove · 14/08/2021 10:05

I have a gold engagement and platinum wedding ring. The only issue is the gold wears more so I feel looks less fresh but as it's a thicker band and they are made to sit together it's not a real issue. It should be whatever you prefer though look wise as it's very personal.

Alarae · 14/08/2021 10:17

My engagement ring is palladium, my wedding ring is gold with the stones set in platinum. Did also wear a thin rose gold stacking band as well at one point (had my daughters name on).

I am very much a person that doesn't think too much about it though. I liked all the rings so I wore them!

traintraveller · 14/08/2021 11:10

My engagement ring has a white gold band with the stones set in yellow gold and my wedding ring is yellow gold. I love the contrast and wear them together.

Ughmaybenot · 14/08/2021 11:17

Both platinum here, I personally really dislike yellow gold and mixed metals.
I’d say it’s personal preference but there is the element of one metal potentially being harder than the other metal, you would need to consider the damage element.

Allthesefolks · 14/08/2021 11:18

I’d be fine with mixing the colours, both my engagement and wedding rings are yellow gold bands with decorative platinum settings (antique engagement ring so it’s unusual and had wedding band made to match).

But as pp have said be careful of the wear.

WisestIsShe · 14/08/2021 11:19

My wedding band is a three colour Russian style. I think the colours are pretty together.

Breathmiller · 14/08/2021 11:26

I have a white gold wedding ring with a diamond set in it flat. (No engagement ring)

When my gran died a few years ago I got her mum's ring that she had worn, as a keepsake. I think it's an eternity. It is fairly thin but yellow gold with tiny diamonds all the way round.

It's a little too big for me so I put it under my wedding ring so it wouldn't fall off.

So I have white gold next to yellow gold and I actually love it. The yellow gold seems to be quite faded though. It's not a very bright yellow.

And I say that as someone who has never worn yellow gold. Always silver or white gold.

I'm not the most particular person about jewellery though so I may not be the best person to ask. The diamonds in the eternity ring are not all there and so small they are barely noticeable. So it's not fancy bu any means, but I love the sentiment behind both rings.

But, as for the two colours I don't feel they clash or are garish together.

kwiksavenofrillsusername · 14/08/2021 11:33

I quite like the look of mixing different metals. If the queen does it, then it must be ok!

upaladderagain · 14/08/2021 11:34

Mine are both made up of yellow and white gold, for two reasons. Firstly so that I can wear other jewellery that is either yellow or white, and secondly, because I am far too indecisive and couldn't choose.

BashfulClam · 14/08/2021 12:14

I gave a platinum engagement ring and a palladium wedding ring. The palladium was much cheaper and they are a similar hardness, the colour variation isn’t noticeable. With white gold the platinum will wear off the rhodium coating much faster so it will need dipped more often. I wanted to get my grans wedding ring rhodium dipped to use but due to the platinum engagement ring it was not possible.

Sanch1 · 14/08/2021 12:18

I have a mixture. My engagement ring is antique yellow gold with white gold stone setting and my wedding ring is platinum. Looks great but I feel like the white gold setting ties it together. Would be a bit outing if I posted a picture as it's very unique, can PM if you'd like to see.

Plump82 · 14/08/2021 12:22

My engagement ring is silver with the stone set in rose gold and my wedding ring is silver.

Oblomov21 · 14/08/2021 12:29

I'm not keen on mixing. Most of my friends who I like have the same. This is my preferred.
